@Tiercel That is exactly what I was talking about. When you "Uploaded from Radio" CHIRP created a file specific to that radio. That is the file you can download to that specific radio. You can copy channels and paste from any file but the file itself is radio specific. I can't even use a UV-5R GMRS file with a UV-5R8W.
@WSAA635 Welcome. GMRS is great for a lot of things. As far as random contacts, it's hit and miss depending on where you live and if your local repeater is linked. Where I live, there are lots of linked repeaters and therefore lots of people to talk to. Others aren't so lucky. Hopefully you will find a good group to talk to.
@nokones Nice setup. I have a friend I talk to on GMRS often who has a Jeep and an XTL5000. He has a channel mounted overhead and that is where he mounted the remote head. @OffRoaderX has one in his Jeep. Seems like Jeeps and XTL5000 kind of go together.
@Reclusiarch Concerning CHIRP, did you actually read from the Wouxun first? You can't just take the Baofeng file and upload it strait to the Wouxun. You have to download from the Wouxun and then copy/paste your channels from the Baofeng file to the Wouxun file. Then you can upload the Wouxun file to the Wouxun radio.
Not surprised. The way a lot of electronics are packaged (or packed) these days helps to protect them from physical damage and also from the elements. Unfortunately, it also sometimes protects them from us.
@Sshannon Is this the one? I'll have to keep that in mind. I do want to upgrade to a better antenna some day for mobile.
Another question about it: it appears to have that "fold over" feature. I've seen complaints(not necessarily that antenna) that it will sometimes fold down when getting up to speed. Have you experienced that? Thanks.
I'm not into model railroading but I took my kids to a couple of events some years ago and it is truly amazing. Can't spend the time and money on it myself but I hope you find plenty of others to work with.
@WRFP287 You are right, "Tone" leaves RX open. It sounds like a problem with the radio. I'm surprised that a Wouxon is doing that. Do you have another radio you can test with?
