  1. Rather than deleting it, why not tell us how you solved it so others benefit also?

The PL tones only reduce the probability of interruption. They were never designed to protect your transmissions. But the use of the word Privacy was misleading.

@JamesBrox The fact that you are hearing a transmission doesn’t mean it’s in the open. It may simply mean that you have no receive tone set on your radio. If that’s the case you will hear everything, whether it is sent using PL tones or not.

There is no need to overcomplicate this like so many here tend to do: YES - If you hear a morse code ID on simplex, that likely means there is a repeater within range NO - this does not mean the repeater is open and this does not mean that no RX/TX tones are required to use the repeater If it is a repeater you cannot use it on simplex - you will hear it, but you cannot reach/use/transmit on it via a simplex channel

If you tell someone that over the air, unless it is a business/LMR frequency that you have paid for, you deserve snark comments. Nobody can claim that you cant use a channel.. Well, they can, but you can ignore them or laugh at them when they tell you that. Then CAN claim that you cant use their repeater, and while you should honor their request, there isn't anything they can do to stop you, and the FCC wont care, just just play nice.

technically speaking,, they can't deny you use of the ch or frequency as long as you are following FCC rules. If you are interfering with their use of their repeater, they can report you to the FCC, but the FCC is not going to respond. And if they don't want you using their repeater they can tell you not to use it, turn it off of or begin using PL Tones.. Just use the radios with respect to others and follow the rules...

I agree with the first part of your post but I believe an open repeater means the owner is inviting others to use it. You will know if it’s open or not by it being listed that way. Also why does a squelch tail or roger beep mean it’s an open repeater?

  9. Those little radios can get addictive. Trust me on that point.

  10. Who would own and operate the repeater? New GMRS licenses are only issued to individuals. There are no new government or commercial licenses. Each of the park personnel would be required to be privately licensed in order to transmit. It’s just really not the way GMRS is currently intended to be used.

    More Duplicate Repeaters

@rdunajewski Another seven duplicates posted. This time from WRYH413. This has become so common. Others who have done this said it was by mistake. I wonder if there is a way to fix this problem? Add a pop up when posting a repeater that request verification of ownership? Enter password to verify you own this repeater? Changing the phrase “my repeaters” to “repeaters I own”? I am not a coder so I have no knowledge of the best way to fix this but it seems like it is worth a look.

  13. Its hard to cover all GMRS radios, but the terminology is not standard. in and out tones are a big one. And repeater offsets. not all GMRS radios call it the same. And maybe a word on "Chirp" I've had alot of issues with it.

  14. You should be able to here from the repeater on your UV-5R, no tone needed to listen. It may be your radios are to close to eachother though. desensing can happen when radios are close to eachother causing one not to receive transmissions. Try moving them further apart like fifty feet or so.

  15. Actually there’s nothing wrong with you transmitting to the repeater and listening on your UV5R. It’s totally within the rules and if anyone tells you otherwise they’re full of it. But transmitting on one radio and listening on another right next to it doesn’t always work because the receiving radio “desenses”, which means it is swamped by the stronger signal and fails to reproduce it. That’s especially true for inexpensive radios.

    More Duplicate Repeaters

The listing have minor differences yes, like who owns them. I like the idea of writing something in that prevents duplicate entries. This happens a lot (the second time this week) and it seems to always be new license holders (this guy has had his for 9 days and listed seven repeaters as his). They are not and it wouldn’t surprise me that he has no idea what he has done. I am hoping that Rich can do something so he doesn’t have to keep fixing these problems, repeater owners are not getting angry with people that don’t know what they are doing and when we all see a listing we know that’s the owner to contact.

Repeaters output on the same frequency as the simplex channels (15-22). Only the input is different. What you hear on simplex is the same as from the repeater. No different. When you are on a repeater channels (23-31) and you have tones set then you won’t hear the simplex but simplex still hears you. Hope that helps.

    Morse code ID

No. A repeater can ID on the output (simplex) but still have tones to access it. It’s very common to hear the ID morris code on the simplex channel. You hear everything on simplex but if you have the output tones set on the repeater channel you’ll only hear what’s coming from the repeater. Some people set their radios with only the input for a repeater with the output off so they hear all that’s on the frequency. Hearing a repeater ID on simplex has nothing to do with being open or closed.

    Tropical Storm Warning

please remember that there is no such thing as a "small hurricane" and that even "only" a tropical storm can be very dangerous, so don't let your guard down (trust this Floridian who weathered 8 hurricanes and too many storms to count!). Also, please remember that most people die *after* the storms. And we all know that anything named "Hillary" is infinitely evil, right? Good luck and God Bless.

Some repeaters ID without tones, even though they require tones to access them. That doesn’t mean they’re open. Some repeaters have tones on the input but not the output. That doesn’t make them open. Some repeaters use input tones and output tones. That doesn’t mean they’re open. It’s more likely that a repeater that doesn’t require tones to access it is open, but it’s not a rule.

    Tropical Storm Warning

my town is already setting up sand bag locations and they have all the flood problem intersections closed or barnacles set up to close if needed.. All the gas stations are extremely busy.. We are expected to get 4.5 inches of rain in less than two days which is a hell of a lot of rain in this desert community.. We are surrounded by mountains so run off is going to be a huge issue.. The folks in Soothern Cali are gong to really get hit hard.. I hope everyone hunkers down and ready for this one

    More Duplicate Repeaters

you could even write a query to search and remove duplicates on the database side so no effort would be needed. .. Better yet, you could even write a query to disallow duplicate entries, which is probably the best way to prevent duplicates from happening.. It appears that a lot of folks are simply making a new listing for minor changes they are making on their existing listing.. The best way to stop this is write a query on the database side to not allow it..

  31. I opened things up and reset the ribbon cable, no joy. I contacted buytwowayradios to see if they sell a replacement and they don’t. FYI, taking the radio apart is fairly easy. The key is to remove the antenna lock nut. Thanks for the suggestions. That radio will sit in the shelf as a donor if I ever need it.

  32. What year and model Jeep do you have? The 2018+ Wrangler and all current generation Gladiator have plastic corner caps between the hood and A pillar. You should have no less than 7 inches of metal in every direction. While there is metal under the plastic, it's recessed too far to help. So, you may just need to slide the mount closer to the front. Also, not all antennas are created equal. One of the best antennas I have used to date, is the MXTA26. I have had even better performance out of my Diamond NR-7900... though that is a very large/heavy antenna and may not be a good choice for a front/hood/lip mount.

  33. IMO, your best option is to not go alone and take a reliable source of communication like a Garmin InReach Sat-communicator, or a new iPhone with satellite connectivity.. Otherwise, unless you have someone waiting & listening for you, and you KNOW that your radio will reach them from wherever you may be (which is doubtful), you do not have a reliable means to call for help.. Or Pizza.. Source: I have done a bit of high-temperature, long-range hiking in the desert
