1. If you’re looking to clean up the install, consider detaching the faceplate and mounting the radio body under one of the front seats. You can use some heavy duty Velcro (hook side) on the bottom of the radio, then it’ll stick to the carpet well (avoid the rear seat heating ducts).

The faceplate could easily mount to the top of your cubby area using the same type Velcro, or better yet 3M tape strips (often found at the hardware store).

This would eliminate the boxes and all that mess in the console.

2. I looked at several different sites that sell the antenna.  I found only one (https://www.tessco.com/product/450-470-mirage-antenna-black-68593) that actually gives the antenna gain using meaningful units. All the others said either “unity gain” which means the effective power is multiplied by one, which is mathematically the same as 0 dB added, or simply said 2 dB, which has no reference and is thus completely ambiguous.
Tessco properly expressed the gain referenced to an isentropic antenna (dBi).  They list the Larsen as having 2.15 dBi, which is exactly the same as 0 dBd (decibel referenced to a dipole), meaning it has the same gain as a dipole. A dipole always has 2.15 dBi.
Gain dBi (dBi) 2.15 dBi

OK Steve, good info but waaaaaay over my head.

The fact remains that it worked better for me than the Midland 3db.
3. SteveShannon thank you that explanation helps a lot!
My curiosity is now satisfied. Looks like if I want to go 3dB gain I’ll be getting an antenna built that way.
Now to decide between trying a 3dB behind the rear rollbar or putting the puck antenna up there.
Then again, that cowl mount is still an option.
nokones was that a gain antenna you had mag mounted to the rollbar? What kind of performance did you get?
Also, Hoppyjr what kind of range are you getting with the cowl setup? I’m curious since it’s a 0dB antenna.
Lastly for both of you fine folk: is there a noticeable difference between performance in front vs behind your Jeeps with those respective setups?
Still kickin’ around the idea of maybe a single puck mounted high with a custom ground plane mount…but I like options!
Thanks to everyone else who chimed in too! I appreciate all the input!

I’m not sure where you got “0 db” as the specs suggest about 2.4 but I think it varies. I initially had the Midland 3db “Ghost” antenna and I find the Larsen outperforms the Midland in actual use.

We were in my son’s Jeep in North Bend (Washington) and hit a repeater that is over 70 miles away (Gold Mountain). The terrain is not flat. We were quite pleased. I regularly hit the same repeater from about the same distance in the Toyota too.
4. Unfortunately, if you have the hardtop the Larsen LP450NMO won’t work on the speaker bar. It does fit on the JLU, but won’t on my son’s JKU. Maybe the JKU soft top would clear, but just skip that and…..

The good news….. mount that sucker to the cowl panel under the windshield. It blends in well, works fantastic, and if you should ever decide to remove it, replacing that cowl panel is simple and relatively inexpensive.

Here’s photos of our install.

5. Some of the reasons I'm considering that CB you mentioned with the jumper for 10M.
Edit:
Whew! 667 posts. Nice to get off of that "666."

When the topic first came back up, I did some video watching on the YouTube and I found there are some interesting options. There are a handful of guys modding radios to do CB (10 & 11m) and doing a “peak & tune” with other options to make it perform better. The Stryker SR25 was the one I was considering, due to its very small footprint. After talking with (LesComm) “Lester’s Customs” he suggested the Anytone Apollo 2 with enhancements and MOSFET 5 & 6 finals. That would give you better power and stronger signal. Not cheap, but if I were to go down that road I’d want the power to get the job done. I was looking at that radio with a Larsen NMO antenna on a hood lip mount.
6. Here’s my ride & radio.

2022 4Runner & Icom 2730.

The antenna on left is a Larsen LP450NMO for GMRS, the one on right is for the Wilson WeBoost cell booster.

Most of the lights & electronics are run through the SwitchPros panel.

If anyone is a 4Runner fan and interested, here’s my build thread:

7. Ok I'm not sure what to think about him but he's facing back lashes for some of his postings. IMHO as far as it goes his attacks calling people sad hams is getting out of control.

Word is he has his back lashes waxed every Thursday.

Edit: show us on this doll where he inappropriately touched your feelings….

8. I'm not a fan of the Roger Beep but, I do like the MDC squawk.  As for the coolest MDC/PT-T ID signaling, I always thought that the old Saber analog MDC PT-T ID chirps were the best that LAPD use to use back in the day when they were on a 150 Meg system. When they went to the 500 Meg T-Band system they used the Astro Saber and PT-T ID with the digital MDC system.

I have no idea what any of that means.

It may as well say “The blue tree fish highway hiking right. Lemons toe rubber hand cow flight highway. I like pie”

9. YOUR radio, YOUR choice - if you hear something objectionable, perhaps you should exercise your right to use your radio, the way you wish, and change the channel.. Nothing gives you the right to inflict your opinion and violate someone ELSEs right to use their radio the way they wish.

Take a breath, just expressing my opinion. Step away from the candy dish.
10. That’s interesting and I wonder if that’s them responding to the USB-C charging desire that’s seen in a lot of the Amateur radio space for HT’s as well as the newer Wouxon offerings? I can sort of live with that because I can carry a battery bank as my “spare” which I already own.

Watching the video Randy posted and it sounds like you can only charge in the cradle, not direct to radio. Bummer.
