Apparently people rat themselves out via social media pretty frequently. You'd think they'd know better after a few of them got busted, but they keep doing it.

Yes, a cell tower can still ping a phone even when it's in airplane mode. Airplane mode primarily disables cellular radio for calls, texts, and data, but it doesn't stop the phone from periodically checking in with nearby networks. This "pinging" can still allow for tracking or monitoring.

Yes this is correct, the continuous pinging was put into effect back in mid 90's early 2000's for the purpose of 911 being able to get your location if you were calling for help.  The only way to stop it is to take your battery out. even powering it off will still send an LNL(last known location) ping just before its fully off.

If you use FB on your phone its tracking you as well, Google maps keep track of your locations as well.

So, if I turn my phone off at my home, it won't be detectable again until I turn it back on?

Not that I'm planning to participate in any crimes, but it seems the best solution is just to leave it at home. If they did that, FRS radios could certainly be handy for coordination.

Not all faraday bags are created equal. Better double up on them if using cheap bags from Amazon or eBay. Or stick them in a faraday bag and then into an all metal container.

i would defiantly go with a military grade faraday bag.  Ebay & Amazon would be the last place i would go to buy one,,

 i have some from Nest that claims to be military grade.  Big enough to hold a HT with antenna.   These are more designed for EMT protection with i would think would work against cell phone detection.

I have a metal box with overlap and metal taped edges that my vehicle still detects the fob thru.  The chip signal amplifiers are pretty strong.  For improved security I took the battery out of the fob and now the chip has to be within a half inch of the start button.

The higher the frequency the shorter the wavelength and the smaller the opening that can penetrate.

Probably why an EMP bag will let high frequencies through at strong signal levels.  The bags are designed for a dc generated pulse.

Microwave ovens are faraday cages. You can always put your phone into a faraday bag and then into a microwave. I don't suggest turning the microwave on while the phone or bag are inside. 

Faraday clothe, just like any other type of clothe, will have holes in the weave which will let some RF pass through. Ideally one would want to use the tightest weave faraday clothe and place that inside a metal container.

Ideally one would remove the battery also. But most modern smart phones do not have removable batteries without having to disassemble the phone.
