You should see some of my other finds. Figuring out where a used radio comes from is part of the fun collecting them. I usually do a read of the radio before reprogramming them for my use. I got one analog radio that apparently was used by the maintenance department at a nuclear power plant out east. That took a while to track down based on some memory tag names, a few lucky guesses and matching frequencies in the radio to what I found on the FCC's database for a particular license holder. Sometimes reading the radio the internal messages make it easy like the below. Usually it takes a lot more effort to figure it out.

It would take a lot more information to answer this question. What do you want to use it for? What are your options for installing an antenna? What kind of repeater is it?

Canadian Government is not the brightest star on this earth. I'm sure this has happened from some hilly billy cities in the U.S. but i would think very rare. In any case, the Comms guys in charge should be fired for letting radios out into the marketplace without wiping them

Not always. I got a radio from an eBay seller in Canada that was on a trunking system. I used a specially hacked radio programming software to get the info out of the radio without requiring the "system key file" from the trunking site. Some system admin claimed it wasn't possible without the key file. Oops.

But only in low light where its ability to send RF in even the dimmest of atmospheric conditions is better than a non dim light spec’d one when operating in late evening or at night.

There is more to this story than you read I am sure. This also happens way more than you think but dont go to this level. I apploud this county for pushing this and the FCC doing something. Too many folks think its fine to do what they do just like this site.

I have noticed that even though I have this "individual" ignored, if he's quoted his inane comments still show up. Then I just have to turn on my filter and ignore him.

Next time you are in Texas, set up a repeater at Hughes Apache Ranch please.

55 years ago I was voted class clown and sometimes I regress. I could understand wanting to set up a “base station” using a better antenna and higher powered radio in order to get more range. That’s much easier to do than a repeater and would give you the same range. What do you hope to achieve by having a repeater in your apartment? Are you planning to provide the repeater for others to use?

Got the voltage regulator on today it's back to normal voltage, now I can get radio back in tomorrow if it doesn't rain. Thanks again, WSEK634

He was actually new twice here. He quit once, had his name purged, and then slunk back in. That’s why there are all those idiotic posts attributed to “Guest” in the non-guest forums.

I have lived in apartments before. They were always small enough that I could reach from one end of the apartment to the other without a repeater. I could even reach from inside the apartment to the dumpster outside when my wife took the trash out.

Our 70cm antenna is at 900 feet and we get about a 35-40 mile radius of coverage. Our GMRS antenna is at 400 feet and we get 30-35 mile radio of coverage. And both bands have same dead spots depending on the terrain and trees. Our 2m antenna is also at 900 feet and we get a 80-85 mile radius with it. I mention it to show the difference between VHF and UHF. The 2m and 70cm repeaters actually use the same set of antennas and go into a diplexer.

The Calif High Desert offers a lot of locations with good elevation and wide open valleys. One repeater here siting on a 4500 foot mountain top (El Paso) can talk Palmdale - Lone Pine about 160 miles (Repeater sitting about center point). I've heard people talking on this repeater on HT's standing at Whitney Portals on the same path. I think dry weather has a lot of benefit to talk distance as well.

Welcome aboard, I monitor Thompson Station, Brentwood, both Franklin and Grasslands repeaters. We have not set up a formal net, but with 44 members we should be able to set up some days and times for shout outs. -
So it's, as stated above "We did some things." I guess I can live with that since it didn't brick the radio I tried it on. (And I must say that updating via the USB-C port is much more convenient than using a Kenwood programming cable.) Anyway, thanks for the info and feedback.

Complete Amazement, where is everyone ?
Davichko5650 replied to WSHU859's topic in General Discussion
I've only ever seen one other site that's close at all, and a very distant second at that. So distant that I can't even recall it's name or the URL. I'm here mostly as I'm into all facets of the radio world, but I do generally only use GMRS radios when out doing things, barely, if ever use a repeater. But interesting to see what else is going on out there and this is the best place to find that for GMRS. -

Good thing CostCo has those 35 packs - 29 for y'all and a six pack for me. -
We all value knowledge and experience here, but the way you're treating newcomers is out of line. Everyone starts somewhere, and being dismissive, impatient, or outright rude doesn't make you look more knowledgeable—it just makes this community less welcoming. If your goal is to actually help people learn and grow, then your attitude needs to reflect that. Otherwise, you're not building anything—you're just gatekeeping. You were new once too. Try to remember that.

Dimmy antennas are used to contact stations 200 miles away.
