  1. You posted in the correct area. Some don’t like the voting system but as it was a technical question and the voting system is designed to allow the most relevant answers to move to the top. It is unreasonable to expect you to make a double post just for one person’s preferences. If you had made a second post someone would give you a hard time for that. Don’t worry about your post you are doing fine. I say all this as someone that prefers to read post in order by date but I’m not going to give the poster a hard time about it. Back to the original subject. If you tell us what the TX and RX frequencies are a determination of whether this is a GMRS repeater with an unconventional offset or if perhaps it’s an amateur band repeater could be made. Though it sounds like might have already determined that.
  2. No idea what any of this is referring to. Could this be the real issue? Back to this thread though. From where I sit you stated your thoughts and opinions and why. The back and forth seemed cordial and not emotional with things ending in an understanding. @SteveShannon actually comes full circle on his first post in the thread with a second mention on the definition of a station. Yes there were some side line comments from the gallery not worth taking seriously or personal. While I didn’t subscribe to your point of view, you made a good case without being an ass. That approach deserves a honest discussion and should be welcomed. You do seem like a good guy. If the forum isn’t working for you I respect that but I hope you’ll consider staying.
  3. Wow this went sideways fast, I had a coffee and some cookies (cranberry shortbread from TJ’s, thanks for asking) came back and a whole other page has been added. I thought this was basically a light hearted discussion on a rules interpretation of which there were never any real stakes or serious concerns. It didn’t seem worth taking that seriously. I thought it was resolved. Now people are threatening to leave, the internet is a black hole, and my cookies are gone man. Gone. carry on.
  4. Well sure, you do what you have to. I mean you don’t mess with aunt Sally. FCC be damned.
  5. You can communicate whatever info you received as an amateur station on GMRS because the second you key up on GMRS you have become a GMRS station communicating with another GMRS station. The meer act of using GMRS makes you a GMRS station communicating with another GMRS station, you are no longer an amateur station. This works the opposite direction as well. There’s also the first amendment which I’m sure takes precedence.
  6. No no you can do it! If you break the louvres off you can stuff Baofengs in the air vents and also they will stick to the dash in the desert heat. Also a rubber band or one of those hair tie thingys your wife or girl friend has will hold an extra one firmly in the ash tray… you can do it, totally.
  7. Ouch. My purchases have been mounting related. I did get a cable once for a mobile installation and no problems. They’re 10 min. from my house so in a pinch I can run over and get something.
  8. Marc, I have not been interested in their radios. However as @nokones mentioned they do have some mounting hardware and accessories you might want to take a look at. I have purchased a few things from them that are well made (no radios though). I do understand your aversion though.
  9. That’s called broadcasting and it is not permitted. That’s why you are not permitted to talk between services.
  10. Okay sure I have no doubt about that but that’s trail comms for clubs. Not what I would call a “call channel” if I’m splitting hairs. I don’t doubt someone might use 16 or some other channel for a call channel but a club is really more organized within itself with the expectation of talking to people in the club which isn’t really that different to a bring your own contacts situation if it’s different at all. All I was saying is I just haven’t witnessed a lot of random calling on simplex.
  11. What is this? The search for extraterrestrial life 1920’s??? DIY earbuds??? What the hell
  12. Pro tip for newbies regardless of which can you choose make sure to empty it first
  13. Best response of all time but so true.
  14. Cue Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire… This debate has been here since before some YouTube hobo declared it to be 19. That of course ignores the millions above line A. It goes on and yet I doubt it will ever be resolved. Most of all it does not seem to matter. No one seems to use a call channel for GMRS I suspect because it’s largely a bring your own contacts service. The channel that seems to be used most for a call channel will most likely be the one your local open repeaters are on. That is the one place I do hear call outs. Lots say they use 16 for off-road but still I don’t know that that’s used as a call channel. GMRS Chart 1-22 = push button-talk-listen 23-30 & > = set ctcss/dcs, push button talk through repeater-listen to response through repeater
  15. That looks ideal. Nice job.
  16. I am unsure if the shark fin on our 2018 Subaru Forester is more than just GPS. I’ve been searching but nothing conclusive yet. Of course once you drop the headliner you will know. If I were to get one of the combo NMO/GPS antennas I might go with this one. I remembered that it has a metal mounting and housing, better for the ground plane. I’m not positive if the other one I posted is (though I think it said it was). I did take a look at the area the moon roof retracts to and at least on ours it looks like it comes back pretty far. I know it wouldn’t be in the most ideal position but I might opt for a lip mount that goes on the rear hatch myself. Sometimes good enough is good enough. I’ll definitely follow your progress. Oh here is a video I found on installing the EM Wave.
  17. Another option is a mount like this that combines the satellite antenna and an NMO. What year is your Forester? I ask because we have a 2018 (with moon roof) that currently doesn't have a radio so I'm interested in how your install goes.
  18. Yes that’s correct. @WRXB215’s answer was quicker than mine and dead on thus I suspect also showing the importance coffee plays in radio
  19. Actually this forum has an amateur radio category and since it does amateur radio posting is obviously welcome here by the owner. You might make the case this should be posted there but since it was posted under the category of general discussion it could be said it’s appropriate here as well. Come on, you should know this by now.
  20. What @OffRoaderX said exactly, the fact that you heard it on the other radio after you let the button go is why I thought this.
  21. It’s always possible that a repeater could be down.
  22. Okay, I just wanted to make sure how you were testing between radios. The reason is if you are on the repeater channel with both you should only hear between them if they go through the repeater because the transmit is on a 467 and the receive is on 462.
  23. I have certainly been close enough to open the squelch on a repeater that I wasn’t close enough to be heard with a clear signal before.
  24. If you are hearing between radios and you are on the repeater channel you showed in your post then you are going through the repeater. As @SteveShannon has said not all repeaters kerchunk.
