radiodude46
I just recieved my IC-F61-2 for GMRS with the programing disk & cable. I was looking through the manual that I got offline and found on page 2 Function Display number 6, Compander Indicator. A brief explanationis: "Appears when compander funftion is activated." So what does the Compander function do? Stephen WRFW673K6AKF
WRAK968
Its not used for GMRS, only for commercial repeater use. It basically compresses the signal to reduce bandwidth from my understanding of it.
BoxCar
It compresses and expands the audio allowing a wider frequency range to be sent/received. Think of it as something as Dolby for radio. AdmiralCochrane
AdmiralCochrane
Companders are what make cell phones sound like 'regular' phones and not the cheap wireless junk that was first on the market. In olden times, you could tell when someone was on a wire at home or holding a cordless. Back in the stone-age of cell phones, Fujitsu was the first handheld using a compander. People where shocked when they called my number and discovered I was on a cell because the voice quality didn't give it away. Yeah, I rode dinosaurs too.
