  1. Is that firmware good for all UV-5R"s Baufangs included?
  2. i think your are pretty close to what we will see. I watched a launch video for a new line of Laser Etcher (Roly) company in China He said the tariff increase could mean about a $25-40 dollar hike on their product (a $2500 item) but also said they have the option to ship the parts here to the U.S. than assemble and ship from the U.S. to avoid cost increases. Im not sure how that works since they would still be shipping parts here to the U.S. but i guess that could mean radios could be done the same way
  3. was talking to my friend in Sacramento this afternoon. Not only was the Public Safety Act used to fund cities and counties to upgrade their communications from analog to digital but it also allowed some funding that clever grant writers used to get money to assist counties and its broadband cable providers to extend their plant into unserviced or underserved areas. And it was also used to create service tier levels for low income customers. That money has dried up but they are dipping into other grants getting money for the same thing.
  4. well, apparently the 'big pussh' to get things transitioned by end of 22 was to qualify for federal grants under the Public Safety Act which paid for almost 80% of the cost Cities and Counties had to incur. And you're right, after doing a little google research, the Puplic Safety Act was a mandate to move television from analog to digital. So the next the question, why the hell did that act provide grants to provide money for radio communications. No i did not read the entire bill, but i sure somewhere deep in there will provide that answer.. This is another reason i always note NO on aall Propositions and Measures. You always end up voting something just the opposite of what you thought. Pretty amazing that every city and county in the country didn't take advantage of of this bill.
  5. this topic will get interesting.
  6. pretty sure he said he was monitoring analog with a scanner. That does not meet the Digital Transition Act. Not claiming to be an expert on this, just relying on information from a friend who is a communications director for the state of calf.
  7. well sounds like some of them Hilly Billy's dropped the ball. Wanna have some fun, give their public safety communications director a call and ask why they are breaking the law.
  8. I'm pretty sure all public safety communications in the United States is now Digital as required by the Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005. When i left Sacramento in 2020 one of my friends who works in communications was scrambling to finish off some transitions that had to be done by 2021. A lot of cities added state and county measures to pay for it and some cities got federal grants. Even the school districts were involved. Pretty much why Ebay was flooded with good commericial radios and repeaters for good deals the last two years.
  9. Oh Boy, this is turning into............
  10. get you a cheap Baufang HT's if you don't have a radio already, watch some of the videos the guy here makes often, turn on the radio and begin playing.. Probably 99% of us here started that way..
  11. Spurou's emissions from baby room monitors have known to drive some radio enthusiasts nuts so i can imagine that spurious emmissions from a 5 Watt HT can do the same. However it's unlikely an HT will be in continuous XTMT mode so i dont think the damage would be that severed.
  12. the radios are part 95, at least thats what i see on Maxon's site. . No warranty. Never needed it. i did buy the programing and the cable for another $50 bucks. The Duplexer was given to me from a guy here in town that took down a CH 18 repeater. However i did have BuyTwoWay re ture it. He bought it from BuyTwoway. I recently scored a 25W HR652 on Ebay for $700 bucks, it's pretty much like new and was used on a campus school building. Will be soon be selling the Maxons to recoup some money. No, the Maxons are not waterproof but the Hytera is IP67. And snow, what is that, i never see it or play in it
  13. I dont't know which Retivis repeater your referring too, the RT97 is near $500 bucks. I paid 200 bucks for a 40 Watt repeater that works very well off my RV Solar Systems. If you're referring to using two HT's for a repeater.. good luck with that, it would really serve zero purpose other than to play with.
  14. i used two Maxon 8402 radios that fit nicely in the can. (FAT 50 Ammo Can). The 8402's don't require a controller, it's built into the radio, just patch them together and do the progrming. . I also placed a sheet metal shield between the radios and mounted a cheap duplexer (buytwowayradios) on the exterior back side of the can.. The FAT 50 can is more than enough space. I picked these radios up on Ebay two years ago from someone that never used them. Both radios $200 bucks.. Every once in awhile they pop up. These radios have no problems working together in that can, as they are pretty decent commercial radios.
