  1. I had a Midland MXT500 and wasn't all that impressed with it. I ended up replacing it with a Wouxun KG-1000G.
  2. I only have 6 HT's. I know rookie numbers Let us know how you like the new radio.
  3. I m finding that radios, especially hand held, is a lot like AR rifles. They seem to multiply all on their own.
  4. A lot of different radios can have the MARS mod done to them through either a hardware modification or software hack. One is suppose to be a member of MARS or CAP to use an amateur radio outside of the amateur bands. The MARS mod on UHF radios just happens to allow transmission on GMRS channels. That does not mean that the modded radio is legal to use on GMRS channels because it isn't since it is not Part 95 certified. A lot of people do the MARS mod and don't worry about the radio not being Part 95 certified. And as long as one is not doing anything to draw attention to themselves will never get in trouble for it. Radioddity even has the TYT TH-9800 unlock steps on their website. https://www.radioddity.com/blogs/all/th-9800-unlock And yes the same procedure also works on the TH-7800 using the TH-9800 instructions and password. Use at your own discretion.
  5. This reminds me a lot of dealing with the ATF. Ask 10 ATF agents for an opinion and you will get 25 different opinions.
  6. I'm sure that Wouxun did fix that years ago. Otherwise they would not be selling them and/or we would still be hearing about the issue.
  7. I decided to look into this after seeing this topic brought up in a few threads. All I could find were articles and forum threads from 2016 and older. I would say that if there was an issue, it has been fixed since then. @WSAA635 keep us updated if you happen to have any issues with your radios please.
  8. The same software unlock for the TYT TH-9800 also works on the TYT TH-7800. I know it works on the 7800 the I bought about 4 months ago.
  9. I have seen some variance with this on HF radios myself. As SShannon said, most radios have a way to deal with this. You can use the clarifier or shift function on your radio.
  10. I have had good luck with connectors and adaptors from Max Gain Systems https://mgs4u.com
  11. I'll second putting an antenna in the center of the cab roof. I'll let you decide on mag mount versus drilling a hole for a NMO mount.
  12. Those SWR and power reading look good. The popping and scratching can definitely be from the power lines, especially if they are high power transmission lines. Or it could be obstructions between you and the repeater too. I would still double check all coax connectors just to make sure.

    QRM on Olycom 3

I have the Comet CA-500 MkII, with is the only one currently made by Comet. They aren't cheap. But if you plan on building your own antennas then they definitely are worth it. Myself and others have mentioned that drilling the mic hole bigger on the Baofeng hand mics does help. Just don't go too big. I also have a couple of Nagoya 771 dual band antennas for my UHF/VHF radios too. The Nagoya and Abbree antennas work better than the stock rubber ducks on my Baofeng and Explorer QRZ-1 (TYT UV-88). But I didn't notice any improvement over the stock rubber ducks on my Wouxun KG-935G and Icom IC-T10.

I didn't write the numbers down. I did test at both 462 and 467. The Abbree antennas were around 1.2 while the Nagoya was around 1.7 IIRC. All were still below 2.0 but the Abbree antennas were better. I also tested the factory Wouxun KG935G antenna and the SWR was around 2.0 on 462 and 467. The funny thing is that antenna works better on transmit and receive with the 935G than the Abbree or Nagoya antennas.

    QRM on Olycom 3

I have a Nagoya 771G and a couple of the Abbree copies. I tested all three on my Comet antenna analyzer yesterday. The Abbree antennas have a lower SWR than the Nagoya. Granted that is only a sample of three antennas.
  16. I would not sweat that SWR reading. Anything under 2.0 is fine. While fender mounts do work, getting the antenna up above the vehicle roof on a good ground plane is going to be better. Center of the roof is best unless you are dealing with a clearance issue. PS: don't test rubber duck antennas, They can be all over the place as far as SWR readings go but they still work just fine.
  17. The best mobile/base radio will not work well with subpar coax and/or subpar antenna. It's hard to beat LMR400 or equivalent coax for VHF/UHF frequencies.

And those two frequencies are also outside of the 70cm amateur band. The 70cm band is 420.000 MHz to 450.000 MHz.
  19. Quite a few of us in my local club have both licenses. And whenever any of us give the wrong call sign, the rest will give the guy trouble (in fun).
  20. You should be able to get into the repeater just fine if you can get a good base antenna up as high as you can go with good coax. 20 miles should not be a problem with a base antenna.
  21. I agree with that. Myself and others have occasionally gave the wrong call signs while on our GMRS repeater and while on our 2m and 70cm repeaters. It's going to happen now and then. Now if it is constant then there is an issue.
  22. I was thinking that is was a GMRS repeater since there is enough space between 70cm frequencies and GMRS channels. As far as conversations, I hear all kinds of topics on 2m, 70cm and GMRS. If I don't want to listen, I turn the dial to a different channel/frequency.
  23. It could be a GMRS repeater you are hearing too. Some will setup their GMRS repeaters to ID using CW (morse code). The repeater output frequency/channel for repeater channel 16 is the same as the simplex channel 16 at 462.575 MHz. One can normally hear GMRS repeater output traffic on simplex channels even with output tones set on the repeater. The band plan for the amateur 70cm band is from 420.000 MHz to 450.000 MHz. So a 70cm repeater should not bleed over into the GMRS channels. And you are correct that one cannot legally link amateur band repeater with a GMRS repeater. Please record the CW ID and post it so it can be decoded.
  24. A NanoVNA or antenna analyzer is what you need to see where the antenna is resonant. I know not everyone has those or can afford an antenna analyzer. First check the coax cable and all connectors/adaptors to make sure they are good. I would try a different antenna on your mag mount if you can. That will help eliminate the antenna or mag mount as the problem.

    operator error

I stand corrected and I need to pay closer attention to my radios. I went out and took a photo of my KG1000G Plus mic and it is labeled differently. I never paid attention to the labels when swapping the mics between the two radios. Either way it is button 6 that you use to change from frequency, channel number, or channel name.
