Coaxial cable
AdmiralCochrane and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a question
You asked a question that results in a very specific answer. As soon as you use the word "best" without defining what qualities are important to you and as soon as you said "least amount of signal loss" you boxed in the people who might suggest something. You probably don't really mean "best", although I cannot possibly know for sure. Most of us cannot truly afford the "best." You also probably don't truly mean "least amount of signal loss." Again, I cannot possibly know for sure. Perhaps you should provide additional information. Do you have an unlimited budget? Then by all means lean towards Hardline. What's your actual communications situation?2 points -

Last fall I purchased a Wouxun KG935G and two Wouxun KG1000G radios from Buy Two Way Radios. One KG1000G was for my truck and one was for a base station. Recently, when powering up the unit in my truck, it would display the model and voltage and would go no farther. I contacted BTWR and John Sorrentino had me do a couple of checks and decided to send me a new face plate at no charge since the unit was under warranty and that solved the problem. BTWR has been a great company to deal with and I highly recommend them.2 points

Bring your vehicle out and have your mobile radio checked out! We will check your power output, antenna tuning and the antenna system SWR. Along with testing your systems, we can make recommendations on improvements and if the opportunity exists, help make some improvements. We are going to meet in the Target parking lot, on the far end away from the building, near 5 Guys (shown in red circle). We'll bring out a table, canopy and some tools. Let me know if there are any questions.1 point

Coaxial cable

Least amount of loss, aircore hard line. Like heliax. Usually, used on repeaters. Avg $2-7 a foot. Most commonly used for 100ft. Probably lmr400. Acceptable cost and acceptable losses. Avg $1-4 a foot. You could also look at lmr600, but it gets to aircore levels of stiffness, which can make routing difficult. Keep in mind the connectors also come into play. Really high quality "n" connectors can average $25 each. So it's best to set the budget. Your expectations and meet in the middle or what you are comfortable with. You mean you're not choosing the cartel mule shipping option? Nevermind, they also report directly to several 3 letter agencies.1 point

This is solely my experience and not a scientific comparison. I had Ed Fong's DBJ-UHF antenna mounted on the rooftop for a few short months. It worked reasonably well and had an acceptable SWR for my purposes, though I don't have the SWR number recorded. Unfortunately, I went up on the rooftop to check the mount on a clear day after a period of harsh winter weather, and gave the mount a slight twist to assure myself that the PVC was still nice and tight. When I went back to the radio, there was no reception and a check of the SWR showed it to be extremely high. When I tweaked the antenna, I broke the solder connection in the base, which is my fault and not necessarily a strike against Fong's antenna. I replaced it with a Tram 1486, which cost more, but is also more robust. I was able to trim the Tram to an SWR of 1.01:1 with the unit mounted on the roof, and I don't feel the need to go check it to see if the PVC is still secure in the end caps. Reception is very good with the Tram, though I don't have the instrumentation to accurately compare it to reception with the Ed Fong. My signal reports seem to be better with the Tram, though that is subjective as well. Ultimately, I was fine with the Ed Fong, and I am probably a little happier with the Tram 1486, mostly due to it's robust construction.1 point

Tram 1486 for GMRS use and tuning of it

Compare the specs: Tram 6.5 dBd, which is ≈8.6 dBi Fong 2.2 dBi - it has about the same gain as a dipole Tram is fiberglass encased Fong is contained within PVC On paper the Tram looks better.1 point -

Congratulations... you wrote the dumbest thing I've read on the internet today! You should be proud. You beat out a lot of competitors.1 point -
Personally, I prefer to buy from the radio stores for my equipment, I don't support Amazon or the big box stores I prefer to support the radio stores, whether they're individual shops [R&L, Chatt Radio, The Antenna Farm] or small chains [HRO], plus I believe that the stores are going to make sure that they sell genuine brands, not knock-offs or counterfeits I've purchased from Signal Stuff also, he's not a store but an individual [with helpers] I apologize for hijacking the thread, we now return you to the original topic1 point

The OLYCOMM repeaters have general use "open" tones and you can read about them here: https://www.radioofhope.org/oly-comm-volunteers I listen and sometimes participate on OLYCOMM3 and it's fairly active. There's a weekly social net on Wednesdays 8:30pm - 9:30pm, and a weekly tech net Wednesdays 6:30pm - 7:30pm.1 point
