Joe, No repeater is ever safe open or closed. Scanners today can find PL tones on any frequency. So if someone wants to be an ass they’re gonna be. Even so, some radios are very easy to program and if someone really wants they can just key up every PL tone till they find the right one. Unfortunately there’s some nasty low life people that have nothing better to do but to cause interference on what ever tickles their fancy. Even on police, fire and rescue this happens. It’s those people who ruin it for everyone even scanner enthusiasts because a lot of jurisdictions are going digital and encrypted.

Just for general information, I've modified my ham license to reflect the area I'm currently living in. N4GIX is now N9GIX. I have tried twice to change my "Display Name" but for some reason it isn't working... I remain the same good-natured old curmudgeon as before of course!

You would have better luck with a 1/4 wave on the mount than that antenna. Inside is litterly a circuit board with a brass strip. Its about as good as a rubber duck.

There is a reason. GMRS has a fee payment arraignment system in place and requires no testing, only payment; all that they have to do is reduce the fee, everything else is in place. Ham requires testing and confirmation and at this time requires no fee. Its a whole new ball of wax.
