This is a great take, actually. First: Yeah, that's why I decided that I was barking up the wrong tree when I programmed 128 channels into my RT76P. Only one repeater ever gets any action anyway, so… At that point I may as well just get a crystal-controlled set with a reed and a single channel, like old ancient Regency commercial gear. (Actually scratch the reed; that repeater has switched to DCSS as of the beginning of this year. I guess I could still use a reed to generate the tone and a MOSFET or solid-state relay to switch the signal …)

Been fucking around with the codeplug editor for weeks, and ordered a pair last night. They arrive tomorrow before noon, if you trust Amazon's predictions. I look forward to offering my thoughts once I have the hardware in hand! :D Right now I have Orlando 700, GMRS 19, and Skycom 725 as my only three channels in group one, with Skycom disabled. (Easier to reenable it than recreate it from scratch) Group two is the somewhat-busier tourist frequencies and repeaters, and group three is interoperability. Ideally I'd have kept group 2 for that, since it comes programmed to match the industry consensus "extra channels" up to channel sixty or something for interop, but that's now "watching rockets and rocking a surfboard" zone. I also have a codeplug for home and beach, each one substantially less pared down than 03-SIMPLICITY_ITSEL (character limit) which I think is going to be my default codeplug unless I have a reason to expect to need to talk to NPCs. I'm much more likely to have trouble handing a radio to non-technical family members; ask me how much I know. And ask me how much the repair bill has been so far! Oh yeah, and guess what percent of it's been paid as promised.

Six years down the line, and there's good repeater coverage in central Florida. As suspected, a 50w mobile with a bluetooth hand-mic has scratched one itch, and having repeater coverage at home has eliminated the desire to roll my own, even now that the RT97L makes operating a genuinely nice repeater technically trivial and generally affordable. Wouldn't have thought of this, but someone reacted to it recently.

Over the weekend my son’s phone was dead so he put in his Sonic order to me over the repeater. Oh well….

I wonder if it's user specific or regional, it's doing it for me.

Just a thought—for simplicity sake, an option to toggle between frequency view and channel view, sitewide (so map labels, and listing pages. I’ve been doing that in my brain (both directions lol) for programming purposes, and given some radios only show channels…it sure would make things easier at times…

DPL 023 is not a CTCSS tone. CTCSS is an analog tone in hertz and DPL is a digital code. The lowest standard CTCSS freq (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) is 67.0 Hertz (cycles). DPL (Digital Private Line) or DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) lowest code is 023 and the highest code is 754. DCS/DPL may be either normal (D023N) or inverted (D023I) They both function the same in protecting or keeping the receiver squelched until the tone or coded is present on the frequency/channel carrier. When the tone or code is interrupted by unkeying, the tone/code will cease thus the receiver will squelched and prevent other carriers without a tone or the incorrect code from opening up the receiver. Essentially it is a Nuisance Eliminator. Motorola trade name "Private Line" is misunderstood by many because no frequency is Private unless it is encrypted. Other radio manufacturers use a different name for their CTCSS/DCS or no name at all.

Me: I set our radios to channel 9 and locked the controls. Just use the side button, you don't need to touch anything else. KId: Okay, thanks dad! [fifteen minutes later] Kid: I pushed a bunch of buttons and now I can't talk to you. Me: Well, you unlocked the controls, set the radio to channel 3, set a PL tone, turned the volume all the way down, and... turned the roger beep back on. Little man loves his roger beep. They're FRS radios with a .5W TX max - we did a test and I can't pick them up outside the neighborhood. He did turn it to CH 15 (462.550) once and freaked out when it picked up local repeater traffic. That was fun. Couple of older guys talking about lunch and sports.

@Raybestos It's never stopped working for me. I did create a new password when prompted. The only update in SC in the past week is a short range repeater near Carowinds. If you need something in particular, I'll check on it for you.

You were very likely listening to a linked repeater. There was a group in Michigan that linked a large number of GMRS repeaters. At one point, when it was thought to be quasi-legal, they even had it on their powerpoint they presented to the State Police on why they should get some grant money and how they offer a public service. (They are using their own backhaul, on their own towers.) They removed all information of the GMRS linking off the internet when the FCC redefined their thoughts on it, but did not stop linking the (their) repeaters. The info is still out there, just not on their website anymore. Here's a map of their linked GMRS receivers. Whoops, won't let me upload a screenshot. But search on Mi8 GMRS. Look at the document that shows up on a .gov domain.

The only thing I've ever won in my life is a coffee mug from the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry YouTube channel. I was the first to correctly answer a cavalry history question during a livestream. It ain't much, but I won it. I'd rather win a GMRS repeater, though.

My kid likes running around outside with an FRS radio and talking to me, which is fun for both of us. He also likes kerchunking and hitting the call/alarm button until I take the radio away, which is only fun for one of us. But we all start somewhere.

i love the radio when RV'ing the highways with friends.. Defiantly would be lost without it

We have 4 or 5 that semi regularly use the repeater. My wife isn't one of them but on rare occasions she'll chime into a conversation. She has no problem contacting me though our repeater though. I still think she thinks it's our private frequency. I know it's not.

They must all be using voice modifiers on the repeaters around here

Yeah, back in the day of the old 3-watt analog "mobile phone" the wife would get into her car and call me to say she's on her way home from work. After a while I asked her why don't you call me from the phone on your desk before you leave? I told her that I love her, but you're costing me $0.25-cents each time you call from that damn phone. I'm glad the novelty wore off after a few weeks or I would be in the poor house.
