    Transmitting Power Limits

now if the antenna happens to be shaped like a Cat D9, it might do something to the hill... But other than that, no.

  3. Wow, Last week I ordered a Baoefeng DM 32UV from the Baofeng direct. When I ordered, I also entered their monthly giveaway contest. Tonight I just received an email from Baofeng, I won a DM 32UV.. that’s cool, now I’ll have two.

    "Illegal" radios

More like less than 0.0000000001% chance - and its not a belief, its a fact that anyone can look up on the FCC website, which lists every enforcement the FCC has done for the last ~15 years. NO - It does not appear that the FCC monitors GMRS YES - Disgruntled and very "sad" hams do report violators to the FCC, but the FCC does not appear to care based on the record of enforcements PROBABLY a lot of clubs monitoring, but see the points above because it doesn't matter

  6. I assumed that kind of setup (microwave or otherwise) was on a dedicated portion of the spectrum, outside GMRS, but I guess that does not have to be the case. Have I ever mentioned that this is a great forum?

    "Illegal" radios

This is just my opinion and by no means intended to be legal advice, but I have to agree with Randy and others with the same type of response. It seems that unless someone is committing some wild infraction, they aren't getting FCC attention. There are way too few enforcement agents and way too many people with radios for anything else. I used to think it mattered, but time and inaction have unequivocally proven otherwise. I have an XTL5000 that has the ability to run wideband digital encryption on UHF at 115 watts. From a technology standpoint, it exceeds every single minimum requirement established for type approval. If I where to program it to transmit 20w of output, only able to access the upper channels for high power simplex and repeater operation, narrow-band analog voice only, adhere to all of the other configuration requirements (including not transmitting on non-GMRS frequencies) and the FCC enforcement team knew I did it... I highly doubt anyone is going to care. Shoot... unless I were to get on the internet and start bragging about it, there isn't even any way for anyone to know. Signal interception sure isn't going the tell anyone anything. The bottom line is, I would never advocate or condone intentionally violating the rules... but damn dude... the FCC has way more important things to worry about then if you are using an iCom, Kenwood, Motorola, Yaesu, Harris, Baeofeng, TIDRadio, or any other radio. Ensure you don't cause harmful interference by using a quality radio and not acting like a Richard Cranium and im pretty confident if you roll the dice, you won't go to prison or get a $14,000 fine.

You would have a much better chance getting hit by lightning twice standing at the same place than the FCC knocking on your door with a GMRS violation.. And as Steve Shannon pointed out, there is no organized monitoring VM's for GMRS and i woiuld say there never will.

    Welcome!

Hello…a newbie here…former Marine Band VHF Channel 16 Commercial Fishing Vessel owner…first responder, scanner tracker for wildfires in SF Bay Area…Early warning, evac orders during 2015 Valley Fire, Tubbs Fire, Kincaid Fire and so on through 2018…pre Watch Duty app…with early HAM reporting and, scanner monitoring, twitter fire group reporting on VLATs from McClellan….etc With wildfires increasing in danger, I work with wildfire mitigation advisors, I am GMRS licensed now…will be taking HAM licensing test soon, assessing equipment buys, will be joining the local GMRS wildfire and emergency network that is already established since the wildfires almost a decade ago. Doing radio as data towers tend to shut down with loss of power…I have solar battery back up. i appreciate the help and info I have already received from others here and from recommended radio stores

That’s generally correct. From 95.335(b): b) Revoked or withdrawn certification. In the event that the FCC revokes or withdraws a grant of equipment certification for a type of Personal Radio Service transmitter, existing transmitters already in service may continue to be operated unless and until the FCC determines otherwise and gives Public Notice of that decision.

    Mini Oscilloscope

You can buy really nice used scopes at Ham swaps for good prices. I've seen plenty of dual channel 100MHz Techtronic scopes for sale for $100 to $200. In fact good used test gear is one of the things I always look out for. For a hobbyist it a great way to build up a test bench for a few $100's to a $1000 depending on what you want. You can easily end up with gear that would have cost several $10K's if purchased new at the time. At a minimum I would recommend a couple of variable DC power supplies (0 to 30 VDC at 1 to 2 amps), function generator (good to 5MHz), dual channel scope (50 MHz to 100 MHz) and a good bench top 4.5 digit multi-meter. After that you can look for more specialized gear like RF power meters, frequency counters, LCR meters, electronic loads, service monitors etc. depending on one's area of interest. Most of my more specialized stuff is stored away unless I'm using it. I have a dual channel HP frequency counter I have to do some work on (replace a noisy fan and install the optional 4GHz prescaler.) GPS disciplined 10MHz frequency standard, a used Rubidium atomic frequency standard, 200 MHz quad channel scope, 6.5 digit bench multi-meter, 20 MHz dual channel arbitrary digital waveform generator, 200 watt electronic load ...

The service is primarily designed for that use, but you are not restricted to that. It is a "General Mobile" service so the only limit is your imagination. You can use it for business as long as everyone is licensed. You can use it as part of a neighborhood comm backup in the case of an emergency. My HOA, for example just announced that channel 15 would be used if all else fails (seriously considering a repeater). Don't forget that it shares channels with FRS radios, so in a close group you can connect to a number of unlicensed knuckleheads. Welcome to GMRS!

Just key up and talk using normal words. Use your ID once every fifteen minutes if you talk that long and ID at the end of a conversation. That’s it.

  26. Many people use the Midland models that are fully water/dust proof and have the built-in intercom port/plugs in them. They also have a simple screen and simple controls (only 1 or 2 knobs) - which is useful when plowing through vegetation and animal habitats at unsafe speeds while drinking beer with the music blasting at full volume.

  27. Unless specifically called out a handheld is regulated the same as a portable or a mobile. Thus, while not practical, you could have a 50 watt handheld on some of the channels.

    "Illegal" radios

Radio specs are submitted by the manufacturer to the FCC and the FCC issues a certification. Look and see if the radio has been certified. A certification identifier should appear on a label attached to the radio. However, you’ll soon learn that as long as you make any attempt whatsoever at following the rules the FCC will never know or care.

    Test & Tune

We are happy to announce we will be having a monthly test & tune day. This will help provide a platform for members to test radios, antennas, locations and things one needs to better further their knowledge of their GMRS radio operations. We hope once a month isn't enough and test & tunes will become the GMRS get out and find out days/weekends. More to come. Contact me if anyone has a day they might be testing. WSHD977 - Bob

  32. Treadmills make great clothes hangers… A good way to get started is to pick up a Radioddity db20g and swap it to 2 meters and 70 cm. It’s inexpensive and versatile. Most people like them. It’s 20 watts but for those two bands that’s usually enough.

  35. Just a comment not meant to toll or support any points of view. I was brought into radio protocol via the military. The lessons are hard to break even after multiple boxes of crayons. It is almost pavlovian when I grab the radio. I have washed some of the terminology out but old habits die hard. You are welcome to ignore me or point out when I trip into military mode. P.S. I will not ask for a call sign
