WSAV285 Posted March 24, 2024 Report Posted March 24, 2024 Wife and I are planning a trip to Iceland this fall. Question is it worth it to take a HT on the trip or not. I have both a Ham and GMRS license but I'm not sure they would be of much use there. Thanks in advance for any help. WSAV285 (Terry) Quote
WRYZ926 Posted March 24, 2024 Report Posted March 24, 2024 It looks like you will be able to operate on amateur radio bands in Iceland with a valid US license. Here are a few links for you to read. https://www.arrl.org/us-amateurs-operating-overseas https://www.arrl.org/reciprocal-permit https://www.ira.is/english/ I did not find a definitive answer on GMRS. Guest Posted March 24, 2024 Report Posted March 24, 2024 You should be contacting Iceland for this. You don’t want to end up in an Iceland prison. Quote
WRUU653 Posted March 24, 2024 Report Posted March 24, 2024 I found this info here https://www.fjarskiptastofa.is/english/telecom-affairs/registration-and-licences/temporary-licences/ SteveShannon, WRHS218, WSAV285 and 1 other 4 Quote

WSAV285 (Terry) So what was the verdict? Did you have any hassle taking your radios to Iceland? Quote
nokones Posted 33 minutes ago Report Posted 33 minutes ago For citizens using radios in a foreign country, you should contact the United States Embassy and ask them that question. In some countries, Personal and Business Radio Services freqs may not be used for the same radio services in the other countries. The Amateur Radio freqs might be a different story. I'm not as smart as a Amateur Radio Operator, so I don't how that works in other countries regarding HAM freqs. For governments visiting and using radios in foreign countries, I had to contact the United States Embassy Regional Security Officer (RSO) in that respective country and get a channel assignment from the ITAC800 Channel pool.
