Commodium Antennas

Question

Posted

Has anyone used one of these antennas?  I stumbled across this guy on YouTube.  I like his content.  He sells these antennas, and I think I wanna buy one.  The video of his tests are quite impressive to me.  What do you all think?

Just looks like a common J-Pole type of antenna with a thick copper pipe for the radiating element. Only thing that is a bit different are the coils along the length of the copper pipe, which I assume are "phasing" coils to stack sections for more gain.

Justt another homemade antenna. I still prefer commercial antenna's.

That's cool. But I wanted to know if anyone here has heard of this guy or tried his antenna.  And to be clear, the antenna is not called Commodium.  That's the name of his YouTube channel.

His price point compared to the performance seems quite good.  Yet I'd like a second or third opinion based on firsthand experience before I buy one.

I "tried" 2 of his antennas. IMHO, COMMODium would be more appropriate. Paid for it and was ghosted on product. I pushed back via PAYPAL or whatever. I never got a response email either. Never got a response otherwise. Over $200 down the drain. I got a couple Ed Fong's and they worked great!

Tons of good reviews in the comment section of this video.  Did you leave a comment on there about it?  Did you email him directly about it?

I think those 2 ideas together raise a big red flag.

Maybe it's a perfectly fine antenna at a good price...but I'd trust almost anyone's data more than the guy who's trying to sell the thing to me.

a basic ladder lead J-phole.  Pretty easy to build, lots of how toos on the internet..   I get a lot better performance from the Copper J-Pole which is also pretty easy to build, however they are a painto tune.   The Ladder Lead J-pole is also a pain to tune but if you follow your J-Pole calculator to the T it should get you less then 1:3 for the calculated bandwidth (GMRS).  If you use an improvised tune sliders for the copper j-pole (I've posted my version somewhere here) tunning the copper j-pole is a breeze down to 1:1..

Yes and Yes but I did not burn him down in the comment. I hope other folks have/will have good experiences.

And that, my friend, is exactly why I started this thread.  The search for more info.  :)

Build one..  There are lots of how to's on Google..

Someday I would like to try that.  I have studied the videos.  For now, the time and tools versus $30 to buy one from a Radio Hobbyist...   Plus to get one physically in my hands to see the finished product in person, this is a better choice for me presently.

I was in your exact shoes  several months back..  Stumbled on KB9's J-Pole and almost bought one.  Then I stumbled on one of his videos showing how to build one.  Then found his revised calculator for cutting them for various frequencies.  You are right, it's about equal in cost to just buy one built vs. buying the material to build one.  But at the end of the day, it was fun and rewarding to build it..   Also a very good learning curve. Defiantly not a slam dunk build.  Although I thought I followed instructions to the 'T' I was not getting very good SWR's as you have to be very precise where you solder the feed points which is also your matching adjustment.  I ended up coming up with another way to do this (see pic) and was able to get 1:1 - 1:3 in my band range for my repeater (Ch18)..    I did spend a lot of time building this, 90% of it was running...  I use this antenna for my portable 45W Camping repeater.  This antenna has talked 90 miles (line of site). no sweat.   You'll be happy with a J-Pole and KB9's is probably the best.

How well does the copper hold up outside?  I live in northern Wisconsin.  I would imagine that green patina will eventually form.  Will that affect performance?  Can the copper be coated/ painted? @WRUE951

mine has not taken on the green patina yet.  Its a portable antenna for my camping so its not setting out in the element s 24/7.
