Exterior bronco GMRS antenna

TNRonin

Question

I'm setting my daughter up with her bugout comms. I have the HT, and want to give her an antenna that will extend that range a little (about 5-6 miles) that she can put in place when needed. She has a 2022 bronco with a soft top. I need something low profile that will magnetically stick on her hood. This is not going to be intended as a permanent setup for her. Essentially she'll have an HT, with an adapter for the antenna wire. And when she is in transit she can set it up use it and take it down. It's basically so she doesn't have to have it set up constantly. Oh essentially set up a kit that she will access as needed. Your input is greatly appreciated. I'm also trying to be mindful that since it's not a full-time rig I don't want to spend a tremendous amount of money. I'm seeing those low profile antennas that use magnetic mounts on Amazon and those appeal to me simply for the convenience. TIA

How's about fabricating something that will mount to the spare tire or even a hood bracket? I usea ditch light mount to mount a pod and an antenna. Another ditch light mount on the driver rear hatch to mount another antenna. You could always also find a flag pole mount (used for sand dunes) as a basis.

At least you won't be scratching up the hood to mount an antenna on/off.

Also could be left semi permanent just routing the cable and using a bnc adapter to connect to handset.

Sorry that's not an option. Nothing permanent.

You have no option other than a bracket. The hood is aluminum and a magnetic mount will not stick to it. You may be able to put one on the roll bar if there is enough room above it and the soft top. Many JL guys do similar.

Good to know. Daughter lives about 90 miles away so I wouldn't know until too late. I'll need to see what she says now. Dang.

That's an idea. Will we be able to take advantage of the ground plane if it's stuck to her hood? a06a9cc9383cf3f63a0caac3adcbda43.jpg

No, unfortunately not. Here’s what the description says:

Requires a non-ground-plane (NGP) antenna such as the Rugged Radios VHF-1/2W-SPR and Rugged Radios NMO-MT-U, our most popular NMO Cable Mount option with 13' of cable.

Looks like a decent option. I was hoping to use a low profile. Going thru her firewall ain't happening to her baby.

I would be happy with a clamp mount tested, passed thru the firewall, then stowed to be reattached as needed.

I'll need to talk to her about this.

How about a suction mount like this:

This is probably the best option for a no impact mounting. The no ground plane antennas arent huge, though maybe not as low profile as hoped. Here's a Laird, at 15" https://www.arcantenna.com/products/laird-bb4502n-12-5-inch-uhf-whip-antenna-with-black-nmo-base-450-470-mhz

On firewall, it's hard to say without looking (the truck being 90 miles away and all), and I haven't done it with coax, but I've yet to find a firewall I couldn't find a way through for amplifier wiring (similar diameter to rg58 coax) without drilling any holes. Especially with a short piece of something thinner in there, or running the coax in unterminated. I've seen a couple that were terminated with something small like sma to allow easy feed through.
