  1. Is it illegal to operate a repeater without an IDer?

I'm in western Loudoun county, about 20 miles from Frederick and can't hit that repeater or Alexandria at all.  I can get Warrenton and Blue Mtn clear as day, as well as one of the MD repeaters in the Baltimore area.  I also never seem to be able to reach the Winchester repeater. Signal propagation is a dark art!

Again, not entirely sure the one you think you are hitting in Baltimore isn't the unlisted one I was referring to.  If you read between the lines sounds like WQAE suspects the same.

  2. Very interesting.  I'll be watching to see if and how they implement the GPS bit.  Hopefully the price barrier would keep me from "hearing" where hundreds of kids in my area are while chatting on their Pokemon radios from Wallyworld.  On the FM for CB, I'm very for it and it might be useful enough to make get a new CB that was capable of doing both.  Could they do like interstitial channels on FM to deconflict or something?

  3. Not trying to be snipey here, but it's because there is no generally agreed upon channel. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against 20.  I'm hoping it becomes the undisputed calling king of what turns out to be very busy GMRS airways.  I'm just saying, by virtue of the fact so many people don't "know" and we are discussing it, don't you think it's still a bit of an unknown?  Saying "I declare it so" or seeing it on some other forum from some guy who says so doesn't make it so.

I was joking about 19, but I now officially support 20 for a "road" channel.  I hope it succeeds.

Honestly, if you stop talking that generally means they can begin talking again. OTOH, simply saying "over" or "back to you" will accomplish the task easily. ?

Pilots occasionally do that with us. Rest assured, if you ever hear a pilot say that on frequency to a controller, all the controllers are making fun of them off frequency  ?

Conversely, we used that phraseology all the time in Civil Air Patrol when I was younger.  Over (ksshhhhk).

  5. Not sure if this will be the official spot for this discussion since more visibility or not, but this will be enough to make me leave.  It is not hard to Google a screen name, and most people use the same name in several forums.  I don't want my entire online identify linked to somewhere my address and name can be accessed.

  6. I'm sorry, but I will disagree on both of your points axorlov.  I am not trying to be rude here, so please don't take offense.  Comparing your HT @ 4' to a mobile with a 1/4 wave antenna @ 6' and also 5 watts (hell, even 50) is not going to conservatively quadruple your range, especially in a suburban environment.  You claim that as proven fact but it's not.  And the Boefang hate here is just over the top ridiculous.  Are they as good as our local favorite (also Chinese) Wouxans?  Not by a long shot.  Not reliable?  Complete fantasy.  Please share all your horrible experiences with them breaking or not functioning adequately.  I will venture to say there would be no significant difference in performance either.  Considering the price point OP is shooting for, I'd say they are a very good idea. He already started $100 per handheld was out of the question.  What else could you recommend?
