Newbie Question About Repeater Maps

Gents,

New guy here with a question about repeater maps.  I see how the mygmrs site provides repeater information and I can query this data using the filters provided.  There is also a map function with some repeaters indicated on it.  Is there a way to search repeaters and have those repeaters displayed on a map?

You also need to remember the coverage area shown in those maps is theoretical in they assume certain parameters that may be incorrect. The coverage for a radio signal depends on three things, location, height and radiated power. Location can best be described as where the antenna is physically located and the terrain surrounding the antenna. The second factor, height is how far above the ground at that physical location is the radiating portion of the antenna. Power takes into effect the type of emission, bandwidth the signal occupies and the amount of radiated signal. All the coverage areas shown on myGMRS are circular ignoring the actual terrain at and near the repeater. It is unknown what antenna height is used and the radiated power.

I know if I were to put up a site at my location the coverage would be shown as a circle but in all actuality it would be a wedge toward the WSW due to hills higher than my antenna surrounding my location.

Just for the record, I have observed on multiple occasions that location of the repeater is grossly wrong, wrong as in the database says the repeater is in one city (where I know for certain it is) but when shown on the MyGMRS map it appears in a different city 75+ miles away. Also, a more accurate location of the repeater would need to exist too for the map to be beneficial. In addition to the errors reference above, I have observed that the location of the repeater may appear to be at or near the home of the repeater’s owner when in reality the repeater is many, many miles away in a much better physical location.

I agree a view like that would be nice if it could be trusted to provide useful information.

I just joined this forum today in hopes of finding repeaters near me. I was surprised that there were none. The closest thing to me is a blue spot with the #2 in it, but I have no idea what that means. Clicking on it doesn't do anything. What is that?

I do have 3 repeaters within 20-45 miles, but aren't they too far for a handheld? I'm also new to HAM aad GMRS. I have a Wouxun KG-UV9P and waiting on my KG-805G, so as of now, I haven't made any contact with anyone (hoping to take my Tech class test next week)

Welcome to the forum.  Not knowing your area, I'm 20-30 miles away from repeater in WNC mountains and reach it with my KG-805G and use Authentic Nagoya NA-771G Handheld GMRS Antenna (15.3 Inch / SMA Female)  https://www.buytwowa...ya-na-771g.html which is in stock and just ordered another and awaiting delivery.

Sorry, Im in Pittsburgh PA at an elevation of about 1250'. One of the highest areas of the city, so that may be an advantage. It looks like I may be about 22-23 miles from nearest repeater. I just ordered the antenna from Buytwowayradios.com and also asked about my 805G. It would normally be here tomorrow, but USPS tracking updated since it shipped.

I know Pittsburgh as worked/trained there by my manager some 50 years ago and he hated it and called it the arm pit of Penn.  It was nice, to much snow for me as not one shoved and news covered stories of people death from heart attacks.

Great on you selection "805G and antenna"...if you need any help with your 805G let me know and will give you this ex-newbie knowledge from my mistakes that I learned from.

So did you contact the owner of the repeater for permission to go on his repeater so you can put in the PL code(s) (I will help you as BTWR was closed over Christmas so had to learn on my own.) and if he assign ID # like on my repeater owner here in WNC which is 855 to 857 for the family.  In my contact with my local repeater owner, I thanked him for use, told him about myself and vision casting my 12 yo G daughter going to join Space Force.  He very friendly and helpful as he has other repeaters and access to several repeater which my same ID can be used all of them.  I even sent him $500 donation as that is cheaper then putting up my own repeater.  His repeater is on one of the highest mountains and cover two large mountain counties.  G daughter and I drove up to the tower one cold day several weeks ago to check it out and offered to help him with sweat if he needs it.  G daughter and I go on air daily so she no get to shy.  She talks to me but will get there.

Now they make a shorter antenna but I found the longer one goes to the windshield based on my mounting 805G.  I also purchase the mic/speaker since my 805G is mounted in Jeep passenger side for G daughter to operate.

I do not know what is it with SC PO as I'm still waiting for my second antenna and it shows it at SC PO but I guess they do not scan package if they leave.  On some of the orders I track, package just showed up...  PO not scanning anymore?

Have fun.

Jack

The dot with a number in it means there are that many repeaters fairly close to each other in that area.  If you zoom in on the map, they will separate to their locations and you can then click them to view the info.
