Piorano Posted September 23, 2021 Report Posted September 23, 2021 Unable to connect to any GMRS nets in my area. Seems the only one is in Fort Pierce, FL. Is that the only one I can connect to? Very new to the GMRS hobby. I am licenced on GMRS and would like to participate in some of these weekly and monthly nets. Not much simplex here in Central Florida area - Winter Garden, FL, 34787 Thanks. Pio Romano WRMG448 WSCH851 1 Quote
MichaelLAX Posted September 23, 2021 Report Posted September 23, 2021 Welcome! You do not mention the model of your radio. If portable, drive closer to one of your local repeaters and see if that works. Once you can hit one repeater, helpful repeater users will tip you off to other operating opportunities. Be sure you are entering the proper CTCSS or DCS transmitting tone as required and noted in the detail of your repeater map. Quote
MichaelLAX Posted September 23, 2021 Report Posted September 23, 2021 Osceola 700 and Wedgefield 725 appear to be down according to the notes on their repeater pages here on myGMRS.om Be sure to check for the proper tone, for example 141.3 on Pasco 550 (I only set the tone for my transmissions and not for my reception, as I like to be sure to hear everything available, especially when I am traveling to use distant repeaters): WSCH851 1 Quote

There is still no net in central FL that i know of at least not in GMRS. But on good news there's a bunch of new repeaters that have gone online since you made this comment. I am actually the owner of one of those repeaters and a node connected to the mygmrs network. If you are interested why don't you get a node deployed in your home? All you need is a radio with a sound card, an antenna and cable, a raspberry Pi and internet access and you have a node in your house connected to the network that you can move around to other nodes to participate in any net's. WRTE516 Posted March 7, 2023 Report Posted March 7, 2023 The Lone Wolf System has an informal tech net every other Friday at 7PM EST. You can join on RF through any of our repeaters or nodes as well as the 411 on GMRSLive. Check us out HERE. Quote

Being mostly located in Central FL near UCF, I am actually one looking into this. I understand that MyGMRS is using Asterisk for this purpose... and with that I would be able to use my HT around my home and neighborhood on my own Node and hear the Nets, etc as it would be connected to the MyGMRS National Network. That said, I see there are others such as the Lone Wolf Network which I think is also connected to the MyGMRS network albeit that is were it gets a bit confusing as to what Node and system would better serve my needs. If I am understanding this right, the MyGMRS network is building a network such as like the amateur radio East Coast Reflector *dotcom with many ways to enter the system, which I would think is the way to go as GMRS gets more popular and as it does I would bet apps like Echolink could be modified for GMRS use, etc. Any advice on what worked for others regarding personal nodes? Equipment *Radio w sound card* used and so forth would greatly be appreciated and surely helpful to others over here. Thanks guys and 73 Quote
MarkInTampa Posted April 29, 2024 Report Posted April 29, 2024 Check out the Polk Co (Bartow repeater) net on Tuesday's at 7:00pm. It started a few months ago and there are usually 30-40 folks that check in a week. WSCH851, WSAE603, SteveS and 1 other 1 3 Quote
WSAE603 Posted December 4, 2024 Report Posted December 4, 2024 Does anyone know if Asterisk can be modified to act as a node between two locations - I have a server that I can host it on / use it as a registration server. What I am looking to is set one node at one location and another node in a second location or even as a mobile node in a vehicle as so it can be used for personal communications - of course anyone could pick up transmissions in the area of the node and that is not a problem at all. Thanks for any info, I think it would be a fun project. Quote
GreggInFL Posted December 5, 2024 Report Posted December 5, 2024 A recent FB post said there will be a net on Orlando 700 at 7:00 pm tonight. News to me. Quote

Dont be silly! @WSAE603 - you should make a new forum topic post, asking about the best way to go about linking GMRS radios/repeaters via Asterisk - I think it would be a great discussion topic and a great way for people to learn and discuss new ideas. I put together a hotspot for ham radio. Tonight I picked it up while driving on the interstate about half a mile from my house. It continued until I was nearly a mile away. It has 10 milliwatts and a 3 inch antenna. I was surprised. I already owe you beer!! WRYZ926 and GreggInFL 1 1 Quote
WRYZ926 Posted Monday at 02:18 PM Report Posted Monday at 02:18 PM @GreggInFL and @SteveShannon you two better throw your radios directly into the trash since they won't get 200 + miles of FARz. I can't help with GMRS nets in Florida. We have a monthly net on our GMRS repeater for those that want to participate. And for those that do not want to participate, that's fine too, their choice. A net is a good way to periodically test your equipment and make sure everything is working. I hope we never have to use any of our repeaters in an actual emergency but knowing that we can in nice. Socalgmrs Posted Monday at 05:05 PM Report Posted Monday at 05:05 PM Haha you’re a funny guy. in an emergency most likely a repeater will be down if cell phones and land lines, power are down. Wind flood snow fire ect In an emergency all you can count on is your personal system talking with other personal system probably just hts at that point. I find it funny people that count on gmrs or any other radio system especially some one else’s repeater in an emergency. Count on no one but your self. When you go through it you’ll understand. Quote
WRXB215 Posted Monday at 06:32 PM Report Posted Monday at 06:32 PM After Beryl hit and cell service was down, there were 2 ham repeaters and 1 GMRS repeater still up and running I was able to use. Quote
WRYZ926 Posted yesterday at 02:30 PM Report Posted yesterday at 02:30 PM A well setup repeater will have battery backup and generator backup power. Granted one still has to be able to get to the repeater site to keep a generator fueled and running. Hurricane Helena is just one example of properly setup repeaters with backup power kept running even when everything else was down. We have battery backup and generator backup at our main repeater site that has our 2m, main 70cm, and GMRS repeaters. So far we have not had to run the generator even in the bad storms with tornadoes. Quote
