  1. I guess I wasn't clear. GMRS HTs can have a removable antenna and most do. FRS HTs cannot have a removable antenna. I don't understand why a GMRS HT with a removable antenna would be excluded from having this feature.
  2. The non-removable antenna requirement is really weird. Not sure why they added that. @Sshannon do you know why the antenna requirement is there?
  3. I'll second what @WRHS218 said and add that just because the info on the page is "stale" doesn't mean the repeater isn't active. As far as access goes, if you are in Texas try out texasgmrs.net.
  4. In my neighborhood wattage does come into play. It is because of all the thick trees not because of distance. Better antennas on the HTs has also been a big help.
  5. Some of you guys like making me jealous.
  6. That is a good idea. I've done the same thing with fewer columns. Also, I have a few different programs and an excel sheet for each. I have one for when I'm in my home/work area, one for when I travel north, one for north west and two for west depending on exactly where I'm going. This helps to keep the file smaller and more manageable. If I ever take a different path, I'll set up a new one. A friend in my area does the same thing.
  7. There are many ham radios that can transmit on GMRS. It's just not legal to do so.
  8. @WRQC527 Did you mean repeater-builder.com ?
  9. Maybe use the Up/Down vote available in the Technical discussion forum.
  10. You captured it perfectly.
  11. @WRZI776 THAT is a cool call sign. I wish I had that one. 1776 baby!
  12. This is why you download from your radio and copy/paste into that file. CHIRP files are radio specific. I can't load my UV-5R GMRS file into my UV-5R8W and vice versa. I can however copy lines from one to the other and then load.
  13. @WRZF618 How far are you from the repeater? You will usually be able to receive from it further than you can transmit to it. Also, get someone to help you and take both radios outside at a distance of approximately front yard to back yard may be enough. Then see if you can communicate between the two. And like @Sshannon said, remove the receive tone until you have everything else working.
  14. @CyborgAlienWRYG738 Double check channel 31 in your file. Probably just a typo but 146.520 isn't GMRS.
  15. @WRZF693 I'm not familiar with the GM-15 but yes, offset is the difference in TX and RX. For GMRS it is always +5MHZ and in most if not all GMRS radios will already be set on the repeater channels. All you have to do is enter the appropriate tone for the repeater. Also, try to stay focused on one thread. I answered some of your questions on a different thread already.
  16. @WRZF618 Just to be clear, channels 1-22 are intended for simplex(point-to-point). Channels 23+ are duplex(using repeaters). In simplex, you don't have to use tones but you can if you want.
  17. Very nice.
  18. Josh has a video that helps to show the strong points of CHIRP.
  19. I don't believe that is at all accurate. It seems to me that most repeater owners have been quite generous in allowing us to use the expensive equipment that they paid for themselves.
  20. @WRZE489 welcome to the greater Houston area. I'm east of Houston.
  21. I connect to repeaters while they are available. After that, I take a nap until I get to my destination.
  22. Makes you wonder why they were VEs in the first place.
  23. @tcp2525 Just curious, which seller did you get it from?
  24. I agree with this. There are obviously differences between the two but they are both still two-way radio. And no reason why people can't enjoy one or the other or both. People are already doing that. I have many tools to work on the car, no reason we can't have many tools for two-way radio.
  25. I can't say for sure it's the reason but for a while there were some people that were harassing and spying on people with their drones. That may be what caused the change. Seems like there are always "some people" who have to ruin it for everyone else.
