  1. First trail GMRS use and man, do I prefer that over CB. Still have the CB installed in the Jeep as it will be a secondary form of comms for others that haven't seen the light yet. Running trails in Moab. Ran Elephant hill yesterday and on the way out, the team leader was well over 5 miles out and some generous but not too heavy terrain between us and we were talking back an forth as if we were standing next to each other.

    Oh yeah!

  2. Just completed a GMRS test between my Jeep and the significant other. We both have Midland MXT400 w/ 6db antenna mounted on her JK and my TJ.

Over 40 miles from Northern Colorado into Wyoming just south of Cheyenne.

My standing elevation was at 5K' and hers traveling maxed at 6.1K' with some moderate terrain signal shadowing along the way. Clear voice typically and 3 to 5 on RX.

  3. Just testing out Tapatalk with the same pics in my original post.....

And I didn't specify in my original post I'm using above the taillight mounts for both antennas.33d4cf12a0f73ca22d9cdb5f94ac539a.jpg6cc467ff451cbb32909894e44d0adfae.jpg

what brand and where did you get the tail light mounts? TJ or JK?

  4. 2006 TJ Rubicon with Midland MXT400 and 6db antenna. Radio mounted on center plate of the RockHard roll cage and antenna mounted on swing out tire carrier.

Cobra 75 WXST w/ FireStick. I took off the CB antenna at least for the time being.

  5. I'm in the same boat and have not installed my Midland as did not know what to do with the extra cable... One person said do not coil it up...

We are standing by for a good and correct answer...

Jack and for Kevin as well.

I just installed my new midland in my TJ with the antenna mounted on my swing out tire carrier. I too was under the impression not to coil the extra cable but was no problem as I was able to route the cable along the Roll Cage to the radio. I do have my radio mounted to the RockHard plate on my roll cage up high and forward.

I am interested in this as I have to install a radio in the wifey's JK and will use the mount that fastens up by the windshield so there will be a lot of extra cable.

  6. welcome brother grats on the callsign, nice to see another person from Colorado. 6 inches is pretty close, im not a expert...just a Padawan, but that's pretty close and i would worry about the higher power eventually causing dmg to the cb, where as if u got a tuned cb again id worry about the same issue coming back into the mxt400. again I'm far from really knowing what I'm talking about that's just the way i would think about it, so take it with a grain of salt and I'm sure someone way smarter then me will give ya some great advice......what year is your jeep and can u get the bracket that would allow u to use the cb antenna on the drivers side tail light?

edited: cuz i cant spell it seems...

Thanks for the feedack! I have a 2006 TJ Rubicon. I would like to mount a bracket front drivers side off the windshield but Midland (MXTA21) is for JK's. I have one on order for the GF's JK and I can see if it is compatible. Midland says it is not. I may see about modifying. I think it would just be the Torx screw pattern that would be different. That or grab some steel and fab it myself. I think the ground plane for the antenna would be better at the front than at the soft top. I have the 6db installed at the swing out now next to the firestick. I'll remove the CB antenna at least temporarily. I'm looking to have the GMRS up and running maybe by tomorrow or Monday at the latest. The weather looks ideal for install.

  7. Hi gang. Just getting into the GMRS comms and will primarily use it for off road 4X4 activities here in the Colorado, Wyoming and Utah areas.

I bought a Midland MXT400 w/ 6db Gain for the Jeep. I have yet to get my equipment installed.

I just received my call sign today. WOOT!

There is a question on my mind that I would like to ask,

I still have a CB installed in the Jeep with the Firestick antenna mounted to my swing out tire carrier. The best option for my 6db is in the same location but about 6" away from the Firestick. Will having the two mounted that close become a problem? I don't foresee that both radios will be communicated on at the same time but they would probably both be on.

    Thanks
