  1. you are welcome to use whatever you want, its your money.. I can tell you i have operated repeaters in the spec range i specified and had no problems talking over a range of 100+ miles. I've had more issues with Antennas effecting my range than the coax and length. Just my two cents.
  2. if you are running a 40-50 W Repeater and your antenna is within 150-200', go with LMR 400. If you are pushing over 200' then consider Heliax Coax. With the latter, be prepared to shell out a lot of money, coax, connectors, tools etc.......
  3. When i had my JK Jeep, my Midland SMRS antenna was mounted on the left cowl back side of the hood. It worked fantastic in any direction. Now with my 10 meter mounted there, not so good. In fact i couldn't find a single place to mount my 10 Meter that worked as will as it does on my truck.
  4. Welcome and happy GMRS ing.. Family, friends, enemies.. whatever, just have fun and enjoy..
  5. Personally, i don't care what language is used.. A lot of people do for whatever reason but i find this is why the ch knob was invented.
  6. about two years ago i was making a trip to Bass Pro with some friends i was visiting in Glendora. My brother was meeting us there, we was coming in from opposite direction. We were using a 'local' repeater to communicate then jumped over to Ch 7 when we got close enough. When we started talking, no one was on their air, we soon got jumped on by two spanish speaking individuals. Two of the guys with me from Glendora speak Spanish fluently. They were relaying what the two spanish guys were calling us gringos.. quite comical once the two spanish guys got hold of the mic. I think the guy with the local repeater even made a few comments.
  7. I like the 'Bullseye' mark.
  8. I think the FCC uses the term 'grand fathered' because they know at some point, the old fart is going to die and sometimes the FCC can't wait for that to happen. Back in the day we had a 12GHz Microwave link. The FCC soon claimed the band for other uses and gave us a 'Grand Father' clause to keep operating. That didn't last but two years when they sent us a letter giving us 90 days to cease operation. Thank god we were well into building a fiber backbone to replace that old unreliable Microwave. It's my understanding that band is now used for government purposes.
  9. for 70cm i think all you need for a perfect ground plane is something in neighborhood of 6-8 inches and yes ground plane does help in radiation pattern for long distances . https://m0ukd.com/calculators/quarter-wave-ground-plane-antenna-calculator/
  10. if after 360 some odd days, i think it would be easier and faster to apply for a new license.
  11. I wish,, that discussion seems to get squashed every time. ('d love to see that dialogue
  12. I know on a Maxon radio there is a huge difference between High Power and Lower Power 40/20 watts on a line of site contact roughly 90 miles apart. High Power a breeze, mid power - Gone
  13. My brother had a 2014 Ford F150 Lariat. Your only option will be getting a radio with a detachable head, mount the brick under the center console, (he center console comes out pretty easy) and mount the head unit in the front cup holder via a cup mount.. You can either print one or buy one. The Midland MXT 575 is another option for GMRS only. mount the brick under the center console and throw the mic inside center console.
  14. i think its something to do with 'China'
  15. And you probably paid less for the rack.. I have one of the 3rd brake light antenna mounts and knowing what i know now, i wouldn't pay $150 bucks. It is a quality milled piece of metal with a decent coax but it is a waste of money at the end of the da. I like the rack idea. Never thought of that.
  16. Well yea, that does change the picture.. i can imagine the moon roof will add more complications to the headliner removal. You may have to drop the whole headliner because the moonroof will not let you tilt down the headline form one side. You also dont want to route the coax along either outer edges of the headline because that will impede the air bag function. There are front fender mount options that mount under the hood and wrap around the hood by the cowl area. I had a jeep mount that worked well for that. The Mag mount works well too until you get into a good rain storm.. Don't ask me how i know that one. Good Luck. defiantly visit YouTube and see if you can get any ideas on difficulty for your headliner. It could be easier then you think and vis a versa. Good luck
  17. i've seen NMO reinforcment plates but i think they are meant to be used under a fiberglass roof.. Think i seen them on DX but can't remember
  18. im noticing some pretty good hikes on 3D printers ad laser etchers.. I wanted the new AMS for my Bambu labs 3D printer. A week ago i could have saved $125.. OH well, i keep using the version 1 that i have.
  19. Lowering the headliner even on one side was a pain. With the Ram you have to do it regardless if installing the 3rd brake light or drilling a hole to place an antenna. (BTW, holes size is actually 5/8). You won't have any water leaks if you get a good quality mount like a Midland, Larson, EM Wave (my favorite) and install it right. Google removing headliner on YouTube for your year/model Truck and see what you are up against. In my Ram doing one side would have provide more than enough room to drill and place a roof mount antenna. When i found my brake light on Ebay i was searching 'Auto Roof Antenna Mounts'
  20. Well, unless your using this product, your antenna won't be top notch
  21. i bought one on ebay for half the cost from a guy that never installed it in a Ram truck he had. It's a very nice quality setup up. Realizing i still had to lower one side of my headliner to run the cable, i was upset that i even spent $200 for it. Just drill tab a 3/4 inch hole and run the cable. in my case getting the headliner partially down was most of the work. There is no way i would spend $500 bucks for this.. Just my two cents, installed on a 2018 RAM 2500
  22. I'm hearing that Baufang is going to start farming out manufacturing to India. I think we are going to see a lot of this happening,,, Vietnam will be a manufacturing power house as well.
  23. I had a radio mounted on the center dash above that small storage pocket it blocked precious viewing while 4 wheeling. I tried mounting the FT900 control head on either side of the center console, it was a major pain for viewing. The best place to mount it was above the rear view mirror. The 4th place, the center glove box worked perfect for the MXT575 mic and i could even pull and use the mic with console closed. Had a buddy that put created a center din mount on his 3D printer and he two Icoms in there nicely. He used a JBL Marine style control head stashed in his glove box for his stereo. Nice set up...
  24. thats a nice radio. one of my camping buddies recently got one, I've had my eye on it since. Everytime i turn around it comes and slaps me.. Might have to pull the trigger
  25. i had two radios in my jeep, an Yaesu FT900, the control panel took up space above the rear view mirror and the MXT575 where i stashed the control mic in the center console. The main bricks for both radios were under both front seats. The MXT500 was an option but no where to put the darn thing. I think 99% of people wanting a GMRS radio the 575 will serve them well. My Hytera is programed for the repeater ch's and a small handfull of simplex channels, most everything else is HAM.
