They were using DTMF tones I will gather as an ID for the radios.  If they are running a little business on the channel maybe they are also using some other data on the channel also.

Those are not violations though.

I understand they are not violations.  If I recall correctly he heard digital burst and stuff on this frequency.  I was just pointing out that they are using it for a sounds like a trucking company.  Maybe they have a data system transmitting on the frequency also and that is what he is hearing.

On the BF-F8HP Pro radios I have you can TX GPS Coordinate one radio to another as long as you're on the same channel. That would be a digital tone burst.

That kind of data is specifically permitted in GMRS, with mostly minor limitations.

Another downside is that the GPS functions are not compatible between brands. Baofeng radios only share GPS info with other Baofeng radios and Wouxun radios only share GPS data with other Wouxun radios.

Those are the only two brands I have tested so far.

I’m pretty sure Garmin only shares with Garmin also.

It's really not an issue when you pipe the audio into Google Translator as one brand transmits Mandarin and the other Cantonese.

Seems like a GPS digital tone burst would be the same across manufactures but such is not the case. Too bad they couldn't standerize it.

I would expect them to purposely make sure they weren't capable of cross talk.  Otherwise you might buy the other radio for price or features over theirs.  I'm sure they actively chose another standard to make sure they couldn't communicate with each other.

I just found this link on another forum. https://apps.fcc.gov/els/GetAtt.html?id=336289&x=

It looks like the one experimental license renewal to run DMR on GMRS has been denied by the FCC.

Quote

DISMISSED-WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Dear Gregory Forrest,

This refers to application, File No. 1487-EX-CN-2023, for an experimental authorization.

You are advised that the Commission is unable to grant your application for the facilities requested.

Wireless Bureau objects since they find that operation of incompatible technologies on GMRS

frequencies undermines the listen before talk etiquette and could lead to interference with other GMRS

licenses on these shared frequencies. The use of digital voice modulation techniques using DMR are not

permitted under the rules in Part 95, and the Commission, in 2017, considered and declined to permit

such emissions in the GMRS.
