Perhaps you could get Dan to read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" beacause he's not doing anybody any favors, especially himself, with emails like that.

So I finally got around to programming my controller today, and it went off without a hitch. I set it up for Morse ID and an EOT tone (Morse "K"). Most GMRS repeaters I've heard have nothing except a squelch tail, but that's not how I want to do mine.
The RF chores will be handled by a pair of Kenwood TK-805Ds.

They work fine with GMRS repeaters. If they are Part 95 approved (most Kenwoods, a few Motorolas, maybe some others) they are legal. If they are just Part 90 approved, FCC has stated that they are aware that folks are using them on GMRS.
Fact is, a lot of the repeaters are built from old Part 90 radios.
    Clear as mud?

The GMRS-V1 has both, so you will be good to go there.

I am new as well. I got my license for the same reason, it is easier to onboard my family. Personally, I enjoy scanning and listening. However, my family prefers to keep it on our shared DCS channel for chatting with each other.

It is highly likely that those radios are actually 20KHz bandwidth, not 25. You'd have to be looking at radios well over 30 years old to see 25 KHz bandwidth. If the FCC Type Acceptance shows an emission code that is 16Kxxxxxx, it is 20KHz. Given the fuzzy response from the FCC, you may consider legacy 20KHz radios to be very usable in GMRS. I do.

The narrowbanding effort that culminated on the the deadline of 1/1/13 brought most of Part 90 down to 12.5KHz, forcing a lot of agencies to remove their older 20KHz only radios from service which is why you see so many of them for sale on auction sites.

Just to add to what RCM mentioned - GMRS was not involved in the FCC Part 90 rebanding plan from a few years ago because it is a Part 95 service - not Part 90.

Therefore 'wideband' operations on the MAIN channels listed in your post, is the normal operating mode for most licensed GMRS operators and for most repeater operations.

Hello everyone. Been lurking here for a couple of weeks before registering. I recently received my GMRS license. Was surprised to have it issued within a day of submitting everything online. I've been a licensed ham since 2001 as well. I have a family that doesn't mind using a radio but asking they are not interested in getting a ham license. Figured we could use GMRS and have better results than the cheap FRS radios we have used in the past. Plus it gives me another radio to play with.
I'm now off to post a question in the technical section. Thanks for having me.

RCM got a reaction from Hans in Hypothetical question of UHF antenna bandwidth.
It's not difficult to find an antenna that covers 440-470 with a reasonable swr. I just got a dual band base vhf/uhf antenna that is a half wave on 2M and collinear 5/8 waves on uhf, that covers 440-470 at well under 2:1 swr.

And btw, it doesn't necessarily violate FCC regs to have a rig that covers 70cm and GMRS. It can't be frequency agile, but there are no rules I am aware of that prohibit programming ham radio frequencies into a radio that meets type classification for GMRS.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can do the MARS/CAP mod on your FT-857 and use it on GMRS!

I did not realign it. I just programmed several local ham UHF repeaters into it. I can easily reach repeaters, signal quality seems to be good. I do not have equipment to see if there is some excessive distortion or any other problem with the signal.  One day I might check it with the power meter.

Just a note on channel capacity with the M1225 series. They were touted as having a capability for 20 or 24 channels. You could squeeze in 24 channels if you deleted certain features/functions on the radio. It's been too long, but I seem to recall that you would lose simple things like the ability to change the display backlight from amber to green, certain button functions, etc.

The reason that it sticks out in my mind, was that I do remember seeing problems as you would approach 20 channels and try to do things like priority scanning. It seems they were pushing the edge of the radio's capabilities to get to 20 + channels, especially if you had Alpha tags on each channel - and used all the characters on the display.

On a side note, I used to mess around with LTR trunking systems on the 1225 series before they came out with the LS models (and later on the PM400) - and a company named Scholer-Johnson made a plug in option board that would allow all types of features  - including the ability to do multiple zones of 16 (possibly more?) channels. The software wasn't user friendly - I remember that you did NOT want to Read radios with the option board - just Write properly defined setups. I stumbled across the 3.5" floppies with the install files the other day,  probably what brought this to mind.

You'll have to find a copy of Motorola RSS for M1225 (not terribly hard to do) but that's definitely not the hard part. RSS doesn't run on modern hardware; for the MT2000 I used Win95's DOS mode on a Pentium without issues. I'm not sure how the M1225 software runs on later computers. Virtualization may be an option but RSS needs Microsoft DOS to work. A 16550-based serial port is highly preferred, I don't know how well the USB ones work; computers of the right vintage for RSS usually have onboard 16550 serial.

You can find a CDM1250 or CDM1550 for around the same price -- they're newer, have displays, will cover both GMRS and 70cm, and a larger channel capacity.

I may be incorrectly assuming that this is in response to the kerfluffle that occured previously in the post.  I would like to say that I'm very sorry.  I suppose I should keep in mind that not everyone appreciates or understands my humor.  It was honestly an attempt at a joke, and while I will admit, I was definitely being snarky, I truly didn't intend to ruffle anyone's feathers.  I should have been more respectful and appreciative of Steve7010's advice, and I should not have been such a smarta$$.  So when he suggested I was being rude, I didn't respond very well to that either.  I think everyone is "chilled out" now, and Pastor Gary was kind enough to step in and get us back to the discussion.  This occurred over a week ago, so I'm not sure why it's being revived here now, but I thought I would at least make an attempt to apologize here now, so that we can continue with the discussion and solve the mystery of programming the M1225.

According to data sheet, TK-880 Type 1 is aligned for 450-490MHz, Type 2 is for 485-512MHz, Type 3 is 400-430MHz. I have TK-880H-1 v2.0, and there are no problems programming ham bands into it.
