  1. So why do you come here?  I’ve noticed that a significant portion of your comments are actually about other people’s questions or comments and frequently negative, not actually contributing to the conversation.

If you don’t like my posts there is an ignore function you’re free to use.
  2. Looks like an alternative to the Midland MXT575 but the same limitations with a better screen.

I liked the Midland 575 just fine, but wanted the ability to enter frequencies & codes more directly. Another wish was user configurable channels, so I could store all my frequently used repeaters. A louder speaker, preferably on the mic, was my last want.

If I followed Randy’s video, it sounds like this new BTech is loud, so that’s good. The ability to enter frequencies & tones from an app, then do a back up of the date, is also a plus. It appears to have the channel capacity.

I don’t need another radio, but will likely try this new one.
  3. I just joined this "MyGMRS.com" a half hour ago. There are hundreds of thousands of both FRS, and GMRS radios, and licenses nationwide. There are only 30 members active here. I am looking at the dates of posts, and responses. Very OLD. I was under the impression, I was joining something that was growing, as more, and more people find this great communication system for friends, family, hunting, camping, and even emergency use where there is no cell coverage. I guess, I was wrong. Please let me know if im lost, or if this is what is actually here. I'm not impressed, especially since my computer had an attack from an advertiser. Where is this websites security protection. It just cost me $50.00 to unlock my computer from windows, because of this site.

No one is forcing you to be here, or to stay.
  4. Welcome.  Gmrs really is ment for friends and family/people you already know to use while doing an activity.    So do you know people that you do things with such as hike bike off road parks hunting ect…….. if using Gmrs correctly you will never be a voice in the dark.

Correctly? You can use it to talk to anyone who will listen & respond.
  5. The noise factor is an easy fix, high noise environment external speaker or a high noise with noise canceling boom mic headset.

The headset solution would also work with the HT, but cheaper, more portable, and no antenna or mounting issues. It’s what I’d do.
  6. I’d think the noise of the machine would make it difficult to use a mobile rig. What about using a handheld, which you could tuck in a shirt pocket or put over your shoulder like those firefighter radio carrier things? A handheld would allow you to use an earphone too, making it easier to hear.

  7. Not quite sure where that last comment came from.
I was trying to determine if I was on the right track or not, and hoping someone that had experience with a 5100 could help point me in the right direction. As I said, I'm new to this and tried to do my research before posting here. To determine if I was actually getting out, I was going to take the radio off the bench and go to a high point to be sure what I was actually hearing was in fact the repeater, and to see if I could get a response to confirm my settings. I live in a valley, so reception here is sketchy at best. Thanks for the help guys, and have a good one.

Did the software allow you to put tones in both rx/rx fields? Then you saved the file and pushed it back into the radio? If so, you may just need to keep trying until someone answers. You can double check and edit the tones in the radio menu. I can’t explain it here, but a review of the Icom manual online will guide you.

If that tone field is not able of be edited then RT should be able to help.

The comment was a half-assed attempt at social commentary about our current national nonsense. Wasn’t directed at you.
  8. So is the tariff levy on the wholesale or retail value? If it’s the wholesale value for sure then the price for just about all imported consumer goods might not go up nowhere near where the fear peddling media wants the public to believe.

I’m not too concerned as I believe the plan will work as intended.

That said, it’s never a bad time to buy new gear so I picked up a couple more Icom’s today; 2730 Black Edition and an ID-52 Plus.
  9. I'm looking for a HT that has scannable banks or groups if you will.  My AR-5rm allows me to select which channels I want to scan, usually programmed by CHIRP.  However, it's not convenient to change which ones to scan out in the "field".
I would like something that has multiple groups or banks that I can set to scan on the fly. Like, if I'm scanning all channels on bank 1, then decide to scan bank 2 instead, I could easily switch with a button push or two.
I'm sure something like that has to exist. I'm just not having much luck finding one in my searches.  Does anyone here have a recommendation?

I get what you’re trying to do and I wanted the same. I created a list of all the repeaters in my region, and those in the areas I travel frequently. I wanted to create groups to scan my home area, plus groups to scan other regional areas when visiting those areas.

It’s true there are only 22 channels, but I wanted different area repeaters with their respective tones, so I wouldn’t need to fuss with it and could dial in a channel (that I named) and go to town.

Now keep in mind, it’s technically not legal to use a Ham radio to transmit on GMRS frequencies, but I’m pretty sure you can listen with whatever you like. ;-)

I didn’t find a “legit” GMRS portable, but the Icom ID-50 can do the job nicely. It’s expensive, especially compared to the China made stuff, but it’s legit quality. It has 500 channel capacity and can be programmed easily into groups using RT Systems software.

I initially created two groupings, then expanded to three. You can have up to 100 in a group on the Icom. The software on device allows you to chose the group you wish to scan, or scan all groups. You also have dual watch / dual-scan options.

Having recently got my Technician Ham license, I’ve since updated groups.

If you understand the rules and chose to color outside the lines, you’d find the Icom products really really nice. I also like that it can charge in the car with USB-C.

Best of luck with your search.
  10. THAT... depends on where you are. In the area I live in, there are repeaters on every GMRS frequency, many overlap and even with tones to squelch others out, there is crossover interference at times. It would actually be nice to have a few more GMRS repeater pair frequencies in some places where there is a larger populated area.

Then maybe it’s time to use simplex and/or move to Ham for random conversations?
  11. I got really curious how many GMRS repeaters are owned or licensed by a single license on the reported repeaters here on MyGMRS.  So i put together a quick little (actually pretty large) report that shows just that.  The parameters are 3 repeaters and above and identified by single call sign as reported.  I really didn't expect to see some of the numbers some folks have in the number of repeaters. Holly Cow!.  Can you imagine the investment some of these folks have made.  So the next question,,  Why??  does a single user need so many repeaters for a service meant for family and friends.   Especially,  after considering how the FCC has clarified its usage.  I can see now why some folks in certain areas complain of no bandwidth. Certainly some areas in the mid west and east just have not room..      Just Trivia stuff and very interesting.

The bigger question is “why do you care?”

Did someone prevent you from putting up a repeater of your own?

With multiple channels and tones available, one can certainly own and operate a repeater if they desire.

I can see the Bernie bumper sticker on your Prius from way over here…..
