Deregulation; here’s your opportunity to make a difference!
Jaay replied to SteveShannon's topic in FCC Rules Discussion
They do that at the local nursing home close to me. I thought about noting the names used, and Calling their Admin and reminding them of the Hippa Rules. Maybe their use on Gmrs would go away. -

Yes. For sure. Skiing, biking, camping, and moving. We get a lot of good use out of them.

Great to hear. That’s what it’s for. I would not have figured you would have needed or wanted to use repeaters since it wasn’t a place you lived, worked or played. Gmrs is a tool. Gmrs is Not a way to meet strangers.

My wife and I are making an interstate move and it was great to have a radio in a Penske truck and one of our cars. In addition, we have two handheld radios. That made backing up the truck with a car carrier so much easier! She could direct me when I backed out of our original home. Along the way, she could pull behind me and let me know if there were any trailer stability issues at higher speeds. After a few hours, I had my wife drive the speed limit while I drove at a slower rate (trailer limit). We had some awesome range in Eastern Oregon. We had great range as she pulled away. Our radios have repeater capabilities but we kept them on a simplex channel. We said our goodbyes as she pulled away from the line of site. A few hours later, I caught up at the hotel. We have been long users of GMRS, and the service was awesome for the move. we hope that others get great use out of GMRS.

Folks need to get past this idea of 'more channels / frequencies' on GMRS. Out of everything that someone might want to change about GMRS, that's the one that's least likely to happen. The biggest issue is GMRS in is the LMR allocation for frequencies. We have commercial two-way above and below us. There are no more frequencies to be allocated to the service. And adding repeater pairs from the FRS frequencies really ain't gonna fly either because the interference issues that will be created by the bubble pack radios on those frequencies. Not to mention it would make all the current part 95 radios that aren't able to be flashed to add those repeater channels and make them obsolete. Which is what happened when CB was modified to have 40 channels from the original 23. While I don't like the idea of DMR or other digital modulation schemes being used on GMRS due to the issues that will create, it's a better and more reasonable option than getting more frequency allocation. They are NOT going to kick commercial users off their frequencies to give us more channels. -

I don't think you can set it on a interval timer. Kenwood's can be set that way.. Its probly better to set it for traffic only anyway
-
If they do, there's nothing about it in the instructions that came with the antenna. It seems like a good idea, though.
-
Have you tried contacting ICOM? Their phone support is very good.
-
Why do you need it to I’d. FCC doesn’t require it. None of the 20 local repeaters I have around me ID
-
I also have this repeater and by timer, i can not get it to ID to save my life. I've followed all instructions to the T and it will still only ID on TOT but not on timer. RepeaterID makes a general purpose CWID transmitter that simply hooks to the Kenwood port of an HT and the other into the ID device. from there it xmits the CWID from the HT that is progg'd to the repeater. it works 100% and i dont worry about this repeater ID'ing. I dont work for, or are affiliated with RepeaterID, just wanna help, i know the frustration.

An elementary school less than a mile from me uses FRS or GMRS (probaby only FRS but can't tell) for the teachers and administrative staff to communicate. I have heard some students names used and teachers names, but thy don't seem to share any real private info other than that. I have considered contacting the school and just making sue they are aware that they can be heard by others within a few miles of the school. No idea if they realize that they are not "Private" ... but have not contacted them yet because I wonder if they would think I am someone to worry about since I "have been listenting" to them. But yeah I wonder if they even have a clue that their radios can be heard by anyone with a cheap radio in the area.

Two Repeaters, 10 miles apart, will this work?

How the heck did I read right past that? Of course, if I read it a couple of days ago, it's entirely possible I forgot it. I'm old. That happens. -

At least the nursing home staff has not used any patients names that I have heard. -

Whatever electrical system you draw power from to power electrical devices you want to make sure that you are using the same earth grounding point or you very well either pick up other noises or transfer noises to the power system.

I've seen this in other industries, more than once. Someone invents the jet engine, but it gets rejected because it doesn't meet the propeller spec; the lightbulb doesn't meet the kerosene lamp spec, blah, blah, blah. I spent a couple decades working with a team moving our structural titanium alloy aerospace components to the medical implant field, which had been using stainless steel. I eventually concluded that FDA approval is the stamp of obsolescence.

Can confirm.. the petroleum based brands taste horrible.. But KY does not have much taste at all and it's much easier to wash out of your hair than the petroleum kinds.
-
We contacted one of our schools to make them aware that others could hear them on the FRS radios. They had no idea. They were giving out information like names and telephone numbers of parents during bus pickups etc. They stopped using them. You would be surprised how many don't know they're being listened to.

The local nursing home that is about 600 yards away from me has decided to start using FRS radios. And they picked channel 17. I bet they love it when we talk on the local repeater that uses repeater channel 17. We use both TX and RX tones on the repeater. I kept seeing my signal meter move but wasn't hearing anything. At first I thought maybe there was atmospheric ducting and we were picking up another repeater, That does happen on occasion. But then I switched to channel 17 and heard the nursing home staff. I know they are using FRS since their signal isn't very strong even as close as I am. I've been tempted to call on the radio for a clogged toilet in room 13 but have refrained from doing so for now.
