Andrei reacted to WRUU653 in Please help me understand how the UV-9GX scanning works
This little blurb from Bettersaferadio.com web page for the KG-UV9GX

I don’t think so, I have the uv9g pro and I don’t recall seeing it listed either.

You can scan all channels by going into the menu and changing the scan group to all.
and it can scan 2 separate groups at a time, one on top row, one on bottom row.
further, in the software, you can set custom scan groups to select from.

Andrei reacted to Borage257 in Has anybody ever compared the 15.3-Inch Nagoya NA-771G 15.3-Inch Whip antenna with the 28.3 Inch Length ABBREE SMA-Female Dual Band 144/430Mhz Foldable CS Tactical Antenna?
The 70cm is close enough to GMRS frequencies to get a good idea of performance. Many 70cm antennas can be used with out problem on GMRS.
The Nagoya 771g will likely be a good choice. Smiley antenna has a good 465MHz antenna line that is equivalent or better than the Nagoya.
I think the ABBREEs are more of a novelty/“Airsoft” antenna. They work, but I find signal stick, smiley and Nagoya to be better

I have tested with the SWR meter for the Nagoya and the Aubree 18" Inch.
The results are about the same. I just like the Aubree better because I can fold it up, and its more sturdy.
1.03 for the Nagoya and 1.02 for the Aubree
The performance is close enough that its a matter of preference at this point.
This is strictly on GMRS freqs.

The Nagoya 15.3-Inch NA-771G is widely considered one of the best antennas for GMRS HTs. Yet the 28.3 Inch Length ABBREE SMA-Female Dual Band 144/430Mhz Foldable CS Tactical Antenna is much larger.
Has anybody ever directly compared the two antennas?
Is the Nagoya always superior to that ABBREE or does the latter have an edge over the Nagoya in some circumstances and, if yes, which ones?
I only use HTs, by the way (mostly a Wouxun 935G), so I wonder if ever should ever use the ABBREE or is the Nagoya always the best choice?
Thank you!

As for another good option for car antenna is the Nagoya UT-72G. $35 and comes with the magnetic base.
I have one and it works really well. Also comes with a SMA adapter cable. But for
your situation using BNC is a better way to go as suggested above.

Have a look at this one. It has some gain as long as you have a nice roof on the car to provide a good ground plane. The gain will definitely be benifical with a low power radio like an HT.

The Midland MXTA26 has a good reputation and is on sale for ~$40 right now. It’s an NMO mount antenna, but you also need to buy a base and cable for it. Probably the most common base folks get for it is a magnetic mount. I got the MXTA12 from Midland for that. I think it’s about $30, but it was a Christmas gift, so I’m not certain.

Andrei reacted to MichaelLAX in Could you please look over my CHIRP settings to use repeaters
Yes, although I have no direct experience with the KG-935g; but it works better than my "ducky" antennas.
Whenever I put my Diamond 771 on any of my HTs (Ham or GMRS), I always get better coverage.
The Nagoya is better tuned to GMRS; as the Diamond is tuned to Ham 2 meters and 70 cms.

For me it worked very very well, I am super happy with this antenna (it seems much better than the one which the Btech GMRS Pro came with)

I believe this suggestion is incorrect and should be ignored by the OP.
Although I do not have the Wouxun KG-935g to test in CHIRP, my understanding is that Channels 20 - 22 for this radio are SIMPLEX channels and hence using them to gain access to any repeater will fail.
It looks to me that you have correctly programmed your radio for those three repeaters.
Take a Ride on the Reading Railroad; do NOT pass GO and do NOT collect $200, ? but as you get closer to these repeaters, you should be able to hear their "repeater tails" when you "kerchunk" your radio, by holding down the transmit button for about 2 seconds and then letting go.
When you hear the tail, you can then transmit, ID yourself and ask if anyone is hearing your signal.
It is possible, but unlikely, that they have one or more of these repeaters set to no tail, and you would then hear nothing when you kerchunk your radio.
PS: You should now delete the DeLand Repeater access Tone from your original post, so that you are not publishing here an unlisted, permission required Tone.

WRUU653 and KAF6045 - thanks so much for your replies and for educating me on CHIRP use!!
Happy new year and all the best for 2023

Andrei reacted to KAF6045 in Could you please look over my CHIRP settings to use repeaters
On many of these radios "TONE" mode means it only sends the tone, but does not check for that tone on receive. ToneSQL means it both sends and expects to receive the tone (why so many editors use separate columns for specifying the actual tone based on mode I will never understand).
Leaving the mode in TONE means you should hear all traffic on the frequency, so you can confirm the repeater is accessible. Later you can change to ToneSQL (and put the tone into the other column) to block out non-repeater traffic on the frequency (make sure to test before finalizing the configuration).
And has been mentioned, repeaters need a +5.0MHz offset.

Andrei reacted to KAF6045 in Can you explain the weird scanning behavior of my Wouxun KG-935G?
The only difference between a simplex channel and a repeater channel is that the repeater channel TRANSMITS on 467.xxxMHz rather than 462.xxxMHz-- both are receiving on 462.xxxMHz.
Stupid idiotization of radios: in the old days one didn't have separate simplex and repeater channels, one had ONE channel and a front-panel button that toggled simplex/duplex (and maybe a reverse button to temporarily let one hear the repeater input frequency -- you you could hear the other party you were close enough to use simplex).

Andrei got a reaction from WRUU653 in Can you explain the weird scanning behavior of my Wouxun KG-935G?
BINGO!!! You found the solution, thank you. As soon as I disabled the weather alert this behavior stopped.
Many many thanks!! ??
-
Andrei reacted to tweiss3 in Can you explain the weird scanning behavior of my Wouxun KG-935G?
Does the 935g do weather alerts? If so, when on it stops scanning every 10-15 seconds to check the weather channel for the alert tone, and it isn't actually stopping on the channel it shows.

Andrei reacted to MichaelLAX in Can you explain the weird scanning behavior of my Wouxun KG-935G?
I don't have the 935, but try turning up the squelch; if it is too low, it might be opening up for just noise.

Andrei reacted to MichaelLAX in Three questions about the Wouxun 935G
In CHIRP, just under Memories in the upper left hand corner, see if there is a Settings Mode and within that, an Advanced Settings and if, when clicked, there is an option to change the ID line from Wouxun KG-935G to WRVE426.
Otherwise you might have to use the Wouxun software for those types of settings.

Andrei reacted to KAF6045 in Three questions about the Wouxun 935G
I don't see any entry in the software where one may enter short text/call sign for display.
You may have to go into the Windows device manager, find the COM device being used by the radio, and manually change it to be COM1. At least for the Wouxun software, which seems to lock on COM1 and ghost any selection choices. CHIRP might be able to use whatever COM# the cable was assigned by Windows, but you will have to track that down.
