Which repeater are you trying to get tones for? Just looking at where your map is I looked at a few repeaters and all the ones I looked at in that area had the tones listed and were open repeaters. No request needed.

@Kdcstks I think the answer to your question is no on the 2 meter, yes on UHF. I might add that IMO it's never too late to rename your thread title. Cheers

I would add that repeaters that are open and require no permission can fall into the stale category easily. Once the owner puts it on the site there may be no reason to log back on the site for it and the site automatically puts it in the stale category after a year of not logging into it. This happened to a friend. I think it would be helpful if an email went out automatically to the owners of repeaters asking them to update yearly before it falls stale. Maybe this could easily be implemented by @rdunajewski? The site sends update reminders for GMRS license. I don't know, just a thought.

I noticed their Ham version is but their site says the GMRS version is 5 watts. Does this app change that?

@WRUI477 I personally do not have any experience using any other cable than the red Wouxun cable for Wouxun radios.

A little more info on loading the Beta in Chirp. First open newest version of Chirp and select load module from the drop down menu enter the number for your particular models issue number (number assigned to new model from Chirp developer). In the example I used the number for the Q10H. Then select your model as you would in regular Chirp and you should be able to download from your radio. Keep in mind it's a beta version and all that goes with that...

For info on Beta loading go here. Looks like the issue number for the KG-Q10G is #10925. More here. The Beta for the KG-Q10H worked good for me so I hope the same is so for the KG-Q10G. Good luck.

I have the ham version of this radio and while I haven't used the manufacturer software you can do what you are looking to do with the beta they have in Chirp. Chirp is currently working on the software for the KG-Q10G along with the KG-Q10H and you will be able to do this with Chirp. Here's a link to their progress.

The question as stated in the title "What is the best antenna and brand for HT GMRS radio?" So any references to non GMRS radios really don't apply to the question. In support of @Sshannon's statement the cheap GMRS radios like the Baofeng UV-9G come with duel band antennas. They are not specifically tuned for GMRS. Some of my less cheap (as far as GMRS radios are concerned) Wouxun radios came with antennas that are not duel band and at least are stated to be properly set for GMRS frequencies. The Nagoya NA-701G and the NA-771G are better than a stock Baofeng in my experience, the NA-771G may be just sightly better than the stock Wouxun and as mentioned by @WRHS218 I like the flexibility of the NA-701G over the stock rubber ducky.

I don't know about best but a lot of people (myself included) like the Nagoya NA-771G. It's a bit long though (about 15") so I use the NA-701G mostly (about 5.5").

@Tiercel as an example of things talked about above the connector on your Baofeng UV-9G is a Male SMA, the antenna that screws into it is a Female SMA..

It depends on what the radio has. Many are SMA (male or female). Check these adapter kits. For examples.

I have both the radios you mentioned. The Baofeng UV-9G and the Wouxun KG-935G Plus. KG-935G Plus hands down is my favorite GMRS Radio. If you gotta have quality and waterproof as well as even more frequencies to receive you could spend even more and get the Wouxun KG-Q10G, then you can jump in the hot tub and with quality. The ladies can see a cheap radio a mile away. In all seriousness I like the Baofeng and if I am worried about damaging a radio that's the one I'll grab but I've bounced my KG-935 off the pavement and not a scratch. I started to do a list of the differences but the most important difference is this. Which one do I grab when I want to use a GMRS radio? KG-935G Plus at least 99 out of 100 times. Ask anyone who has both and I'll bet that's their answer.

On 9/9/23 I was driving in Santa Barbra along the coast and had my radio on scan and I picked up a live surf competition being broadcast from San Clemente. I believe it was on 450.500 which is one of the local PD frequencies near my home about an hour north of where I was. The broadcast was a good 150-160 miles from me staight across the water. Zero obstructions. I confirmed what I was hearing when I got home by the names of the surfers and where they surfed that day. Radio waves be crazy. Why do I remember the day? It was the day I took my ham test.

The only time my “upload to radio” is grayed out is when there is no file downloaded. If I have a file open it doesn’t matter if the radio is plugged in or not, the “upload to radio” isn’t grayed out. Based on this I would say Chirp isn’t seeing a file. For context I am using Chirp on a Mac. No file, upload grayed out File but no radio plugged in, upload not grayed out Edit: the programming cables were plugged into the computer but not the radio. I then removed cables from computer and there were no changes in results.