  15. Well, i have built both the ladder lead version and the cooper version..The ladder lead actually cost me more money mostly because, like you say, i had a lot of the copper stuff laying around where i had to buy a mininum of 25' ladder lead to get going. (I actually bought 50') The Cooper was also easier to construct where the ladder version was a little more difficult due to razor cutting the dilelectric but was a lot easier to tune. Putting both versions to test under different scenarios convinced me that the copper versions performed better and not by much. I still use both and keep both with me in my RV for my portable repeater setup. I also experimented with dipoles and mobile antennas and found the J-Pole just worked better for my portable application. Yes, the dipole will out perform the J-pole but my cheap telescoping flag pole wouldn't handle the load in the slightest breeze.
  16. Nothing illegal owning/operating multiple repeaters,, Unless you are making money doing it.. Like most politicians whom become Millionaires the minute they enter office, finding and operating in the 'gray' areas is always overlooked and ignored. Does it piss off some people, Yup.. Does it make some people happy, Yup.. Is it right and fair? Some people say yup some say nope.. In regards to repeater usage on GMRS, I base my options on how the FCC set up GMRS and how they define its uses. No one has to agree with my opinions, i don't care if they do or don't. The important thing is, i'm able to voice them.. Like the Video guy,,there is a lot of things he says and does i disagree with and there are things he does and says i agree with, So i don't tune him 'out'. I still watch his videos and i leave comments he may thing are positive and some he may think are negative..
  17. You're right, and i do realize that currently there ar no rules prohibiting how many GMRS repeaters one can operate. I find it interesting that someone can invest 40-50K and more for a pool of repeaters to talk with their family and friends.. Usually you don't spend that kind of money unless you're gong to make money. t.. I guess there is more than one Elon in this world and thats cool.. Do i think it is right for one person in one area is allowed to dominate the entire GMRS spectrum with their slew of repeaters leaving out the guy that wants to use the service for it's intention.. No i don't. Now i have talked in person with one of these guys that operated a big handful of repeaters He is also a HAM guy and he said, before the FCC put the hammer down on Linking, he was making money via club membership. He also said he is winding down his operation because he is loosing tons of club members supporting it. So that tells me that probably most are making money on them.. And that is illegal and for a mother story.
  18. Stop fantasizing...
  19. anyone have one of these stashed in their closet or attic
  20. Well,, #47 just might make your day after all.. Good luck, i hope your are become wealthy and successful.
  21. Was on the phone yesterday with my stock broker and the hot investments right now are American companies competing with the Chinese market in hobby and light industiral arts stuff like 3D Printers, Laser cutters and etchers. etc. He also told me some products coming from China like the Bambu Labs 3D printers are going to be made in America still owned by China investors. Overall, i think this is all good and will drive quality back into the things we buy.
  22. J-Poles don't like any type of obstruction around them.. I have talked 90 miles + with my portable setup when mounted out in a wide open area.. But when i get around something like a single treee, it goes to hell like what you are describing. Overall i get pretty good performance from it, defiantly better than a fire stick. I also built a Ladder Lead J-pole, like the Ed Fong version, the copper version seems to work much better.
  23. Copper J-Poles are pretty hard to build for UHF, you must get the precise measurements to a T for the frequencies and they extremely hard to tune SWR's. As others suggested the best way to tune them is via a NANO VNA. I came up with a sliding adjustment gimmick for tuning SWR that works well. Made with cooper compression splices you can get at home depot.
  24. i did a duplicate filter and it did show some but not a lot. Check the highlights on the coordinates. repdubvalues.pdf
  25. I will throw this out when using Windows 11. For some reason i found ID O Matic needed a reboot about every 2-3 days because the time function by Windows 11 would lock up the I D O Matic. ID O Matic seems to use addresses from the Windows clock. I'm not sure if they addressed this, i had the problem about 1.5 years ago. It worked flawlessly when programed via Windows 10 Laptop but I ended up going to Open Repeater with an ICS for a controller. Since then i have aquired a repeater with a built in controller so not messing with controllers anymore. The ID O Matic was just o.k. but i enjoyed the ICS controller a whole lot better. In fact, i may end up implementing it back to my existing repeater.
