  1. And, if the SWR on both is 2:1 or lower, seal everything up put away your tools and leave it. If you keep trying to “fix” it you will end up with an antenna for the 100 gigahertz band.

  2. Back in the old days, we used to have "CB Jamboree" events out here in the midwest that would bring folks in campers & RVs from across the nation. Perhaps one of these days, (not soon due to Kung Flu) but one of these days someone could host a "GMRS Jamboree" for the same purpose.... get together for fun, food, and fellowship - and have a big swap meet to swap radios, antennas, parts, and bushel baskets of bull.. uh, chips.

    List of acronyms?

I think a fundamental problem is that many of the more difficult acronyms are actually slang and the more common actual radio terms (SWR, LOS, etc.) can be looked up online. For example, the term CCR only appears once in the three lists posted by Lscott, and then it is defined as “Central Control Room.” However, I do think the initial comment about newcomers to GMRS understanding acronyms is valid. So, I would suggest two things. First, if you use an acronym in a post, note it’s meaning at the first reference. Example: GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service)... And second, if you see a term you don’t understand, do as TomWRHZ479 did, ask.

    List of acronyms?

Originally "Handie-Talkie" from the old Motorola terminology for a handheld radio (I believe they were the first to have one that "fit" in your hand, so they coined the term). Now HT is more of just a quick abbreviation for a handheld radio in general, many of us aren't thinking of "Handie-Talkie" unless we're REALLLLLY old.

  5. That brings to mind the "Coffee Breaks" my local CB club would organize on holidays. We'd set up at an Interstate rest stop, or perhaps a local mall parking lot on a major US Highway, and serve coffee, water and donuts to weary travelers.

    Doubly narrow banded?

I picked up an old FRS/GMRS HT (handheld) for my grandson when (or if) we get to fish/camp this fall. I understand the perils/drawbacks of mixing a narrow band with another transceiver that is wide band, which prompted me to look up the HT's FCC certification and emission type. I also understand we're OK going wide on GMRS, but here's the link to the emission type designation for the used walkie. https://fccid.io/Emissions-Designator/5K64F3E Am I missing something, or is this HT twice as narrow than the narrow banding that's gone into effect on other bands? 5khz versus 10 khz? I'm keeping my fingers crossed my wires are crossed.

    Doubly narrow banded?

Wow. Hard to believe I was correct in reading the FCC info. I wish it was more user friendly, because the marketing claims on range that appears on packages is identically outrageous, then you read the test results on output required by the FCC and you're really wondering what kind of stuff the advertising department is smoking. Thanks. I will be conducting a test before I decide whether to keep the radio around Berkinet. Hopefully it will surprise me. Radios are a big help when you're fishing a noisy trout stream, that's for sure and the last thing I need is one that can't be heard over a pool holding some nice lunkers. As usual, the folks here are the best.

    List of acronyms?

I think this group coined the term "CCR" to mean what it does here. For 50 years before this forum, I, and many others used the term "CCR" to refer to a quartet of musicians: Stu Cook, Doug "Cosmo" Clifford, and the Fogerty brothers, Tom and John.

  9. There are a couple of techniques. I personally tune for the center frequency of the band I plan on using. To be sure you are centered, you check the highest frequency you will use and the lowest frequency you will use. If the SWR is the same on both, you are good. If the SWR on the high frequency is higher than on the low frequency, your antenna is too long. If the SWR on the low frequency is higher than on the high frequency, your antenna is too short. The biggest problems you will run into with GMRS antenna tuning is, unless you have an antenna analyzer, that method is tough to use since you can't tune to the center frequency. Also, in centimeter radio, if you trim the antenna as little as 1 millimeter, you can drastically change the SWR. So, its a slow process and easy to mess up an antenna.

    List of acronyms?

And, that reference was wrong. But, there is another element at work here, one that shows up from time to time on these forms. It is the case of one person needing something that requires other people to do the work to produce. And, where the people capable of producing “whatever,” because of their ability, are the ones who specifically have no use for the end product. Perhaps another way to approach this would be for the people who need an acronym defined to maintain the list of acronyms. Anytime someone finds a term they do not understand, once they get a definition, they could add it to that list. In that manner, the people creating the list would be the ones most likely to benefit from it, and the list, by its nature, would contain the most needed definitions.

    List of acronyms?

Actually, I was suggesting that it be defined on first reference in any post, or at least the first time referenced in a thread.

    List of acronyms?

I was going to tackle this project, and compile such a list. ...however, after researching radio and electronics related acronyms, shortcuts, and abbreviations for about 20 minutes, I realized that it was overwhelming, so the only one left for me to consider was OMG!. ...and I quit. Will be happy to answer one-at-a-time as needed, just not publish 14,000 at once.

    List of acronyms?

CCR is a common one for "Cheap Chinese Radio" which includes Baofengs, Wouxuns, and such. I think having a list would be good!
