Wouxun KG-805G programming

Question

Posted

Greetings!  New to the forum.  I've had my GMRS license for about 9 months and I'm also an amateur radio operator.

I recently purchased a Wouxun KG-805G HT, which is Part 95 type accepted for GMRS. It comes pre-programmed with the GMRS channels, including the repeater channels. The repeater channels are identified by number and repeater designation ("RPT20", for example). This makes things a bit unwieldy, because you have to remember the channel number and its relationship to the repeater frequencies you wish to use and then you have to manually go in and set the CTCSS or DCS tones every time you use that channel for a different repeater.

Mostly out of curiosity, I checked CHIRP to see if I could identify other unprogrammed channels in the radio. My objective was to program specific repeaters and their tones and names in those unprogrammed channels, if they existed. I found that CHIRP does not identify the KG-805G as a radio which it can program; however, I also found that if you use the program for the Wouxun KG-816, it does, in fact, allow the uploading and downloading of data from and to the radio. Doing so revealed that the KG-805G has quite a few unprogrammed channels. I put in my favorite GMRS repeaters into the CHIRP programming matrix and then successfully uploaded them to the KG-805G. I also stopped scanning on the pre-programmed channels in the radio and allowed scanning on the channels I had programmed, so now I can scan my favorite repeaters.

This may already be known to other KG-805G users, but I thought I'd put it on here in case someone didn't know.

Incidentally, I really like the radio.

Hello roc54, and welcome!

I own multiple KG-805G and have 80+ memories configured for local repeaters and ready-made spots available to receive codes for repeaters when traveling. That is an excellent find regarding KG-816 in Chirp. I will need to give that a try.

The software that came with the radio works, but it is a featureless dog of an application.

Yes, I like the radio too and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Just wanted to confirm that I have been successful using Chirp to read, change and upload new channel settings into a KG-805G using the KG-816 product option in Chirp. I found I was able to configure simplex and repeater channels, set tones, configure Rx only on select channels, edit names and change power settings. Made dozens of read-write operations.

Chirp does officially support the KG-805G so there is no ability to edit global radio settings. Only channel specific settings can be edited, but that is the main reason we all like Chirp anyway.

I began by reading in my current configuration which had been created and uploaded originally to the radio by the Wouxon software. I then cleared all the channel memories and rebuilt from scratch. I added settings in both the lower and upper range of memories. I found all settings that I created were uploaded and matched in the radio. When I read the settings back into a fresh Chirp file, they all seemed to be in alignment. I found repeater and simplex configurations to work fine.

In the future, I am likely to use Chirp for editing channel memories, and use Wouxon’s software merely to modify global settings.

Thought other owners of this radio may wish to know this has worked for yet another person.

If you learn anything knew in your own exploration, please share.

How many memory channels can be stored and you can RX/TX on all? I am very interested in this radio and have been worried it was like gmrs-v1 that can only tx on their preprogrammed 30 channels?

i haven't found a limit on my wouxun. i currently have 41 channels programmed (all gmrs) and all of them allow transmit.

i was pretty frustrated when i found that 'only the default 30 channels can tx' limitation in my gmrs 50x1 too.

There are 128 memories. All memories are usable for storing transmit-receive capable settings. I currently have 93 programmed and I can affirm you can transmit on all of them.

Hi, I just got a Wouxun KG-805G, and I'm wondering how to set it to receive a local repeater channel. The output for the "Metro 4" repeater in the Twin Cities is  Output: 462.650 MHz (Sponsored by The Gopher Amateur Radio Club at The University of Minnesota). I am confused about how to enter this frequency on my 805G, since it doesn't have a keypad (I don't think I can use Chirps as I have Mac OS). Can someone give me a bit of instruction please?

The base simplex channels (1-22) and repeater (23-30) are preloaded. The channel named "rpt19" (it will be preset 27)is the one that equates to a 462.650 output.

