It’s 60 fps of Rick Astley in all his full 4K UHD remastered glory; sounds like you may need to download more RAM if you ask me: https://downloadmoreram.com

Dangerously hidden behind a spoof website URL designed to look like a GMRS Association; and

A software developer asked me about a website called Download More RAM. I don’t think he heard my other coworkers snicker. He asked if it was a security issue, while missing the even more important question: Can you download RAM? I said it’s best not to visit the site, and spared him the history lesson.

  2. You're welcome!

Try using your HT outside and see if you can hit those repeaters. Do you have a higher gain antenna for your HT, such as the Nagoya 771G?

It sound like you are in Westchester, and if so Topanga (Saddle Peak) may be your best best to gain access.

I actually like that repeater and when Kevin @w6wko was in his pre-amateur license days, and I were attempting to find stable communications between my location and his up over the Angeles National Forrest into Santa Clarita/Canyon Country, we discovered this repeater worked nicely for both of us.

If you go the base station route: I am a big fan of the Radioddity DB20-G, which out of the box is an 18 watt, mini-mobile (fits in the palm of your hand), cigarette lighter plug for power and slap a $29 mag mount on the car and you're mobile!  Costs about $109 depending upon the deals being offered at the time of purchase.

    I have two!

You shouldn’t let “one bad apple” ruin your enjoyment and if you enjoyed your sig, leave it.

Thank you Marcus for your understanding and patience; especially in a thread that I chose to comment on your sig, since it seems we'd beaten this horse to death (width of rubber on magnetic antenna mounts).

But it seems Steve should consider becoming a Chef, because he loves to stir the pot! ?

I was under the impression that to be able to use an *Open* local repeater that has published their Tone Up/Down I had to have both Up and Down tones set to the correct value.

So you're saying that how it's done is just to program the repeater's Down tone?

It is a bit more complicated that that, but in essence leave the Receive Tones turned off until such time as you are successfully completing contacts on that repeater.

When your communications are successfully, and you are sure that the repeater is sending out a Tone for you to Receive; then if you turn on that Receive Tone, you will only hear the output of that Repeater.  You will not hear anyone else on that frequency, such as simplex users and perhaps another repeater on that frequency.

What happened to the Victor X-Ray? ?

So a question I have is that I requested permission to use repeaters and they were approved but the owners didn't message me the unlisted PL TONES. Do I have to somehow message them and beg for the tones? I would have assumed that in the response message field they would have maybe responded with something instead of just an approval. What's the typical process of getting tones on an unlisted non subscription repeater? Thanks.

Which radio do you have? Which repeater?

Since you are approved, if you can hear others gaining access to that repeater on the INPUT channel, for example 467.550, and if your radio can scan for tones, you can gain the information you need before they send you it.

That's one reason I picked up the TYT-UV88 for just $34 with free shipping, because it is a ham radio VHF/UHF HT that can be opened to GMRS and scans for tones. It is similar to the Radioddity GM-30.

Yes, but when you begin arguing the accuracy of another member’s signature line instead of simply ignoring it, it spoils enjoyment for many more than just you.
Or is it all about you?

In my professional experience, before I retired, I was required to "communicate" with others.  I certainly did not learn that skill while studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, but did so in my studies for an advanced degree in another subject.

I would never make a valid point ("instead of simply ignoring it") but yet immediately follow it up with a personal insult ("Or is it all about you?")

So I am not going to reply to the substantive portion of your comment ("arguing the accuracy of another member's signature line instead of simply ignoring it"), even though I feel yours is an incorrect response, because I do not respond to personal insults.

    YMMV

I have spent a few hours scanning from my house with the stock antenna. I have channels 1-7, and the 8 repeater channels set to scan. I probably should drive around a little while scanning to see if I can pick up anything close by.

Before you drive around, just let it sit and scan a few evenings and mornings while you are doing something else and see what pops up!

Looks like you are closest to these repeaters:

    https://mygmrs.com/repeater/5330

    https://mygmrs.com/repeater/6460

    https://mygmrs.com/repeater/5671

Of which only the first one, Ingleside TX, seems to be open and the other two require permission (so go to their map pages linked above and ask permission).

Then go drive by the first one and see if you can "hit" it and if you can, announce your call sign and ask for information about that repeater.

The first one (Ingleside) has these notes:
