  1. I have set up a mobile antenna at the tower site. Set the radio to 25 watts on both sides. I have gone to the trouble of setting up a separate TX & RX frequencies on the UHF crossband side. Also have split tones. I has to change frequencies several times because of interference. The interference traced down my PL tone and was broadcasting a strong signal. I was using split tones then also. So they didn't cause interference to the actual repeater. OK with that said, I am getting a choppy signal from the crossband radio to my portable. Doesn't happen all the time. I think it is the signal quality of the station transmitting to the actual repeater. I am thinking a better antenna would help or move the antenna from the building to the tower at some higher level, or is there a setting in the crossband radio I can set or adjust? Thanks KI5GXD WRCW870
  2. I have read the post from 2016. Didn't provide much more that I already know. However I did lean a new term "Shot Gun". I would like to link my GMRS repeater to the MWC-550 repeater in OKC. Google maps says 69.995 miles. The OKC repeater is on platform at 1000 ft on KFOR TV's broadcast tower. I had one of my members in OKC yesterday. I parked out on the hill with my 40 watt mobile and talked to him just fine. His audio was really clear, said mine had static but understandable. Guess that is my question. The link radio I use. I was thinking of a Motorola 100 watt or better radio with the power set to 50 watts. Will doing this get me more duty cycle? Does the group have any suggestions on a link radio? Things to do to the radio to make it hold up better in this application? The Arcom RC210 will control the RF link and the AllStar node with lots of options. Yes the owner of MWC-550 WQJX337 has given me permission to RF link with his repeater Also another is antenna separation. The repeater antenna is at 200 ft.. The yagi will be at 25 to 30 ft with a 12.25db gain pointed toward the OKC repeater. I am guessing the yagi will direct most of the RF energy down range away from my repeater. This should mitigate most of the interference. Thanks WRCW870
  3. Sorry, Did I miss something. EIRP? Yes I know what this means. I was told it was 50 watts out of you radio. That was the power limit. No limit on antenna height and no limit on EIRP on GMRS Channels 15-22. My repeater's EIRP is a little over 350 watts by calculators I found online. I know the FRS stuff is non-removable antennas and they do have a EIRP limit. Channels 8-14. WRCW870
  4. From my research. The Arcom RC210 controller is the one I have found the most information on. Found lots on Radio Reference web forums. We have a local ham repeater that is set up in this manner. One tone is local and the other connects to 5 other repeaters in this half of the state. I will contact Arcom next week for more information. Also Rich, When I change the operating mode from "Repeater" to "Base Mode" will that change the ability to use the current 16 operating tones? Should get the hardware today. Will contact the tower operator next week to start work on getting internet to the controller. Thanks WRCW870 Have been trying to contact the operator of the 550 machine in OKC to talk to him about linking possibilities. The hardware shows "sold out". When do you beleave more will be available? Rich Thank you for your web site and the knowledge your forum members provide. THANK YOU!
  5. I have jumped off into this. The tower operator that I have my repeater on told me $10 per month for a low volume internet connection. I have contacted MYGMRS.com and ordered the linking kit from this site. Will need to get out the programming software for my ICOM FR-4000 and see if I can figure it out. OK, Here is my question. This is what I would like to do. I would like to link one tone (ctcss or dcs) to another repeater or network. The research I have done says I need a multi port repeater controller. What type or model would I need? What is the best and then what is the best bang for the buck? Any other information you would feel I need to know please provide. Thanks WRCW870
  6. Over kill on the coax? nonsense. The perfect size. If you had used 1 5/8 that may have been a little over the top. But still acceptable. Gain is your friend. We want all the gain we can get...
