They're far, far better radios than anything Midland or BTECH sell, sold, or will sell for the foreseeable future. WRAK968 is about right as far as pricing...880s are a commodity, nothing more.

New guy here from Albuquerque, NM. I just recently got my license and have been looking at the Map section on this site. I have gotten access to the local repeaters in my area, which was fairly simple, but as I have looked at repeaters further away, i see some of them have a tone in and a tone out. I understand how to get the Tone say 141.3 Hz to hit the repeaters in my area, but how to I do two seperate tones for a repeater. I am currently running a Midland MXT275? I understand that there are much better radios out there, but for now i am gonna use this radio, any help would be appreciated. EXAMPLE: freq 462.625 Tone out: 100.0 Hz and Tone In: 114.8 Hz GMRS Channel 18 and code would be 12 for 100.0 Hz

Today, I put together a new portable repeater antenna setup together. I do a lot of work with Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Often, we need a repeater setup so our people can run around with HT's and still be able to communicate direct with everyone. The antenna is setup for 2m, 70cm and GMRS. In all services, the SWR is 1.2:1 or better. It's sitting on top of a fiberglass mast. The total height is 47 feet from the ground to the top of the antenna. The bottom of the antenna is 40' from the ground. My son Nick is next to it to use as a reference. I tested it out on 2m. Full quiet to another station 40 miles away, with only 5 watts. I'm pretty happy with that. On 70cm and GMRS, I was full quiet to a repeater 22 miles away with just 2 watts. I am pretty happy with this setup. I am going to be doing a training drill on March 28. Nice setup but watch the Tripod you have. I tried similar setup for our SAR team in the past and it didn't last well in some wind even with guy wires up. We since switched to a military style mast kit we found here - https://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTENNA-TRIPOD-29FT-ALUMINUM-PORTABLE-TOWER-MAST-KIT-NEW/361384099911 It is night and day better and faster to set up that what we had before. It cost a bit more but in the end it was worth it. The selling point of the tripod is the custom "tripod" adapter he ships with it. Here it was last summer in the national park. This was hooked up to a mixed mode Quantar for an event we handle comms for.

V1 and V2 firmware ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. This is because of minor hardware differences inside of the radio as well as some features the V2 radio has that the V1 radio doesn't. Overall these features aren't really used in GMRS and are more towards commercial radio For example enhanced fleetsync functionality and the available use of some MDT hardware. I have several TK880's both V1 and V2. V1 radios I used to build a small portable repeater that I can set up anywhere, even in a campground. The V2 radios are installed in our vehicles and while we use fleetsync for radio ID and text messaging on my local repeater, there isnt much use for it when I go onto another system. This is because the Fleetsync codes we use may be different to other users. Anyways, If the offer is right, $20-30 for just a radio, or maybe $50 for radio and mic in fair condition, go for it, Anything more and you could likely do better on Ebay.

I laughed so loud I woke my wife up. A friend of mine was going to put one on his Range Rover. I told him to just give me the $10 and sell his radio, because the end result would be the same, only I will at least be able to get a cheeseburger and a coke. LOL

I don't believe the Midland radios can do split tones; split tones are typically hard-coded to a channel or a list of OSTs when programming the radio. Great to see another GMRS licensee in Albuquerque! I'm on the Sandia 675 repeater quite a bit; there's usually somebody monitoring after 5PM weekdays.
