The cigarette lighter is the worst thing to use, especially for a 50 watt radio. The lighter port is usually only rated for 10 amp and a 50 watt radio pulls double that on transmit. Plus there is a greater chance of getting RFI into your vehicle wiring harness that way. Your best bet is to run the radio positive lead to the battery and the radio negative to a chassis ground. This is especially true if it is a newer vehicle equipped with the battery management system.

Socalgmrs lives in a great area for UHF. He really needs to take a trip out to the NE and experience hilly and mountainous regions where sometimes 50 watts won't get you 2 miles.

Post which channels you are programming and we can then dianose the problem. You may be trying to set a simplex only channel to repeater use and theradio's firmwre is blocking you.

I programed the BTech-50v2 radio with chirp and the offset on the radio is not staying programmed from the software when I upload it to the radio am I doing something wrong ???

for right now i am using the cig lighter plug for now was doing some testing

Thank you all for the guidance. I’ll do some listening. Thank you Radioguy for the link. As to why, we are located in a low area with a mountain to our east and west. To the the north and west of us there are two good repeaters but they are 18 and 31 miles away. Handhelds don’t work.

How is the radio hooked up? Both directly to the battery?

btech gmrs-50v2 when i key up im my truck i get feed back in my stereo even when the radio off any one know y ??? it just started it never had it before low power it doesn't but it will in high and mid

There is no formal process other than obtaining a GMRS Lic. Follow the FCC rules and have fun, There are several communities where repeaters coehiist on the same channels, And tell the guy asking you "why you want to have a repeater" to pound sand into he Grand Canyon..

I did too,, back in 8th grade.. We used to steal the stuff from Science Class and toss it down the hallway..

If you had read the fcc gmrs rules that you swore you understood before you paid your fees you would not have to ask this question. I guess the baby sitter that posted the link to the rules was right. Well not really since you still didn’t bother reading them. NO! THE FCC DORSNT CARE IF YOU PUT UP A REPEATER. So you listen on all simplex repeater out outs 15-22. You check sites like this. Then you select an unused pair and turn on the repeater. The real question is do you need a repeater? Why do you want it? Do you and your friends do stuff in the area that simplex doesn’t work? Farm, off road area, hiking park race track ect….. can you get the antenna up high enough to matter? Most, like 99% of people don’t need a repeater. What’s the benifit? Or are you just trying to chat with strangers men on the air waves.

There is no coordination through the FCC. Self-coordination is the typical method. If you're already thinking about installing your own 20 watt repeater, have you determined that there are no other repeaters in your area that offer you the coverage you need? If so, you should have a pretty good idea already of what pairs may be available in your area.
