  1. You get it from the repeater owner. Go to the repeater page of whatever repeater you are interested in using (you can find them on the map page of MYGMRS) and request access.
  2. There are so many better ways to communicate in an emergency these days so if I am using GMRS for an emergency it is because nothing else is available. In which case the channel I can contact someone on is going to be my emergency channel.
  3. Scotch 33+ 3M electrical tape as @gortex2 said the good 3M will last. The cheep stuff is useless. Also ? for @Sshannon’s UV cable ties.
  4. you were too fast for me,?
  5. Check page 52 and 53 of the manual. It sounds like you are sending the ANI code. Menu 16 to turn off
  6. It depends on what you are trying to bring in. If you are looking at GMRS frequencies the stock antenna on the KG-935G is specifically tuned for GMRS frequencies and hear it is pretty good. I have a Nagoya 771G also tuned for GMRS and I am pretty happy with it. Nagoya makes a shorter antenna the 701G that I have no experience with but I have been meaning to pick up and try out just to have something a bit shorter for hiking. If you are using your radio for scanning someone else on here may have a suggestion for something dual band.
  7. I agree with @Sshannon a return shouldn’t be a problem. Sorry we couldn’t help. I tried to recreate the problem but nothing I did caused the issue. Let us know how it goes.
  8. It definitely is the bottom button, the one with two dashes as you say. Also as @Sshannon mentions just one press. I think there may be an issue with the radio. When I pull the battery from mine the light defaults to off when it's plugged back in. Very odd indeed. Where did the configuration come from for the event?
  9. I think I would down load a copy of all stored frequencies first and go ahead and do the reset on the radio. Be sure to save it all because it won't save any of the frequencies even the preloaded ones.
  10. Okay, well then. Hmmm? I don't know how you would or could do that. Perhaps not in Chirp?
  11. When I first got this radio I was testing the FM radio and hit the sk1 button longer than needed and set off the alarm... now there is a feature I could do without.
  12. You are correct. He mentioned the SP button? Maybe just hitting wrong button? It’s a quick push instead of holding for MON. I tried leaving mine on and unplugged the battery and when I plug it back in it stayed off. ?
  13. I don’t see any option to change the MON button in chirp for this radio. Have you tried just pulling the battery and putting it back in? Also it isn’t the SP button but rather the Sk2 button. The lower of the two smaller buttons. Hope this works for you.
  14. This was the piece of the puzzle that was bugging me. Nice catch.
  15. Roger beep? It takes place as you end your transmission… should have called it the “over beep”. Just saying.
  16. just tried checking on an iPad and the whole site is wonky...
  17. @MichaelLAX it's gone... just like my profile picture
  18. I have to say I also have a pile of unused ones also. That said I do have a more robust lanyard with a ring and a clip so if I go out on the water or some place precarious I can clip it to me and it’s not going anywhere. I just keep it in the glove box. But those wrist straps I just wouldn’t trust them.
  19. In Op’s scenario though he was trying to extend the signal he gets from someone else’s repeater I believe. So his method would have to hear or input from that 462 from original repeater and then put out on another 462 if I understood correctly. I liked @Sshannon back to back radio idea fwiw
  20. I was thinking like an unlocked Baofeng GT-3WP. No, no of course I wasn’t.
  21. Not to reopen a can of worms but this seems like a scenario where a duel band receive (and TX) radio with GMRS and MURS would be handy… I know it’s not allowed.
  22. For me personally my interest in this subject (other than just the to have the knowledge) is so that if I take a hike away from camp (realizing that all radios have limits) what will work to keep in touch with my wife while I’m out and about. So Ham isn’t going to be an option (she wouldn’t be interested) of course Garmin inreach is but I’m thinking radio here and that leaves GMRS or the no license required MURS. Mostly we hike together but going out in a kayak may be another matter and for that I think GMRS won’t be a problem. I also don’t count on repeaters being out in the woods. @axorlov (how’d I do there @MichaelLAX ?) makes a good case for my needs.
  23. Thanks Lscott. I will give that a read. So many variables in this stuff and no shortage of things to learn.
  24. I hear people say VHF will do better in the woods than UHF. Usually in the context of MURS compared to FRS. So apples to apples as far as wattage is concerned at it's most allowable on the two (MURS/FRS). My question is how does MURS specifically at 2 watts compare with GMRS at 5 watts in the same use case? Say in the woods. Does the VHF due to it's behavior still perform better than the UHF? Same? Less than? Does the increase in wattage give GMRS an advantage in this situation. In an apples to oranges wattage comparison. I understand there is more than wattage at play here. Seriously wondered about this as one of the things I like to do is go hiking. I don't have MURS radios but if I did I would give this a test. okay I need more coffee as I just read the last post and not OP and his statement. Though I don't know what channel he was on so maybe they were putting out the same wattage and my original question is still valid. MichaelLax was your test same wattage? Obviously that's an urban environment. Anyway sorry I missed OP's comments about his experience.
  25. I don’t have this radio but Try putting it in location channel 24. This is channel 16 frequency (462.5750) in a repeater location (462.5750/467.5750) and should be able to put your tones in and have the offset already. You may find this tone mode chart helpful also. It does look like you chose the right code for 654 DPL. I hope this helps.
