Logan5 reacted to PastorGary in Transmitting from a "fixed station" on 467 main channels.
The issue is that if simplex fixed to fixed operation takes place on a 467 main with 15 watts or less transmitter power (not ERP) and the simplex user happens to choose an active repeater input code, a repeater could be triggered each time the simplex communications on the 467 main take place.

IF anyone wishes to use 467 mains for simplex fixed op's, repeater activation code research should be done locally to verify that no repeater activation will take place.

This FCC rule stipulation may turn out to be a problem, especially in large metro areas, and may have been an unfortunate protocol to adopt.

Another example, I listed mine and a repeater owner contacted me the next day letting me know I'm on the same pair and tone as him, so I changed tone and if it gets bad I'll change frequency.

Had his repeater been listed I wouldn't have had to go through all of that, so it is very helpful as far as frequency coordination goes.

Private Members-Only systems are sometimes listed to A) try to attract new members or B ) advertise the repeater exists to help with frequency coordination. If someone checks this site to see what frequencies may be open, they'll see the listing even if it's a private system.

Please check your callsign closely. Your callsign is actually WRAI450. That's 4 letters and 3 numbers, the 4th letter is the letter "I".

There's an extensive thread over on radioreference.com in the FRS/GMRS section that contains information on lots of radios that are Part 95 type accepted. Check out this section of their forum: https://forums.radioreference.com/gmrs-frs/

And, some of the previous threads here have some of the same information.

    1. No. GMRS is a personal radio service now. Business use was discontinued several decades ago however there are still a few legacy licenses for businesses that were granted before the change. They must renew to retain their use of the GMRS frequencies. The personal radio service rules were recently updated to clarify all of this. Check out FCC.gov and search on Part 95.

    2. No. See #1.

    3. No longer relevant.

Depending on the model of the Baofengs, they are or are not certified for use in various radio bands by the FCC. Most of them really only qualify for licensed amateur radio operator use.

You should contact a local two-way radio shop for guidance and equipment. They are familiar with your area and can best advise you on licensing, etc.

Going to use GMRS this year for our comms on our winter trip in the southwest. A few things left to do, and we are on our way. Just got my USA GMRS licence, all done online using the well-designed FCC websites, $70 for ten years, callsign issued in less than two working days. Good service! Glad to finally be able to join myGMRS.com  -  Arizona, here we come!

Truthfully, any fractional wattage is irrelevant in terms of performance. Only truly anal retentive types are micro-focused on such trivia.

I’m new to the forum and am curious to know if there are any other users in the greater Charlotte, NC metro area. I live about 35 miles southeast of downtown Charlotte, near the NC/SC line and US–601. I’ve had my GMRS license for a bit, but have yet to actually talk to anyone. I have a Wouxun UV-3D handheld and 2 Motorola CDM–1550 UHF mobiles that came without power cables or microphones (what did I really expect for that price on eBay, LOL). I’m just wondering if there is any local activity. I’ve been a licensed ham for 21 years and I know there is quite a bit of local VHF usage there. Thanks in advance and have a great day!

    Logan,
The radio in question BTech GMRS V1 is already preprogrammed and certified for GMRS only in transmit you do not need software nor programming cable  the user only needs to know is how to manually change the CTCSS DCS tones which I do not without having one in my hands.I know this is a old thread but I just was reading through the comments and saw yours...William

what you need is an elevated outdoor antenna at each site. 16 miles is easy over flat topography with each site using an elevate antenna.  you will get more for your money upgrading your A.S.S. than a higher power radio.

Logan5 reacted to SteveC7010 in Travel Tones, PL/DPL differences
    Wayne,

The "travel tone" is simply an designated TPL (or PL if you will) tone that is accepted as a universal tone to access repeaters by travelers especially on Channel 20R which is the commonly accepted assistance or emergency calling channel. LIke any other PL, only one can be used at a time so there is no overlay.

    The travel tone is 141.3.

Just a word of caution... Not everyone in the GMRS world follows this plan, but most do.

Logan5 reacted to SteveC7010 in New Radios with higher power limits
My expectation is that we won't see any new radios right away. There's a time lag to these things. They need to modify their designs, tool up the factories, and procure parts before they can build them. They also need to go through the FCC Type Acceptance procedure. Then they need to build then, ship them, and get them into stores for retail sales and warehouses for internet sales.

My best guess is that we might see something in time for Christmas, probably repackaged existing FRS/GMRS radios with new advertising claims, etc. as FRS only. Somebody might surprise us with new products by then, but I think we'd see those in the spring of 2018.

I don't think we'll see a ground swell of 5 watt GMRS portables in the stores for quite a while.