Tune to that channel using the channel knob or arrows, then hit menu. Scroll to "t-ctc and hit menu again, and use the arrows or channel knob to scroll through the list to the appropriate ctcss code. Hit menu to confirm....you can also go back a couple options in the menu and set "r-ctc" as well using the same method, if you want to filter incoming traffic to the repeater only. Hit exit, and you should be good to go.

Thanks much, that's very helpful!

Now, I'm confused about something. Their Output is on 462.650. I'm assuming that would be the receiving frequency? If I look for that range on the GMRS frequencies chart that looks like around GMRS channel 19 (462.6500). Whereas "RPT19" looks to be in the 467.6500 range. Am I missing something?

I never could find any repeater frequencies on my 805.  I did the YouTube thing and stopped short of calling the place I purchased it from.  I bought the recommended cable and down loaded Wouxsun's software.  I'm happy now, super easy to program and name separate channels with all the specific parameters needed.  I don't think the repeater channels were preprogrammed into my radio. There were none labeled RPT nor any spaces beyond  ch22.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no option for Mac OS users. :(

Slightly, yeah. Both channel 19, you'll receive on 462.650. on simplex (gmrs19, radio to radio), you also transmit on that frequency.

For duplex (rpt19, radio to repeater to radio), the radio is programmed to transmit 5mHz higher (467.650), which is where a repeater would be listening. The repeater transmits back on 462.650 (where you're listening).

Surprises me a little to hear, but yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like happened. I hadn't previously heard of any shipping missing the repeater presets. That said, it's fairly easy to program, and allows tx on any of the presets as long as they're inbounds for gmrs.

On the Mac issue, wouxun's stock software seems to get along well with wine in Linux, as I've used it with Mint Mate, so it may play well in a virtual machine.

See bold below. That's what I'm still confused about. Am I tuned to (have the radio set to) Ch 19 (which the radio calls 19) or Rpt 19 (which the radio calls 27)? Do I do both transmit and receive while the radio is set to RPT19 (27)??

So...radio to radio, ch 19, you transmit on 462.650, they listen on 462.650 as well.

Repeaters listen on a different frequency (input) than they retransmit (output) so it can be done real-time. Realistically, only one person can effectively use a frequency at a time, hence the different frequencies, and the RPT channels take that into account

When you're going to use a repeater on 462.650, yes, just leave the radio on rpt 19. Your radio knows to transmit on 467.650, because that's where the repeater is listening, and it retransmits on 462.650, because that's where you're listening.

I think the basic key is looking in terms of to hear each other, you have to be transmitting where theyre listening, and vice versa.

Hello.WRKS620. Question to all. I have attempted to connect my 805G to my windows 10 pc yet won't connect to any of the com ports? I am using a Wouxun cord and curious if this is a cord issue or windows issue. The radio unit will not connect to if using either Chirp or the Wouxun software. If it is a windows issue (have not used window for years-Mac user), can you assist? Thank you in advance.

There often is a driver that needs to be installed. Driver was supplied to me on both models of cord I purchased. I am running windows 10 both work with the driver installed. I believe driver can be downloaded from BTWR website as well.

It appears the only way to set the transmit power for a particular channel is in the programming table? I was hoping to assign the top or side key to change power but this option is not available. Seems the only solution is to double enter a frequency at high and low power?

Yes, that is correct. BTWR has however gotten Wouxun to change that on the newer KG-905G radio.

A simple way to use the 805G for repeaters is to just change your display (menu 19) to frequency.

Then you can see the freq for repeater channels and just set the TX tone as needed.

You generally don't need the RX tone unless you are getting interference.

The channel number is still displayed - just smaller.

It is actually the memory location but it's the same as the channel number for 1-22.

This scheme works pretty well and it's easy to toggle back to channel name using menu item 19.

I suppose if you use a lot of repeaters around home getting the software and programming channel names for each makes sense.

For occasional repeater use and travel my simple scheme is pretty good.

I change to NAME on my repeater channels so I can add repeater Name and last 3 of Frequency.  Those with no repeater in my travel vicinity are named RPT xxx.  Fit as many letters as your particular radio allows.
