WRXR255 Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 I know of a few brands of Emergency locator beacons, namely the Zoleo and the Garmin InReach 2 I know the Queen of GMRS has the Garmin, and I have a Zoleo. Is there any preference to those more knowledgeable about both systems that makes one better than the other? I know better than to think a GMRS radio and or HAM radio is going to do squat if I and or others outdoors in an emergency situation need communication… and have that option only. I got the belt clip AND wrist strap on my boofwang, it should work, after-all, right? I do not think the radio is going to help much at first when a riot breaks out at my 8 year old daughters soccer game, i need serious emergency coms. Thoughts? Quote
Guest Posted August 2 Report Posted August 2 I’ve been involved with back country rescue since I was 16years old. Mid 90d. Back then you had nothing but the out door rules. When the spot came out they gave us some. I’ve been using them ever since. Now we have a spot g4. It’s a good unit. Affordable and does the job. We don’t spend weeks or months in the back country anymore but I still take it on every hunting and off road trip we go on. Quote

What do you mean “serious emergency comms”? Who do you think you will talk to if a riot breaks out at your 8 year old daughter’s soccer game? Riots don’t interrupt cell phones; call 911. amaff 1 Quote

I was being over the top for humor with that part. my main point was what is the best reach out and touch someone if there is a dire strait. I missed that attempt apparently. SteveShannon 1 Quote
WRUU653 Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 An eight year old girl armed with a soccer ball will knock that radio right out of your hand! No comms, no comms for you. WRXB215, SteveShannon and WRXR255 3 Quote

gortex2 Posted August 3 Report Posted August 3 Our SAR team and most in the state all use Garmin. I use it for work as well now and quite a few coworkers have gotten them. The mini is awesome unit for just send a message. For more emessaging I prefer the Inreach and it pairs with my Overland GPS in my truck so I have a 10" tablet to send messages with. Quote
