I'm aware of the use of DTMF codes to send instructions to a repeater or other device. Are you saying they can be used HT-to-HT or mobile-to-mobile to determine who receives your signal? Yes, I know there's no such thing as true security with any unencrypted radio signal, but I can envision situations where it would help reduce confusion.

Do repeaters have to be part 95 accepted
Lscott replied to Elkhunter521's question in Technical Discussion
As the rules are written they imply any radio transmitter that is certified for another service can be used on Part 95, GMRS, so long as the frequency, bandwidth and power requirements are met at a minimum. This is the problem with using Ham radios with the MARS/CAP mod's. Your typical Ham radio only has a Part 15 certification, which is mainly to ensure it can't be used to monitor cell phone frequencies. This would also preclude using a couple of Ham only mobiles to build a do-it-yourself GMRS repeater. That seems to be one of the advantages of using Part 90 radios. There are a LOT of quality used LMR, Part 90, radios to be had for reasonable prices. There are a few currently manufactured radios that work too. The link below points to one of my UHF radios. It will operate on FM/DMR or FM/NXDN depending on the firmware loaded. I have radios setup for both digital modes. As noted the radios I tend to get cover the 400 to 470 MHz band spread since this includes the armature band from 420 to 450 MHz. One point Hams forget is we are secondary users on the 70cm band, the government is primary, so it shouldn't be a surprise the radio has Part 90 certification over the range. https://forums.mygmrs.com/gallery/image/290-nx-1300duk5/?context=new The attached FCC grant shows the radio is certified for Part 90 from 406.1 to 470 MHz, so it meets the requirements, and I'm assuming legal under the rules for use on GMRS, just can't use the digital feature there, until the FCC gets off it's arse and makes some changes first. Oh, for those wondering what's up with the weird lower band spread frequency, 406.1 MHz, should read this. https://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/emergency-406-beacons/ I would avoid operating anywhere near this frequency. Some of my other commercial radios have a builtin GPS and can transmit position info. Not sure if it's compatible with the PLB radios. FCC NX-1300 Grant-4.pdf -

New to GMRS world looking for advise buying first radio
WRTC928 replied to WSCC962's topic in General Discussion
I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't break the rules by accident. If the radio isn't type-certified for GMRS, I think the user should at least know that. Apparently, some people wouldn't use the radio if it isn't type-certified, at least so they claim. Probably nothing official will happen to someone who makes a pest of him/herself, but they'll certainly earn the hatred of a lot of fellow radio users. Of course, pests usually don't care or they're even happy about being hated, so that's not really a deterrent. The person who figures out how to put an a-hole filter in a radio will be able to buy a private island. -
Just passed my General class test on Saturday!!!!

Could be, cw, the original digital mode, can have a certain rhythmic cadence to it, as do many of the digital modes. The other thing I find interesting is the number of amateur operators I run into with a SIGINT background similar to mine. -

Baofeng gm15pro shows long antenna included, but not shipped?
WRTC928 replied to a topic in Guest Forum
This is incorrect. Almost every Baofeng I've bought had a 15" antenna -- not folded but bent around the interior of the box. I'm looking at one right now. Upon removing them from the box, they spring to life. In fact, they usually try to jump out of the box as soon as I open it. So far, I haven't seen one that took so much of a set that it wouldn't straighten out. -
I spent a decade in this Asia too. The one thing I never understood was why they would sometimes do both, using a spelling of their westernized Chinese (etc.) name with such bad phonics that westerners couldn't help but pronounce it wrong. So now they had the 'westernized' name they introduced themselves to you with, the name everyone who hadn't spoken closely with them or been corrected used for them based upon spelling, and their original Asian name. Somehow, we survived the 90s...

When I worked in Taiwan in 1992 that was something almost everyone there did, pick an anglicized name. It wasn’t done to mislead anyone, but rather to make it easier for English speakers to meet them and remember them. In my opinion there were way too many people who fit the mold of the “Ugly American” who couldn’t or wouldn’t even try to remember how Chinese names work. More than once I heard jerks say “Why can’t they have normal names like us?”

What I've noticed with some of these CCR vendors is they use fake American sounding female names for either a Chinese person or an automated bot. With the use of AI increasing, expect more of that.

So far the customer service I've had with my Btech RPT50 has been outstanding. Sent them an email yesterday (Sunday) and it was responded to by a person (Katy) in 10 minutes. I didn't expect a response until sometime today and let them know I was impressed with their quick response. So far the repeater has worked well. Initially I HAD to do an update to get DCS tones and they replaced a defective duplexer that seemed to be with most of the original units. Since then they've had an update to activate the microphone which use to be only a keyboard input device and one other bug fix which did not affect me. Maybe a rough start but that's what happens with lots of gen 1 products.

Baofeng gm15pro shows long antenna included, but not shipped?
LeoG replied to a topic in Guest Forum
Pretty much all my H3s came with 15" antennas. They were flexible enough to be in the relatively square box. They sproinged to life as soon as they were removed from the box. No chance of kinking. But I have no answer for you about you not receiving the antenna that you thought was included. - Yesterday

this site does not HTML 'loop' it's data so the new version of Excel offers some nifty data swiping tools (Data Transform Import). With a little VBN code you can get & sort almost all data with minimal hassle for offline use. Excel will even format KML tables for you..

not a good idea here in Calif... Too damn hot and dry

its a $2500 fine here but now one cares..

For the most part our police let people be unless there were complaints. And according to the scanner there were very few complaints. Didn't hear any EMS calls for fireworks related injuries either, so that always nice. The one day all states should allow it is July 4th. It's definitely a reason to celebrate.
-
A lot of police patrols were out trying to catch people using them
-
Had a quiet 4th because here where I am at we passed an Ordnance that anyone gets caught with or using illegal fireworks there will be an $1,000 fine that's why it was quiet all night.

one of my RV friends struggles with the ghost antenna when trying to talk to traffic behind him when he is pulling his 5th wheel. His is mounted on his truck roof about 3 inches in front of his third brake light. It works pretty good to the front where there is no blockage or line of site. I have a midland whip mounted on the roof and don't have those same issues..
