    2025 Resolutions

I was able to make a New Years resolution years ago that I've kept to this day. Never to make another NY resolution.

  2. Today i was in an area known as Eagle Mountain near Joshua Tree and heard a lady calling out to her dog, over the radio, who was helping them find the radio that they had lost in the desert.. apparently the dog could hear her calling him over the radio and led them to it, but it took about an hour.. and we got to listen to the entire show.

  3. 1) Make sure the volume is up 2) Turn down the squelch 3) Disable any Receive(RX) CTCSS/DTC/DPL tones or codes If, after all that, you still dont hear anything, send it back and tell them to send you one that works.

  4. well, I hope all you enablers are happy! I just ordered the 935G+, lol Honestly don't know why. One side of my brain kept saying "my 905G is perfectly fine", the other side was like "but it's newer and has a color display and everybody says it's great"

  5. Gone the way of the DoDo. Mine is the same. Nor do I. I guess none of this ever happened. May I suggest a salute to our brothers and sisters North of Line A and East of Line C by pressing the PTT on channel 19 at high noon using the Roger beep. into a dummy load of course.

  6. That's kinda clever, actually.

  8. Another place to put clamp on ferrite beads is the main cable going from your alternator to your battery. I would get occasional whine while transmitting until I put clamp on ferrite beads on that cable. I put one bead on each end. I also have clamp on beads on the hot and ground wires going to each radio. If that doesn't help, then make sure that your alternator has a good chassis ground. Newer vehicles can be temperamental about grounds with all of the computers. Make sure to use a good quality electrical tape and tape up the ferrite beads to help keep them from falling off. As @SteveShannon mentioned, always run the ground wire to a good chassis ground, especially on newer vehicles that have the Battery Management System. Doing so can help prevent problems.

    2025 Resolutions

It seems like mostly everyone makes and breaks their New Years Resolution. The funny thing about that is we do it without thinking. I realize over the years, I have post something that some may got my facts wrong or out of a Cracker Jax Box. And then other try to see things from my point and show where I may need to do my Homework. Speaking of Homework, if my favorite Teacher Friend and unofficial relative were alive Today, He would say Adam did homework, yea right and LA Dodgers will move back to Brooklyn and Oakland A's will go back to Philly. Seriously, I'll do better with commenting on particular subjects and do my best to K. I. S. A. T. T. P. Besides, sometimes I look what have posted and I kind of wonder what I was thinking or try to say.

  10. This is an emergency use case and not really practical but... Line of sight is a major factor with GMRS so that being said, would it be feasible to have a helium balloon with a light weight repeater payload attached to a fishing rod and line to reel it back in? You would have direct, unobstructed line of sight to the balloon repeater and it, being as high up as you have fishing line, would have line of sight extremely far. Maybe in the kit have a one time use sized helium container for portability and to be a bit more practical? Obviously this isn't something you'd go out and do every day, but it would be an extremely useful kit to have in a vehicle that may get stranded without cell service or signal to connect to a repeater. Even just using simplex, this could be a life saver, right?

  11. But I find no mention of it in any announcements on the FCC website. Damned bureaucrats.

    2025 Resolutions

Happy New Year, Adam! Don’t worry about it. You’re a decent man. I have no resolutions. Not that I do things right already, just that I’m not going to change.

  13. No apologies necessary. At least you figured it out. Ferrites on the power leads might help. Keep your ground wire short; go to a chassis ground nearest the transceiver. The positive line should run all the way back to the battery or fuse box near the battery.

  14. Well, apparently I am a liar, or senile (most likely) I put everything back together and set one of my HTs out where I could here it. Terrible noise! Tried it again after a short break and no noise. Clear as a bell. I then realized this time engine was off. So I was incorrect answering earlier about that. My apologies! So... I need to fix the engine noise. Researching that now. Thank you all!!

  15. I have a ground plane kit as it was previously mounted on the fiberglass roof. No Christmas lights.

  16. One thought; I also have my rig connected to the battery, but through a relay, so it won't accidentally be left on all night. (Does not have a 'turn off' timer setting!) Of course, the car has to be in at least the 'accessory' position to activate the relay, but even with the engine not running, there is circuitry activated. Anyway, I don't have any other suggestions, especially since this is one of those "it had been working fine" situations. Hopefully someone will offer a more viable solution. Good luck!

  17. If you tune to the nearest weather frequency and activate the monitor function do you hear signal? static? Perhaps squelch too high? Perhaps a tone is set? Perhaps you do not have sufficient antenna or bad location?

  18. I'm not going to upset myself by testing that with the Mex 600 repeater since I am the one that maintains it. Edited to add: None of the other users would get upset at me as long as I announce that I am testing before hand.

  19. That’s actually kind of clever, but annoying to everyone else, for possibly a $12 radio.

  20. Gotta wonder how many times you have to lose your radio to train a dog to find it.

  21. Then it is the charger (I suspect). Those little inexpensive chargers are very often terrible RF generators. Here’s a further confirmation: take the battery off of the radio and put it into the charger without the radio. Does it still create noise?

  22. Replace the Tone Squelch column with the frequency shown in the “input tone” on the MyGMRS page and change mode from NFM to wide and you should be good.

  23. It's an intriguing thought. From a technical standpoint, it should work. The issue would be in practical application How big a balloon would it take to lift a practical repeater? Batteries are heavy. How much use can you get out of a repeater before the battery went out? Probably the only way to know is to try it and see.

  24. They work reasonably well for that -- like any other 2 watt FRS radio. They're good for a mile or so, even inside a car.

  25. That link I posted has both pieces, for the antenna and the radio, for both genders combinations. But I’ll point out just once that most people don’t add an adapter to the very cheap antennas Baofeng attaches to their radios. They buy the BNC adapter so they can use a better quality antenna that comes with a BNC connector.

  26. All the BNC antennas I've ever seen use Male BNC connectors on the end, not Female types. The BNC adapter that screws into the radio uses a Female BNC connector as seen in the attached photos. Many of the Chinese radios use the same format as the more expensive Kenwood commercial radios, reverse polarity Male SMA to a standard female BNC.

  27. The other day a contractor was doing road work near me on a mountain road. They had the traffic down to one lane with guys holding signs at each end of the construction zone. I scanned GMRS while sitting and waiting, finding the flaggers on GMRS 16. The two men couldn't see each other or the work area and were MFing the foreman up one side and down the other. I scanned for the tone. When one flagger told the other that the last car in line was a red Honda I waited and noticed the last car was a Hyundai not a Honda. In a short break in their diatribe about the lead man I told them "The last car is a Hyundai, not Honda". Total nervous silence. As I passed the sign guy I gave him a wave with my handheld. He smiled and told the other guy what was going on.

He received a citation for failing to report an accident. And his insurance completely paid for my repairs and nearly a month long car rental.

  30. It’s not a base station… it’s a mobile.

  31. Wrong on both counts. I have several seats of RT Software and there are some very serious bugs in those seats which manipulate linked tables of DMR zones and groups that can completely corrupt a codeplug. Having said that I will continue using RT Systems software, avoiding those features which corrupt memory. As far as Chirp goes although it is free, it is no sketchier than any other software I’ve used and the developer is very responsive. I’ll continue using it as well. As far as triggering malware detection software I’ve seen false positives on several different CPS programs by various antivirus programs. The reason is heuristic detection. It works by watching for snippets of software that resemble malware. Programs intended to program radios match that pattern, even though they don’t have actual malware embedded. That has been discussed before; it’s not new.

    Chirp software site hacked

Never had any issues with CHIRP out of the dozens of radios i've programed.. In fact, personally i prefer CHIRP over RT Systems
