WRWH867 Posted July 20 Report Posted July 20 Finally getting around to joining up. Got my ham license just to prove they'll give those to any yahoo, but I'm currently only using my GMRS radios for SXS adventures, mostly in the TN area. WRWH867 / K8GRX LeeBo 1 Quote

Crazy Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 WSDX855 New license here. Just got a tid H3 ham/grms radio. Seems tho that the ham side has way more activity than gmrs. I do nothing all day but try to respond to someone that I hear, but figure they are on a repeater and can't hear me. No one is local so the radio in gmrs mode doesn't do much for me. Should have spent more time listening first. But, so far, definitely not impressed with the gmrs side of my radio as I can't talk to anybody in 5 states, (I travel). So I don't know what to do in gmrs. I'm not a business with 20 radios on site. I'm just a one man band looking to communicate with others. But find it really hard to do with gmrs. My radio scans all day and evening, (all 22 channels and all the repeaters) but nothing but a repeater noise or a good clear signal from someone over the ohio river in kentucky while I'm in lower indiana this month. When I get back to texas will try to see if anyone uses gmrs in the DFW metro area, as I work on my amateur license. I watch so many youtube channels, but none of them get into really programming a unit, purpose of having them, etc. There is good useful info, but nothing to get you on the air. My main issue is, when I put my radio in normal mode; amateur and gmrs, I have to figure out how to manually create channels with codes etc. In gmrs mode it programs the radio for all gmrs, weather and I think am/fm radio, but haven't figured out how to get those channels yet. Hoping to one day find a book that is easy to read to help with that. In the meantime, I'll just keep calling out CQ WSDX855, looking to talk with another. If you hear me (lower indiana, lower illinois, across the mountains of arkansas (little rock sucks to drive thru, the mountain routes are sooo much nicer, and the views!!!) across the middle and southeast part of Oklahoma and into north Texas, holler back..... SteveShannon Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 Crazy Eagle, if you don’t have the repeater input codes set correctly people listening on repeaters won’t hear you. Take a look at Notarubicon videos. They’re the most complete videos that explain GMRS. Calling CQ isn’t really a thing on GMRS. Welcome to the forum! WRUU653, WRXB215, RayDiddio and 1 other 4 Quote
Socalgmrs Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 Sooo 1. gmrs really is a bring your own friends. Not really ment for finding strangers to talk to on the radio. But if you use this site and others to find local repeaters and get them programmed in with tones and off set you MAY make new radio friends. 2. Ham is for that reason and many bands travel many many more miles then the gmrs bands. 3. Dfw has many gmrs users. 4. the best/easiest way to program a radio, ham or gmrs, is with software and a laptop/computer and a programming cable. Quote
