I don't believe so, and even if they were there is a rule about altering internal components.

I might add, a long hang time makes it easier for even a novice repeater jammer to find your tone. We have had some illegal commercial use and used this as well as other means to investigate who it was. However we have not encountered any malicious Jamming.

If a repeater has only one PL tone designate, the programmer could chose to set it to 141.3, If a repeater has multipliable tone capacity then the programmer could chose to designate one of those tones to 141.3, the travel tone designation, is a suggestion not a rule.

Close. To use your analogy, and limit it to omni-directional antennas, a low gain antenna, say a 0db 1/4 wave, is like the sprayer in the middle of your yard the kids run through. Water sprays a short distance in every direction, including up, within a 180° hemisphere. A gain antenna is more like a quality lawn sprinkler head. The water only goes out sideways, not up. So, the same amount of water covers a larger circle. (BTW, unlike radio waves, water that goes up will, at least according to Isaac Newton, come back down. So, the analogy is imperfect. You have to imagine that the water going up from the sprayer evaporates before it can drop back to the lawn.)

Now, to extend the analogy, imagine you ditch the sprinkler and sprayer and get a nozzle. Now you have a strong stream of water in one direction only. So, even though only one person will get wet, they will be drenched. And, that is a directional antenna.

Pure and simple, the power out put from the radio is constant. All the antenna design does is focus the direction, including up or down, that the radio energy is radiated. Less energy radiated towards the sky means more radiated sideways... hopefully to another antenna.

    Welcome to the new forums!

Unfortunately, over the last year or so we've had serious problems with our previous board software (phpBB and vBulletin), so I did some shopping around and decided that Invision Power Board is the way to go. Between vBulletin and this new software, I've had to lay out over $400, so I didn't make the decision lightly.

While it's possible to migrate the posts from the previous software, I decided it wasn't worth the effort. I prefer having a clean platform and I will be tying the forum software to your main user accounts, so you no longer need two accounts for the site. This extra step will take some time for me to implement, so I'm going to lock down user registrations so we don't have duplicate accounts everywhere. Keep a look out for an update in the near future!

So without further ado, welcome to the new forums! I hope this will be our last migration for many years to come, and donations to help offset the software licenses would be very much appreciated.

FRS was originally designed for "Family" use, and if I recall up till the last rules change, business operations weren't allowed on FRS/GMRS frequencies. However since this rule, as well as the licensing rules, were ignored, the FCC removed the rules. This is why it is now legal to TX simplex on the repeater output frequencies as long as you don't TX over 2 watts and your radios antenna isn't removable. Businesses can also use the frequencies, which unfortunately leads to the "Hey your bothering my business with your GMRS crap, get off the channel or I'll _____" conversation. I've had it a few times in NJ, mostly with flaggers who think I am on their frequency when I'm not. I even received a letter from a boat repairs place claiming my repeater was causing disruption to their operations channel of 462.6750 and if I refuse to use a different channel they would seek legal action. I just told them to go screw themselves because no sole user has that type of control over the frequency. So while it isn't illegal as per fcc rules, it does become a headache and for the unknowing user, they may think that businesses have priority over all other users on the channel.

I like the battery power supply option, You would purchase a nice deep cycle battery and an appropriate low noise charger for said battery. then connect your gear to the battery via a fused circuit. Your power will generally be 13.8v and during grid power fail, you will still have 12.5 to 13v and several hours of stand by power. In my case, I have a 110AH lead acid battery under my bench and 12v power outlets at my work space. I also have several 12v powered tools and a ventilation fan. I also have a 9" LED TV that only uses 5.5 watts. Great post storm set up, keeps communications going for several hours. Our repeater has a 55 AH AGM battery and operates for up to a day of lite to moderate use. clean quite power supplies like Astron can cost several hundred, this set is comparable in price.

    Welcome to MyGMRS

To start out with, The Amps rating on the radio should always be lower than that of the power supply. The Kenwood 880H (nice choice as this is the only radio I run BTW) uses 12.8Amps when transmitting on high power. Using a 15 amp or higher power supply that delivers 12.5-13.5 volts should be fine. I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EWG6YT8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this power supply for the house "base" radio. I do get a slight hum when the fan turns on, but for the most part it works without an issue. The whine should go away if I use a choke on the power wires but I was too lazy to order them.