  7. How about a repeater on the water tower or inside the compound? Who own the water tower? Doesn't hurt to ask? WRCW870
  8. I wish you were closer. I want the DB420..... WRCW870
  9. I have a couple of questions. What would be the difference between a community repeater and a standard part 90 repeater? What would be the licensing differnece? Does anyone know what the cost to license a part 90 repeater? Thanks KI5GXD WRCW870
  10. I have an extra radio that is capable of crossband repeat. Do I need to get the repeater operators permission to set up a crossband link to extend coverage into my town? Thanks KI5GXD WRCW870
  11. I went over to where my base station is set up. Turned on my radios and started scanning as I had a few minutes to burn. Started hearing some unusual traffic on channel 6. The station was giving out what I thought was really personal information. I was hearing: peoples names, dates of birth, health information, number of family members, car make and model with tag numbers. I listened for a little bit. Scanned for the CTCSS or DCS tone. There was no tone found. Contacted my local police department. Took my radio down to the PD and the Officer was also concerned about this type of information being transmitted over an open channel. They began to investigate this. I decided to key up with my call sign and try to contact the operators and get there purpose and company name. It turned out to the the local food bank. They were IDing people to receive food. I advised the PD I was going down to talk to them about this. They said they were sending an officer as well. I just told them that people as far away as 10 miles could here this information and that I was concerned about this type of information being sent over an open channel. They seemed a little confused on how I was listening to them. They stopped using the radios and went to cell phones. Just thought I would share this story. I guess that makes me the radio police or at least concerned enough to reach out. Thanks for reading. WRCW870
  12. Applied for a license for his wife. Her record is clear. Have a call sign that both can use. He has a radio to keep track of him. Thanks for the useful input. WRCW870
  13. berkinet: I found that page also in my google searching. Thanks WRCW870
  14. Radioguy7268: Thanks. That is a great solution. I get cases of can't see the forest for tree's syndrome. Thanks WRCW870
  15. I have an employee that has a felony on this record. The GMRS license asks if you have ever been convicted of a felony. He keeps getting his phone shut off and need to get him a radio for communications for work purposes. Has anyone been through the process? Does anyone have an example letter? How long does this process take? Any information would be helpful. Thanks WRCW870
  16. This is the response I received from the ARRL: First, I am sorry you are experiencing this kind of situation. However, the repeater owner may make rules that are more strict than the FCC's requirements. Nothing entitles any licensee to use any specific repeater simply because it is on the air. The trustee/owner is responsible for ensuring it operates with the established rules. It sounds as you have tried to "jump through the hoops" but for whatever reason this particular individual wishes to be less than friendly... This isn't something that would be actionable by the FCC. The best advice I can offer is for you to move on to another repeater. I would suggest you ask other amateurs if there is another Skywarn net/repeater - I don't know that particulars on how it operates in your area. I am sorry again that you have had this type of experience. Don't let it sour you on enjoying the hobby. 73 Dan Henderson, N1ND Regulatory Information Manager ARRL - the national association for Amateur Radio Phone: 860-594-0236
  17. Quartwave: I have my own GMRS repeater here in my town. That is why this hasn't bothered me that much. I don't need his repeater at all. I use my repeater for business. personal, and just chatting. I have joined the Elk City group. I have talked to there members many many times with no problems. Just seen I have a nack for finding the Aho*les in the world. Thanks everyone for the replies and information.
  18. Well as Paul Harvey would say, We had a meeting of the Skywarn group. David said that he wasn't to concern about us remembering every bodies call signs all at once. He said he wanting us to get our call sign out and correct. David and Bill with to Woodward to repair one of the linked repeaters. It was the end of the day and I was curious of how they did? So I had a brain fart and couldn't remember Davids call sign. So I called out "KI5GXD calling David" before the repeater even keyed down Bryan (the repeater owner)(which does not even participate in the group) proceed to chew a hole over the air. I told him I had only had my license for 2 weeks. He said he didn't care(he used other words). This was incorrect. However it could have been handled in several different ways. Including a phone call off air. That is the rest of the story..... KI5GXD WRCW870
  19. This is a general question about Ham radio repeaters. I received my ham licence a few months ago. My second week of having my license. I has on the Skywarn repeater that the group I have been meeting with operates. I guess I failed to ID to the repeater owner's satisfaction. He proceeded to get on the repeater and chew me a new ass. I tried to explain that I was new to the craft he didn't seem to give a ShXt. This has left a sour taste in my mouth in regards to HAM in general. My wife heard the conversation and was just dumbfounded that some would say that stuff. I have not talked on that repeater since. Plan to remove it from my radios. Well hear is my question. Can HAM radio repeater be "Closed" or do they have to be "Open"? IE Can a group require member ship or a fee to use there HAM repeater? One of the new Hams I have met received a letter advising him that he would need to pay membership after talking on the repeater that the person he was talking to owns. I don't know anything about HAM radio. Thanks WRCW870 Gi5GXD
  20. Just trying to talk to them? Spill on Isle 3. Truck waiting at back door. Price check in pet supplies. ect.
  21. They are so fun to screw with. Now that's entertainment.
  22. That is cool. Thanks for the information. KI5GXD WRCW870
  23. It is on a regular basis. Signal strongest in Elk City OK.
  24. I have a AT-5888UV that has cross band repeater function. I was wanting to be a part of a net last night. My HT wasn't receiving the signal. I am using a high number DCS tone. and a low power setting on both the mobile and HT. Also What are good channels on UHF to use on this application? Thanks KI5GXD
  25. I have been monitoring all the channels and a few high power inherent channels. I am getting a transmission that sounds like a string of DTMF tones. Any ideas what that is? Thanks WRCW870 KI5GXD
