  1. Don't confuse good laws with bad ones.
  2. Not everywhere has cellular. Also, real time hands free talk usage situations. No need to dial with a radio.
  3. I forced three young people who had bought radios to get their license. They had no idea.
  4. Humorously, the $20 UV-5R is getting purchased by teenagers in the droves right now with zero understanding. Me, with full understanding of how radio technology works, and the owner of a Yaesu VX-7R, can't put out .5watts on 462.550 without black helicopters showing up? I mean, its just laughable. The box has been opened wide by the FCC itself in allowing fully programmable radios out there in the first place for decades. I know the real answer (they don't care). But I do care! I'm not asking for much. As a licensed responsible ham I understand that I would need to input frequencies into a radio a certain way. Its not rocket science!
  5. On the contrary. I'm building support for the changing of something, not endorsement of something. What is everyone so afraid of? Its okay to think. You have a brain, say what you think, not what someone else is telling you to think.
  6. I'm not afraid to discuss the betterment of the industry and I suggest we all discuss it in a public forum. There is nothing to be afraid of. We have say in how our government functions. I'm trying to ascertain, does everyone of you with a dual license have an issue with legal support for carrying one radio? Like, does it bother you if someone could have both in one package?
  7. You are correct, I'm trying to avoid using two different radios. I was just pointing out that the argument that a certified GMRS radio can not support a Ham configuration when I can in fact buy one legally that does! Forum members have shown at least two radios that fully support both GMRS and Ham, but that they have to be rebooted (basically) to change them. The argument, If this is possible, why all the fuss about me using a different memory channel for one service and another memory channel for the other? Again, the pretzel logic of the FCC. Its starting to look like maybe someone is trying to rip us all off? Shocking, I know.
  8. Yeah, that is an interesting radio. It means that I can, as a dual licensed individual, switch the radio around to the service I want to use. That's what I've been asking for. So, it does exist? Also, confusing, there is a GMRS version of the UV-5R here. It is software configured for GMRS only. This means you could have two UV-5Rs setup for different services. The logical conclusion of this is I could "switch" modes on the fly.
  9. I'm having a conversation on another board. They've hinted that there is a legal radio. I'm awaiting their response.
  10. I think it goes back to, "how did we get here?" These "rules" were created and codified by the same body who is also allowing CCRs to be sold. Whatever the FCC is doing does not make sense. Either they are serious about these rules or they are not. Its not logical to say they believe their rhetoric and then allow CCRs. I can not control what Amazon sells, but the FCC can. They want me to defend them among my peers who buy UV-5R on Amazon do they? Or maybe, they agree with me, that is silly to carry two identical radios? Some people want to carry three radios? More power to them.
  11. Sorry, yes. I'm just confused. I read the words, but the reality in practice makes no sense. And I think others feel the same. We as a people using radio can do better than this. We don't have to point to a document that states, "jump off the bridge, everyone else is doing it". We can do better. I'll see what I can do. Thank you for your help.
  12. How did you determine its referring to transmitters? A previously stated paragraph?
  13. Wow, that is a ball of ambiguity. Sounds like it is saying there is no such thing as a certified GMRS device that can monitor another frequency outside of GMRS. How do GMRS repeaters work then? What is the most common hardware used for GMRS repeaters? This rule is not taken seriously at all. Which only proves my point of how invalid it actually is in practice. The art of radio, is not about making me carry a UV-5R & UV-5G at the same time. There is serious error here.
  14. But I can ... it is "software". The hardware is identical. I can, in fact, modify the software.
  15. I will modify it back for GMRS usage.
  16. Stay with me here ... I'm the individual, I'm personally using the service in compliance. The radio I would be using has been certified for GMRS (UV-5G). Certified is a past tense term. The hardware is certified. We've established that. As a HAM, I can change the hardware into a HAM radio, because that is within my privileges.
  17. Why can all radios be so easily modded then? The whole Mars Mod is in fact for opening up a radio for use on privileges the operator has. Can you show me the legal statement of what makes a GMRS radio? Like, I don't know where all this is.
  18. Enjoying the conversation. This is an interpretation is it not? I'm not bound, the manufacture is. I can use GMRS correctly on identical hardware known as UV-5R.
  19. That is an incredibly revealing point you've made. Are you saying that type acceptance is actually for the manufacturer and not for the radio operator? This is why it is so easy to mod a Yaesu, Baofeng, and others to operate on all the bands one is licensed for. We actually already have the permissions to do so? Interesting.
  20. Imagine accidentally reaching for the UV-5R, and thinking it was your UV-5G because they are in fact identical! That would be funny!
  21. That's a fair admonishment. It takes knowing the community first. Once people visualize that carrying a UV-5R & UV-5G on their belt is illogical, we can begin the process of making a formal petition. Thank you for your feedback.
  22. Asking my elders.
  23. The foundation of the Ham universe is ham's policing themselves. We determine "how" the FCC is going to act. Thus on internet forums, people actually tell others, presumably with a straight face, that one must carry two identical radios. Instead there should be push back and someone on this board is connected to the FCC and we agree to have that very silly "rule" changed and codified in print. Not keep it going for decades.
  24. But why? I want to hike with a radio and talk to my friends. I don't want to use their CCR of choice, I want to use my Yaesu VX-7R. Why is this so complicated? Why have older hams allowed this nonsense to go on for so many years? Do people really carry two different radios (that are exactly the same hardware)? That is funny! Truly hysterical if someone carries an UV-5R & UV-5G on their waistband, lol.
  25. How is it logical that the UV-5R and the UV-5G are the exact same radio?