I do not know much about Ed Fong antennas to really give you much advice on them. They seem to be custom home built antennas, which could be hit or miss. There are commercially available antennas for the 460-470 mhz range that may work better. I originally used a diamond 200U with good results, Now I use a comet 712EFC which has higher gain and is working great. One thing to note about mounting however. Keep in mind the primary use of a fire escape. You will need to run your feedline and mount the antenna in a way that would not interfere with an emergency evacuation should it ever occur. You would not believe how many times I've seen ham radio operators and CB'rs just throw the feedline across the fire escape completely blocking it should people need to evacuate. Or they mount Yagi antennas (a directional antenna) that block the escape. When I talk to some of them it seems their concern was that they could escape and the hell with the rest. They just don't realize they could be charged if someone is hurt or killed should a fire break out. So be sure to take great care with that for everyones safety!

Get a pole, a house bracket, good quality antenna and feedline. the pole and house bracket cost less than $30 and provides a good place to mount a quality antenna. messing with aluminum gutter work will create all kinds of problems, some already mentioned above. For best results use two poles and a pole to pole bracket and do your best to get the antenna at least 10' above your roofs ridge line. There are lot's of options for mounting a pole to your home, a tilting base is also helpful.

Of ourse I don’t. But, that was not my point. I do not think a simple business relationship gives someone the right to engage their customers in a religious discussion. BTW, I would feel the same even if I held the same religious views as them, which, for all you know, I might.

You are asking a lot for 150 bucks, quality components and engineering cost money. The small profit margin would require every GMRS license holder in the US to purchase several 150 dollar radios just to recover the engineering costs let alone the rest of the expense of bringing a product to market. Its simple economics and GMRS is to little of a market share to invest in.

Circular polarization does work to make RF cut through difficult areas. I have not seen any commercially made circularly polarized antennas for UHF, but I can say that almost EVERY radio station on the VHF broadcast band (FM 88-108MHz) uses a cycloid, or other type of circularly polarized antenna system.  The science is well proven for transmitting.  The question would be: Can they receive as well?

The CS800 is a single-band UHF analog/DMR mobile radio with 45 watts on high power.
    The CS800D is a dual-band V/U analog/DMR mobile version, with 55 watts VHF, 45 watts UHF.

The CS800D is available on a close-out sale for $199 and I just received one last week. After programming it will replace the CS800 currently in my car. The only reason for the fire-sale is that the newest version is now Part 90 certified which will allow CS to market in the commercial arena. They are wanting to clear out their existing inventory before the new versions arrive next month.

The CS800/D now supports up to 10,000 channels and up to 160,000 private contacts.

They also had the new BFD (Big Freaking Display) on sale during Hamvention for $199 and I snapped one of them up immediately! As you can see, the BFD truly lives up to it's name. Compare the BFD to the tiny amber display on the small front panel in the picture below bottom of the center console stack near the mic cables. The radio near the top is the control head for a TYT-7800 V/U analog for ham use.

In the old days, almost all transmitters had pi-network outputs, and would transmit into anything without going into fold-back or shut down.  We would simply tune cavities by transmitting through them into a load.  For a set of pass cavities, transmit on the desired frequency, and tune the cans for maximum power throughput.  For reject cavities, transmit on the unwanted frequency, and tune for greatest null.

You can't really do that with modern transmitters, as they will just shut down.

To the OP on this topic. Maybe you did, or maybe you didn't like the responses to your question. But, since two people took the time to give you some useful links and information to help answer your question. I would think some recognition on your part might have been nice.

For all I know, you may never have even bothered to read the responses, in which case we just wasted our time. I suspect the responses weren't horribly inaccurate, since 4 people seem to have liked them. Maybe you wanted better answers, or just didn't find the responses useful, in which case you could at least provide a little feedback so as to the issue.

But, if users here are going to ask people to take their time to try and help them, then at an absolute minimum, they should be prepared to acknowledge the effort.

Discussions will be ongoing for the next few monthly BoD meetings. Hopefully my motion will be passed and then we can present the proposal to the general membership.
