unibrain Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 I dropped my radio and now the display doesn’t work. The backlight comes on but there are no letters. There is no visible damage and I’ve not tried opening the radio to see what’s going on inside. Is it worth getting repaired or is it time for a new radio? Quote
back4more70 Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 Hoe old is your radio? I'm going to guess that for the cost of shipping both ways plus a repair, you may want to simply replace the ~$120 radio. Quote
gortex2 Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 Unless its in warranty its normally not worth fixing. I'd toss it. Quote
WRUU653 Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 I have never taken one apart but it wouldn’t stop me. I would at least open it up. You’re not going to make it worse. I would be interested to see if the display became partially unplugged from the board when it dropped. WRHS218 1 Quote
SteveShannon Posted August 16, 2023 Report Posted August 16, 2023 Take it apart and see what popped loose. Is it worth fixing? If opening it and reseating the connections to the LCD doesn’t work then get a quote from the manufacturer. Then determine whether the cost is worth it to you. Nobody else can answer that question. unibrain Posted August 19, 2023 Author Report Posted August 19, 2023 I opened things up and reset the ribbon cable, no joy. I contacted buytwowayradios to see if they sell a replacement and they don’t. FYI, taking the radio apart is fairly easy. The key is to remove the antenna lock nut. Thanks for the suggestions. That radio will sit in the shelf as a donor if I ever need it. WRUU653 1 Quote

unibrain Posted August 19, 2023 Author Report Posted August 19, 2023 This may push me to become one of those sad people so I can spend WAY too much on radios. WRUU653 1 Quote
