just as a reference,my midtown machine can be heard and talked through in Patchogue LI on the south shore. roughly 55 mi.
you're ~25mi from the north shore and ~35mi from the site you were hearing.

You are hearing a repeater output. they can not hear you unless you activate the repeater input on 467 with proper PL.DPL tone.

No. You cannot use that radio at all on GMRS. It doesn't matter how you use it.

A 75 ft run of 213 will lose about 3.3 db or just over half of your power; that's 2.4 watts max getting to the antenna. The connectors will lose a hair too. The loss will also effect the radio's hearing ability as well. This can be recovered with a gain antenna, but will eat into the gain it provides; i.e. a 6db gain antenna will be down to 3db.

Many type of antennas with Omni-directional and yagi beams being the most popular. Omni sends and receives in all directions while a yagi will concentrate in one direction. The yagi can get more coverage (gain) in one direction and loses coverage from other directions to make that happen (very basic terms here).

Unless something has changed, the profile pic option is very sensitive about file size, so you must crop and resize your image so that it is not over the file size limit before you attempt to upload.

We started with Times Microwave LMR400 We are now running LMR600. You can get 50feet of genuine tm LMR400 for less than a hundred bucks. Get it terminated with Type N connector and get an antenna with Type N connector, for the least hassle waterproof low loss connection. You may also like heat shrink tubing, some is adhesive lined for particular waterproof applications.

Yep, be a shame to blow a 50watt radio on cheap feedline or foul antenna array. You are on the right track, take your time

Logan5 reacted to berkinet in Do repeaters have to be part 95 accepted
Ok... No argument with your interpretation. However, note the word repeater is never mentioned. Rather, they use the word transmitter. So, would that, by extension, allow any Part 90 compliant transmitter to be used in Part 95 service? Like as a base or fixed station? And, aren’t handhelds also transmitters?

BTW, Inalso found this in the FCC’s response to comments on the (at the time) proposed GMRS rules changes:

Several commenters are concerned that the proposal to prohibit combination radios would prevent GMRS licensees from using surplus Part 90 equipment in GMRS. See, e.g., Comments of Jerry Scott Parham at 3. This is not our intent. We will continue to certify equipment that meets the respective technical standards for Part 90 (land mobile) and Part 95 (GMRS) in both services, if requested. However, we are amending the language in new section 95.1761© to clarify the requirement in old section 95.655(a) that Part 95 GMRS radios will not be certified if they are equipped with the capabilities to operate in services that do not require equipment certification, such as the Amateur Radio Service.

Best bang for the buck* on coax for a VHF or UHF base station is Times Microwave LMR-400. ...just don't use it for a repeater. (reasons discussed elsewhere on this site)

Also, watch out for fake Chinese LMR-400 "Type" coax, as some of it is sub-standard, or just re-badged RG-8u. If it isn't from Times Microwave, then it isn't true LMR cable, which is a registered trademark.

For repeater use, you really need to use Commscope AVA5-50 or larger, depending on length. (NOTE: This is the new part number for what we all call 7/8" Heliax, also a trademark.)  If you want to go cheap, and still get good results, check out the less costly RFS Cellflex LCF78-50JA. This is a 7/8" line very similar to "Heliax", but not... kind of like grocery store facial tissues are very similar to "Kleenex", but not.

*NOTE: The above is my personal professional opinion.  The views and opinions of others may vary.

TV coax is not suitable for 2 way radio. a directional antenna can make long distance communications possible even with low power input. Yes, you will turn the antenna by hand or with a relativity inexpensive rotor. depending on the Yagi, you will still have local service on the rear and side lobes. but your forward lobe can be several times further than an Omni antenna even with low power.

Sweet thanks. I guess for now I'll just do the RG8/213 for now. My feed line will be less than 100'. I'll do a little more research on antennas. Just wish I had more operators up here to talk with on my mtx105. I know I don't have much to work with this as far as power and reach. If anyone knows of Maine operators please let them or me know. Thanks

Absolutely not. GMRS like any other radio requires 50 ohm impedance, the which RG6 is not. The three most important requirements for any system are:
    1. height
    2. antenna
    3. feedline (coax, 50 ohms)

Higher power seldom improves a less than ideal situation. antenna Height, and quality feedline are far more important. Once communication is established it is common courtesy to reduce power output to a level sufficient to maintain communications. a 5 watt radio at 50' is generally more effective than a 50 watt radio at 5'.

Is it legal? NO. Has anyone ever been prosecuted? Probably not. My own thought is use of a non certified radio on GMRS is probably not a primary offense. That is, the FCC is extremely unlikely to come after you for this reason alone. In fact, if the radio is operating properly there’s is no way anyone could tell it was not certified just by monitoring it. However, if the FCC had other reasons to go after you, like spurious transmissions, too much power, being a nuisance or other observable violations. Then, they would probably add a charge for use of a non-certified radio to whatever else they were pursuing.

That is 100% my personal view and does not reflect this site or, possibly, even my view tomorrow.

Logan5 got a reaction from WRWJ387 in how do I get setup on an open repeater
Welcome to the myGMRS forum SAM. Sorry it took so long to reply, but with the Holiday and all. Ok when you set up a new radio, you will use it's manual to get intouch with it's basic workings first. Some radios allow direct programing, others only allow for USB programing, most everything else is str8 forward from there. let's say you set up RX  on 462.600mhz, in your radio menu you will find an option that allows you to set the repeater offset. +,- or none. under this menu option you will select +5,000mhz this will put your TX or transmit on 467.600,. there are other options in the menu system of your radio that allow you to set other varibles  as well, one most critical to repeater usage is the PL tone, or CTCSS and to some degree DCS. in the this case of CTCSS let's say the repeater has an input tone of 167.9 you would need to set your TX CTCSS to 167.9 to activate the repeater. If you chose to lock out other simplex chatter on 462.600, you would also set your RX CTCSS to 167.9 this will filter out most others conversations. But is not to be confused with a private conversation., many bubble pak radios boast the CTCSS and DCS as privacy codes and they are not. With regard to chosing a radio, There are many options, Cheap Chinese Radios (CCR's) are not Part95 certified, although they will work on GMRS, They are not techincally compliant. Some CCR's also get hot quickly and degrade in transmit quality when hot. also to remain compliant as well as courtsey to the repeater owner, you should always announce your call sign and refrains from interupting an already on going conversation. I sugest turning off noise makers like beep tone and the like. is not nessary and get's old fast. If a conversation with your family member can be made via simplex, keep it on simplex, save the repeater usage for those that need it. There is much more to learn and you will in time, but this should be enough to get you started. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate, we are here to help.   Jim...

Just received a GMRS-V1 and am playing around in Chirp. Can you add into memory a repeater pair with tone? It appears that you cannot and must setup tone with the standard Repeater Channel. This works well for one repeater on a freq, but when traveling it would be nice to create a memory entry with the correct tone for other repeaters on the same freq.
