you never know.. it's good to have a couple radios around set up for encryption. The Baofeng approach is nice because most people will not shell out hundreds of dollars to have the option. Each person in our camping group has this radio ordered up. I ordered mine from Radioditty and have gotten two shipping delay notices.. Couple of friends ordered direct from Baofeng and they also recieved delay notices.. A lot of folks must be ordering this radio.

I was using a DTMF switch that required an HT transceiver to remotely shut down my repeater. It worked but wasn't always reliable. One of my friends told me about an eWELink WiFi switch he uses for his garage door opener that works off a free eWelink phone app.. (both androoid & IOS). I bought one on Amazon along with a fused 30A relay. All together $12 bucks. Tested it out on the bench, works great. I can shut down the repeater anywhere in the world and it's pretty much 100% reliable.. Just got done printing up a case to hold it all.. thought i would share for anyone looking for an easy solution.. If you want the 3D box print... message me, i'll send it to youl. The eWeLink switches come in a one Ch, two Ch or 4 Ch DC configurations. i used their 'one Ch.' for this project. IMG_3172.HEIC

I had a bunch of COM Port issues on Windows 10 running different CPM's for my Hytera Radios.. Found a solution on Hytera forum, ComPortMan (free) will manage your comm ports and not allow conflicts. Runs in the background, never had comm port issues since.

100% of my HAM friends have their 'HAM' radios tuned into GMRS . And i would say most or maybe all of them have their radios programed to FCC required specs.. i.e. power levels, bandwidth, frequency etc. None that i know of have FRS programed into their radios. I wold be willing to bet ya a 'Silver Dollar' that most hams in this country do the same. Most just don't talke about it. -
if you can get into it, you can.. thats the hard part. There are lots of guys in the Linux family that love doing that stuff. In fact in the late 90's before AutoCad allowed 'Add-Ons' guys were tweaking its code do to a lot of stuff.. I used many of the tweaks they invented at work all the time.. In fact we used Bentley Cad for the most part and there was a guy in Atlanta in my industry that was changing the Bentley Cad code to add a whole host of nice tools our industry used. The tools he was creating got very popular so he started a compnay called Focus 1 and started selling his version along with a licensed paid for copy of the Bentley software. it was actually a copy of Bentley with his code changes. . Eventually, Bentley caught on to what he was doing and sued Focus 1.. The guy ended up forfeiting his version of code to Bentley and since Bentley has been marketing those tools as Bentley Comms. Our compnay had 8 seats from this guy with a huge investment in them.. We ended up going to AutoCad, when Bentley started to hardball us on purchasing their new versions without discounts... I dont't think many left are using Bentley.

there is plenty of code editors out there, depending on the source code you want to look at or edit.. But you'll have to fire up a Linux box and find a password cracker on the dark web for programs you may want to edit.. There are 1000's of these paswords cracks available. I can't say i have actully used them but i know they work.

Not me, i seldom use CHIRP and don't think i've ever talked about it.. I would use CHIRP over anything you would pay for though.
-
Did you program with Chirp?? When your Tidradio H3 Plus shows "H8" on the display, id's likely indicates a confusion or malfunction in the radio's programming or the firmware, causing it to incorrectly display a different model designation or to attempt to operate in a mode or with settings more appropriate for an H8 radio. If you've recently programmed your H3 Plus with software like CHIRP, there might be a conflict in the programming, potentially leading to the "H8" displays. Solution: Try deleting all channels and reloading your configuration file or using the CHIRP software to re-program your radio and upload the correct settings for the H3 Plus.

try going to their site at the moment.... BTW Baofang supposedly has a new CPM for their new DMR radio.. I havent download it it yet but it did read that talk groups can be programed into the radio and changed on the fly, where this couldn't be done on their orginal DMR radio.. CPM is on their website, t'm gonna download and check it tomorrow. As far as 'looking' at code, with the right editor(s) you can check into any code and even find hacked passwords on line. But looking is no fun,,

Do you really trust open sourcee firmware?? Asking for johnny

My repeater is open to anyone that wants to use it, following rules of course.. And i do reserve the right to shut it down on the ocasional 'jack wad'.. Dosen't happen offten but it does and usually due to one 74 year old looser named Ron Antonson
-
thats true.. I ordered the DMR ver because i wanted to compare to my Hytera HP682. Also ordered a UV28 Plus on the analog side.
-
per the specs on Baofeng it looks to be the same radio minus DMR... It as the same zone and ch options, Which attracts me.
-
Did you order one yet ??

yea,,, and i still eat candy at my old age..

i can give you my experience while RV' ing with RV friends. Most of the time we travel in groups of 3 to 4 other RV's on the road. We all have GMRS radios and we all started out using HT's. After the first time together using HT's we discovered communicating with HT's pretty much sucked. We were lucky to reach each other when we got separated by as little as a mile. The low profile HT antenna and fact we all were pulling huge signal blocking clumps of fiberglass and steel was the problem. Once we all got mobile radios this problem pretty much went away. With the mobiles we can stay in touch easily as far as 20-25 miles apart and sometimes further, especially when we are hitting repeaters. Traveling through canyons is a bit of a problem even with a mobile but dependable within 2 miles. I will say one of they guys in our group 'was' using a Midland Ghost antenna, which worked pretty good for the most part but he was the first guy we lost in the canyons..... Early on i did adapt my HT to a Mobile antenna, which helped a little but no comparison even close to using a good 50W Mobile.. In my case i use a Hytera HM782

Got one coming. Saw that when ordering a UV28. I like the group option which both radios will do.
