  1. The new TidRadio is licensed for both bands. The writing is on the wall for the big three if they won't make an all in one radio that is type accepted for multiple bands. If you have a license, you should be able to use the same radio, its just common sense. The Yaesu VX-7R is the same radio as the HX470S, except the HX470S is typed for FRS too. Its time to stop playing games. The KG-UV9PX is the same thing as the KG-UV9GX. I think they may have changed the sticker on the front! UV-5R vs UV-5G. And on and on with so many radios. How do you feel about this?
  2. I would like to see the test changed, not go away. The test questions for technician are totally out of scope for what most people actually do on 2m/70cm. They buy a radio and talk on it! Make the test cover that use case really well. Not all the silly other electronic stuff. Push that out into the higher levels.
  3. I've thought about getting the SureCom SW-102. Like you say, just looking for the big errors. Would like the RigExpert Stick 230, but doesn't do UHF. Would have to get the Stick 500. Not cheap.
  4. I recommend the Wouxun KG-UV9PX which is a slight enhancement of the UV9D. However, I don't know all the tiny differences. See my review here. Really cool radio.
  5. Well, I've had a lot more experience now. No, I don't need it. 2m/70cm and GMRS/FRS are all that is really needed because that is what most people are using anyway. However, that still forces the APX 7000/8000 requirement. I don't know of a true rugged GMRS radio that can compete with the VX-6R/7R. Again, all this silly market segmentation I've had to go through. Unless I'm mistaken, the only radios that are still in production and come close to meeting my simple requirements are the VX-6R or APX-8000. That is an extremely wide gap. Used radios no longer manufactured don't count. I should be able to buy new and recommend to others. The FT3D was a really cool radio, until you take it outside on extended hikes. A silly speaker mic connector design. Not rugged at all. Forced touch screen requirements for some settings. Yadda Yadda. The VX-6R works, but only just so. Its DW feature is really, really broken. Super hard to actually watch two frequencies in actual use.
  6. I did look at that. But I could buy 16 vx6r's for the same price. ?
  7. Switching my hiking radio now to be the Yaesu VX-6R. In actual use, the Yaesu FT3D & Wouxun KG-UV9PX, while being extremely nice radios, fall short out in the wild. They don't have locking or sealed connections for example. Loud and clear audio is a must and being rugged is more than a feature, it has to be a design goal.
  8. I use a Garmin GLO2 with an iPhone 14. Seems very accurate. Because of where I normally store my iPhone, the external bluetooth GPS unit really helps.
  9. Look at the Wouxun line of products.
  10. You've come across archaic sections of the FCC rules. Imagine someone telling you that you can't say, "Meet you at the rendezvous, over." vs explicitly saying where and what you are doing. You have a brain. Its okay to use your brain. Its okay to think and reason. You are better, and always will be than ChatGPT and its endless database entries of biased entries.
  11. Everyone should get the UV5R. Overtime you learn what you want and you'll eventually get the Wouxun UV9PX. It really is ten times the better radio, but going in, you don't know or understand what makes a radio better than another. Yaesu should take a good look at how the UV9PX is laid out and make some adjustments to their lineup.
  12. The problem is not the price of ham gear, it is the horrible user experience. Why pay $600 for a radio that has 0 product management? Terrible software, silly menu structures, cheap materials. You don't get much for your dollar. Yaesu's rugged radio design (VX-6R) is almost 20 years old now with what, like six characters to name your channel? Come on man! Because the big three quit caring & trying.
  13. That's good advice. But there is value in buying a bunch of junk and learning. If you go straight to the top, you don't know "why" things are better.
  14. Yes, it is a really nice and well packaged radio. As you noted in your other post, the Band button will wake up the screen. But Menu option #1 AB:s can be setup to Always On.
  15. Which Motorola models have VHF/UHF? APX 7000 & APX 8000? Those are big radios, does any of the XPR line have a dual band configuration?
  16. I think they are identical. Let me know when you get them.
  17. The Wouxun UV9PX (and G version) are the best of the cheaper style radios. Very easy to use, work well.
  18. Nice. Wonder if this connect affects water ingress any? My iPhone doesn't seem to have much of a problem getting soaking wet, however. I like it.
  19. A good radio for this is the UV9PX or G variate (same radio). Review here.
  20. Post a write up in the review section if you can. Thanks. I've made a comparison to the FT3D here.
  21. It would be good to have a sample sound output from the various digital modes made from same voice input. I do not like the sound of DMR and what it does to the human voice. For professional applications, sure, cram everything to utilize your limited frequency. While AllStar is a linking protocol, and not a mode, at least it does so using VoIP codecs like G.711 (ulaw) which sound fantastic, G722 being the best. In my opinion, that is the direction we need to go as a group. When you hear a proper voice codec next to DMR or the other popular digital modes, you won't want to go back. So I would like to see radios use G722 and then package that in a way for simplex and group repeating situations. We don't need to do what others are doing just because the word digital is being thrown around. Digital, with limited sampling is not better, it is worse.
  22. Hang in there, its a good radio. But yes, all the manuals are bad.
  23. That makes me nervous about GMRS repeater usage. It is too small a band to become a "public airways" chit chat service. Let's see what happens.
  24. @gman1971 Do you still have the radio? Did the bugs get worked out? I see they have a AnyTone AT-D578UVIII Plus variant of this radio.
