My husband just obtained his call sign and I have a question. Are family members allowed to create their own accounts here or are they solely for the call sign holder?

Thanks

Hi Tina. Welcome to the forum!

Should be fine as long as they use different names when signing up. The one call sign covers the whole family.

Awesome! Thank you.

Really that's a question for Rich as it is his site and he knows the registration requirements.

I agree. My understanding is if the call sign is already registered here it can’t be used again but @rdunajewski (aka Rich) is really the person to ask. I reported my own post in this thread so hopefully he will see it and properly respond to your (op) question.

@WRWE456 just because the FCC allows a family to use a single license, that does not mean the registration for this form works that way. Rich can program it however he wants. Maybe he has programmed that way or maybe he intends to some day. I can tell you, as a programmer myself, that not every feature is as easy as people think.

How often newly issue callsigns are updated in your data for new member registration?

Currently, only one account can be created per GMRS callsign as a security measure to prevent multiple random people from trying to register the same callsign. This works fine for families where one member is the coordinator of the communications, but I know it isn't ideal when multiple people have an interest in participating independently.

I was thinking about changing the user accounts on this website to allow a single "main account" per callsign. The account holder can then create multiple subaccounts sharing the same callsign: this way, the account holder/licensee controls who may share their license regarding a myGMRS account and we prevent the issue of random people trying to claim a callsign over and over again. Imagine how many people would try to claim mine, for example.

What does everyone think about that?

That sounds like a good solution to me.

This would be great if it the forum allows it.

Sounds like a great idea.  I wonder if that will help my issue of not being able to log in to the forum.  John WQGU515

I was recently introduced to the GMRS environment and have a family member allowing me to utilize his call sign while I test the waters and was wondering if this was ever introduced as a possibility? Was looking forward to learning from this community.

You can read everything on here without registering.  You can even ask questions like you just did as a guest.   I’d start with reading part 95 of the fcc regs. It will tell you what gmrs is and how it should be used.  Gmrs is a tool.    It’s a radio service for friends and family (people you know already) to use while doing an activity.  Hiking,  hunting, fishing, going to the mall, off roading, cycling, caravaning,  farming, ranching, ……. The list goes on.  So if you do anything with people where you need radio communications it’s the service for you and at $35 for 10 yeas and no treat and radios starting at $20 it’s pretty easy for most to get into.

what gmrs is not is a hobby, a way to male “contacts” with strange men, ham lite, a get as many radios ass you can afford and barely use them, chit chat about radios on repeaters…..

it may or may not be a good service for emerge comms depending on how you use it and what you expect from it.
