  1. I don't think it keeps you young but i think Amateur Radio including GMRS becomes more popular as you age. I've had my Ham Lic for over 20 years and never really started using it until the last 5 years after i retired. Although i use to HAM quite a bit, i now spend most my radio time on GMRS... Way more comfortable over here where on the HAM side you always have someone breathing down your neck..
  2. we use ch 5...
  3. is that tower only being used for GMRS?? I'm lucky,, on a 30' mounted 14' ABGL and my house sits on a hill 225' above the valley below..
  4. New York and Jersey runs circles around Georgia in linked repeaters.. Linking is happening in almost every state.. The worst i think, New York
  5. The best is the one you want to spend your money on. Or, you can always flip a coin. Heads Nagoya, tails Tram.
  6. I've got a Hytera purchased from retired school district equipment on Ebay for cheap.. About a year ago their was tons of this on the market as schools and cities went digital. In fact, one of them out of the two i purchased was brand new in the box.. My investment for the RightSide repeater including duplexer and antenna is less than 2K and right now if i sell the spare that i have i can actually make more on it than what i paid for both.. This repeater even has a controller built in.. In my mind, spending 7K for a repeater, with good equipment available on the used market is ludicrous. But hey,, each their own.
  7. Your repeater works pretty decent. I was hitting it pretty strong from 605 for a ways last month.
  8. You can get a decent repeater going for 2k.
  9. a long time ago i shelled out some good money ($45) for a Comet (i don't remember the model) HT dual band antenna. I never was able to ascertain the difference between that and the standard stock antenna. I gave up spending money on HT antennas and just use what came with the radio.. And honestly, considering they are HT's never been dissatisfied .
  10. I know,, Just saying, who many of us have a 5RM and refer to them as a UV5.. I do cause i'm a lazy 'ole fart
  11. my first guess, they're using HT's . And my second guess, based on where i think they were flying, 25 miles from my location..
  12. How many of those GMRS listeners are gong to record and log your flight path. My point is, the FAA records and retains and the less of any of that bread crumb the less headaches one might endure sometime down the road. The lesser of two evils is what im pointing out
  13. He might have the M model.
  14. I once lost (bricked) a radio during firmware update. After 5 minutes into the update and not seeing any response on the software side, I actually thought windows locked up and did a ctrl- alt-del to shut down the program. The radio then started flashing astraks. Got. In touch with Atlantic, they confirmed I bricked the radio. I got lucky, they sent me a new replacement on warranty repair. I’,ve never done a firmware update since,
  15. Yea,, when you are interested in only those in your group.. Who cares about those 'other' guys?
  16. for the most part, i have learned to ignore my assigned DMR ID and rely on my unique ID i made up.. As long as it gets programed in all the radios in your group, good to go and harms no one.
  17. well, my first guess, most vhf aircraft communictions, espeicaly commercial, is heavily monitored and recorded... My choice to have a somewhat private conversation with someone would be the lesser of the two..
  18. Thats cool stuff.
  19. There you go…. I bet these guys get some good range…. …. &n
  20. So kicking back at the lake tonight and i catch a conversion with two guys on Ch 16, one pointing out where he off roads in the Kern Canyon.. I can tell they are in Helicopters and I'm assuming two different aircraft. Via the conversations they are returning to Bakersfield after doing aerial surveys somewhere in the Kern Valley.. Not that i really care about these two guys yapping but it got my curiosity going. GMRS is a ground-base communications service, does this mean you or not allowed to use GMRS radios on Aircraft. I guess i'm being lazy, i couid read the rules again,, , but last i did, i certaainly don't recall anything in the rules specifying aircract use..
  21. First off,, what the hell are you expecting out of a $75 DMR Radio?? Sounds like you want to squeeze a Escalade from a Hyndu.. I can tell you the DM32 will give you a lot more Digital/Analog radio then you'll find for twice as much or more. All i can tell you, if the DM32 doesn't fit your size 13 foot, move on.. I'm happy with it. I shared my experience with it. And more to come when i get a chance. You read what i said about it, I'm defiantly NOT going to write a book to try to convince you to buy. You should just go buy the Anytone D87 at 4X's more, but you won't get anything more.. Have Fun.. You jsut need to stick with Open GD..
  22. you thought 70CM was expensive..
  23. But it's so much easier to tell everyone to log into MyGMRS, Do a city search, than do a I.D. search than scroll into a map than launch another page to find your channel freq than.............
  24. woiuldnt it be easier to include your simplex info in your monthly neighborhood watch flyer.. Outside of your little community, who cares about whats going on there? Just asking for Johny. Jonny wants to know
  25. i'm not talking about the Animal, but the stuff smells like it
