  1. I'm not into model railroading but I took my kids to a couple of events some years ago and it is truly amazing. Can't spend the time and money on it myself but I hope you find plenty of others to work with.
  2. I have used both the Abbree 771 and the 771G with no noticeable difference between the two although you can see a slight difference in length.
  3. @WRFP287 You are right, "Tone" leaves RX open. It sounds like a problem with the radio. I'm surprised that a Wouxon is doing that. Do you have another radio you can test with?
  4. @Adamdaj probably half the people I talk to on the radio are using non-type certified radios. And guess what, I don't care.
  5. Merry Christmas!
  6. That's how I do it. I have different programs depending on which route/destination I'm going to be using.
  7. Just use a lightning arrestor like this one on the antenna feed line. If you had a tower, you would want to ground that.
  8. Try adding the frequencies you want to scan into channels using the programming software. It appears that this radio doesn't have a VFO mode.
  9. I think you should send it back. I doubt you will be able to do anything about it. This may not be an uncommon problem with cheap radios. I have a UV-5R GMRS with a row of pixels out right through the middle of the top line. The radio still works and I can still read the top line so I never sent it back. Now you've got me worried the whole thing may go out.
  10. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
  11. Anyone can hear your repeater. All they have to do is be on the same channel and use the same tone or no tone at all. Repeaters have to identify. If you transmit, you have to identify. As far as compliance goes, as long as you meet all the other requirements i.e. <= 50 watts, proper frequency, etc. you probably will not have an issue.
  12. I haven't used Zello in a while but I can confirm that I and many others have transmitted on @OffRoaderX repeater using Zello. It works quite well.
  13. As far as I can tell, for GMRS, those channels are only useful for radios like the Baofeng MP31 that can transmit at .5 watts on those channels. RF Output Power ≤2W (1-7&15-22&23-38Channels) /≤0.5W(8-14Channels)
  14. Be careful, last time I pulled the pin on something, it went BOOM!
  15. @WRUU653 That's a great punch line! I'll do a reaction when I get replenished.
  16. That is my understanding of it. What the amount of time is, I have no idea.
  17. That reminds me of a joke: "I've only made one mistake in my life, buying an eraser."
  18. @TheNevilleKid Better keep an eye on that Santa. Looks like he may try to walk away with one of your radios.
  19. @WRQI485 Welcome. Since you already have so much of the equipment, I don't see any reason not to go for it. I'm not a repeater expert but there are many people here who can help. Good luck to you.
  20. Mike, it sometimes takes some time for the database to be propagated to myGMRS.com. Just give it a little time and it will show up and you will be able to register.
  21. @roo_ster Welcome back to GMRS. I haven't been at it for all that long but have use it quite a bit since I started. CB doesn't have nearly as many offerings in HT as GMRS. I've used GMRS in the mountains around Cloudcroft NM and didn't have any problems. Although it is "line-of-sight" it isn't like a laser. My son was constantly out of sight around fingers and over hills and we never lost contact. The only problem I have had so far was trying to penetrate all the trees and houses in my neighborhood. That's were more power really helps. Bumping up from 4 watts to 7-8 watts made all the difference in the world.
  22. I don't go off-roading either but some of the ranch roads I've been on sure feel like it, especially going up and down the really steep places with loose rocks.
  23. You can also use the Baofeng software to back the factory settings until you figure out which one to select in CHIRP.
  24. That's true. I tend to not think about those since I can only afford cheep radios with stock antennas that suck.
  25. Just about any other antenna is better than the stock antenna. The Nagoya has a good reputation. Abbree are also good and much cheaper but they don't make a 701g yet. The do have a 701 however.
