Just because you can find a way to pick the lock and start a car that’s sitting on a public road it doesn’t give you the right to do so. Get your own car and drive the same road all you want, loan it out to neighbors and friends if you want. Feel free to pay for whatever fuel or power source it uses, parking fees and insurance and leave the keys in it with a sign that says free to use. You are not entitled to use someone else’s car without permission because it uses public roads. The GMRS repeater is owned by an individual. It’s his or hers to do with what they want. The FCC rules and common sense back this up. It doesn’t matter if it’s for their own family, or a family farm, or a radio club, or they just let it sit there unused, it’s not yours. Sure it’s nice when people make their repeater open for others to use but it’s a permission given not an entitlement. I find it amazing that this concept is so hard for some people to grasp.

I have a old Uniden set that needs batteries so I nosed around on the batteriesamerica.com site and found a set ! They have batteries for quite a few different models in the 46/49 mhz. and 902-928 mhz. range.

I would at least try to get the antenna up higher than the house if possible. Not everyone can get antennas higher than trees in the area. There are all kinds of options when it comes to antenna masts. A study flag pole will definitely work as will chainlink fence top rail or 1 5/8" fence posts with couplers. Satellite dish/J mounts also work well. Some j mounts are 1 5/8" diameter and can be extended using couplers and 1 5/8" fence posts. Just remember to properly secure any mast with wall clamps and guy wires/ropes, depending on installation, to keep them from falling. I made a mast from 1 5/8" fence posts for my Comet GP-9. I used j mounts for my Comet CA-712EFC and HF cobweb antenna. I used an eight foot piece of 1 5/8" fence post on the j mount to get the cobweb up a little and it is secured with guy ropes.

About 15% at most. Figure close to 10% but it's all dependent on terrain and weather.

Here is a example of LOS communications that say Kenwood dual band ht have done with a Arrow dual band beam antenna and the HT only pushing 5 watts. ISS ring a bell to anyone, voice and packet. There is some advantages with amatuer that gmrs don't have.

I live near a military base, we used to listen to military aircraft between 220-400 Mhz. Nothing really exciting, mostly air traffic control stuff and an occasional 'target locked' announcement. I think they use LF as well.

That’s correct. For UHF it’s several percent further than the visual horizon.

As I understand it, that is to the physical visible horizon, but RF propagation usually follows the curvature of the Earth some fraction beyond the visible horizon.

In my opinion, it really depends on your expectations. 15 feet gets you about 5.5 miles to the RF horizon. 35 feet will get you out to about 8.5 miles. 50 feet gets you about 10 miles.

My wife gets me 25'-30' telescoping flag poles for $50 and less from Temu. They work great!!

I'm towards the outer ranges of most of the repeaters ranges but the Wouxon KG1000G+ and (current temporary) short stub mobile magnetic mount is able to hit them most of the time. However, reports are that my signal is on the weak side at full power into the Moline repeater and others. I often simply listen to the Nets/Skywarn and general chatter in the evenings. I'll be upgrading my antenna (J-pole or Yaggi) and height at the home base to provide a clearer signal into the repeaters which will improve participation in the Nets / Skywarn. In addition to radio, I enjoy exploring the great outdoors, welding, and carpentry. I work in the large scale industrial bioprocessing industry as a research and development scientist and data analyst.

Maybe you have the newly discovered charging problem. I charge mine in the cradle at home and the one I keep in my shop by USB. I don't usually remove the battery from the HT unless I'm putting a fresh battery in the HT.

Mine ALL transmitted out of the box. Then after a week or so quit hitting repeaters then I put them on the meter and nope.....wattage output is gone. Doesn't even register on the meter. . . .

He owns the repeater. You can use the frequency all you want. Simplex, Duplex just don't access his repeater. There are a whole bunch of different tones you can use besides the one single one he's currently using.

It's funny how he thinks he can give the govt $35.00 and he has free reign on anyone's equipment whether they want you to use it or not. Doesn't understand that all I'm doing is using the frequency and I don't think I own it. And the repeater isn't active unless I'm using it which is minutes a day, which doesn't impact anyone. And the license means he can purchase his own equipment to use on the "free airwaves". If he's cheap he can buy a couple HTs. Or maybe he can buy a mobile and a base setup and use the "free airwaves" to talk to all his friends and family. Or better yet, spend a lot of money and setup a repeater and then open it up to the public so everyone has access to it. And all of these are his own choice because all that $35.00 does is give you permission to press the PTT button on the transmitter. And that's it.

I guarantee that dude has never seen real boobies in his entire life...
